Kelly Gee has been smoking meat, low and slow, since the age of 8. He was raised in Blytheville, Arkansas which everyone agrees is the Barbecue Mecca of the South. He has expanded on his heritage by hosting Pig Roasts, BBQs featuring his wonderful pulled pork shoulder and baby back ribs and smoking turkeys for family and friends for Thanksgiving. But, for all these years, Kelly has used a small and increasingly-decrepit Brinkmann smoker that can only cook two shoulders or three racks of ribs. The small size and uneven heating has prevented him from being able to realize his dream of entering a BBQ competition. But, even with inferior equipment, he has produced wonders like this:

It's long past time to upgrade and we, his family and friends, hope that crowdfunding will make it a reality. If this project is funded, Kelly will be able to purchase a proper smoker and finally enter his first BBQ competition: the Smoke on the Water Ribba Ramma pork rib BBQ competition on September 13-14 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. And, he plans to warm up for this competition by hauling the new smoker to the first Razorback game at War Memorial Stadium on September 7th for the best tailgate party around.

The equipment he has his eye on is the Boco Roto Smoker, forged and handmade in Greenbrier, Arkansas. The Boco Roto is solid steel construction, with removable shelves rotating through the smoke chamber. This is a real-deal, no fooling-around smoker.  The larger size of this smoker will allow him to produce enough meat that he can meet minimum requirements for BBQ competitions and its innovative design gives him enough control over his product that he can win! And he won't stop there. After Smoke on the Water, he plans to continue to perfect his skills by entering BBQ competitions around the state and to participate in the Little Rock tailgates as long as they'll let him.

Risks and challenges

If the project is successfully funded, Kelly's biggest challenge will be entering a BBQ competition for the very first time using a brand new smoker. Kelly will overcome this challenge by drawing on his many years of experience in making adjustments for timing and temperature while smoking the meat. We've also timed the deadline for project completion so that he will be able to do a full scale dress rehearsal with the Boco Roto at the September 7th Razorback tailgate. That only gives us 14 days to fully fund this though, so please help get him ready to compete!
