Thank you for supporting my film. I have hit my goal of raising at least $5,000. With that I can pay for licensing archival video footage and photographs from the 1970's. Thus far this film has been funded by myself. The story is told by the IPS surf directors and founding members of the Hui O He'e Nalu. If people are so kind pledge more and surpass my goal of $5,000, then I can hire a musician for film score music and a graphic artist. Thanks again for any support you can give.

What is "The Black Shorts" documentary film about?

In 1976, a group of surfers in Hawaii came together because of the hordes of foreign surfers and tourists descending on the tranquil North Shore of Oahu Hawaii.

These North Shore surfers saw this invasion as a new wave of colonialism attacking their culture. Also in 1976, the International Professional Surfing (IPS) which was headquartered on the North Shore of Oahu Hawaii, inaugurated the first surfing world tour circuit, which brought surfing to a new level of popularity and made the North Shore of Oahu the surf Meca of the world.

The IPS surfing contests were televised on three national television networks (ABC, CBS and NBC). Many people saw Hawaii for the first time and soon began to flock to the North Shore to experience this paradise.

Soon local Hawaiian surfers found their beaches and waves overcrowded, felt disrespected and were excluded from surfing where surf contests were being held for the first time. These surfers formed a surf club, the "Hui O He’e Nalu" in order to preserve their culture, land and ocean. They felt that if they did not stand up to incoming commercialism, the North Shore would become another overcrowded city like Waikiki.

The Hui O He’e Nalu protested the IPS and disrupted their surf contests to the point where surf contests would not be able to continue on the North Shore. Since that time the Hui O He’e Nalu has been internationally branded as thugs and as a gang by the media and the IPS. They are well known as a surf club not to cross. Today the North Shore remains a surf paradise and has not become over commercialized due in part to the Hui O He’e Nalu’s continuing efforts as a surf club and their constant presence on the North Shore of Oahu and throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

Why am I making it this film?

While working towards a Master of Fine Arts in Digital Cinema and my thesis project, I chose to produce a documentary film. I wanted to tell a unique compelling story and one that hasn’t been told before. After graduation and two years of producing this documentary, my film is in the final stages of post-production before it is released in film festivals worldwide. I want to tell the story of “The Black Shorts” (the Hui O He’e Nalu) because rumors about the surf club discredit who they are and what their mission is today. I am surprised that the general public has a negative view about the Hui O He'e Nalu surf club and what the black shorts stand for. Tourists view them as a dangerous urban legend of Hawaii.

It is time to show people how the Hui O He’e Nalu helps Hawaii as a whole. Without this group, the North Shore of Oahu would not be what it is today. With no other films around that tell the true story of the Hui O He’e Nalu. I believe this story will attract a large worldwide audience and further benefit the Hawaiian people and culture for future generations. This films genre speaks about culturalism, environmentalism and surf history.

How can I help produce the film?

Risks and challenges

This project took a lot of research for both the story and for archival material such as photos and video from the 1970's. Paying for licensing these materials is the greatest challenge I face. I want to show the best archival photos and videos in my film so it matches the time period I am portraying. If I do not raise this remaining money, then my project gets put on hold.
