About

Traditional Beer Stein / Pint Glass / Pintstein

Beer steins are heavy, hard to clean, difficult to store and not built for comfort. If you go out to a bar, you can't take your beer stein with you.  Because of this, most beer steins end up as decorations.

The 16oz. pint glass is the most common glassware for beer. They are easy to stack and don't take up much space.  They and are used at most bars, breweries and restaurants.  But the pint glass on it's own leaves a lot to be desired.

The Pintstein adds a comfortable handle and lid to a standard 16oz. pint glass.  Pintsteins fold up for easy storage or to use at your favorite bar, brewery or restaurant.

You can't use a beer stein in a bar.

Bars usually have a rule that you cannot bring in outside glassware. The Pintstein works because you can order a drink that comes in their pint glass. Take their pint glass and put it into your Pintstein.

It folds!

Made in the USA!

We are making the Pintstein here in the United States.  One of the biggest benefits, for a project like this, is time. Having the parts made here is faster because we can avoid slow cargo ships and going through customs. Avoiding these steps could save weeks or even months, helping us get the Pintstein out to you as soon as possible.

Material

  • The Pintstein will be made with a 13% glass filled nylon. This will give the Pintstein a good balance of strength and stiffness. It is also a very light weight material. An added benefit is a high resistance to heat.  Anyone who sets their Pintstein down a little too close to the campfire, will only end up with a warm beer.
  • The rubber used is a softer silicone rubber. This gives it the right balance of grip to hold on to the pint glass. While also allowing you to slowly twist the glass out of the Pintstein. Because the lid comes in contact with the edge of the pint glass and the beer inside the glass, it is important that the lid be made with a material such as silicone rubber, that is suitable for food contact.
  • The parts are connected by a stainless steel bolt, that is secured with a lock nut.
  • The adhesive used to bind the rubber to the nylon is Food Contact Safe (FDA grade) 350F high temp, High Strength Silicone Sealant.

Parts made so far

We have already gotten two of the molds made and have quotes ready to go for the rest.  With your help, we can finish the molds and put in our first order.

On the right is an image of the professionally made ring and silicone rubber, on top of the 3D printed prototype.

Weight

The Pintstein is about half the weight of an empty pint glass.

Design Features

Field Testing

We have had a lot fun testing the Pintstein in a variety of bars, breweries and restaurants.

Beta Testing

We have shared some of the prototypes with those willing to test it out.  They have had some great feedback and even posted some of their photos to our Facebook page. Please take a look to see what they think.

Timeline

The funds raised through Kickstarter will allow us to make the molds and place an order for the initial production run.

Stretch Goals

Colors!    After we cover the cost of the initial run, it would be great to expand the color options.  The trade off with having the added strength of glass filled nylon is that the color options are more limited.

Glow in the Dark  - So you never loose your beer in the dark.  The glow in the dark Pintstein would also glow in a bar with UV black lights.

About Us

My name is William Hess and I created the Pintstein. I have always been a big beer enthusiast and have spent a lot of time with a pint glass in hand.  The idea for the Pintstein started off as a simple way of keeping bugs out of our beer.   Over the last year we've refined the design and made a lot of improvements.  I have really enjoyed taking an idea from concept to prototype and look forward to moving it to production.

Risks and challenges

We've tried to lay the groundwork for a smooth roll out, with as little risk as possible. At the same time we realize that there is always a chance of unforeseen delays. If such a situation develops, we will do our best to work through it while keeping our backers informed.

Assembling the Pintstein is the step that will take the most time. If the Kickstarter goes beyond the funding goal, we will have to scale up and bring on more people to get the Pintsteins out on a reasonable schedule.
If the campaign is widely successful, then we will have to look at methods of injection molding that would remove the need for gluing the rubber and nylon together. The reason we are not starting with overmolding, or a two shot mold is that they are much more expensive. Moving up to a two-shot injection mold would require some design changes and tooling time. Some of this time would be made up by eliminating the need to assemble parts together.
If this becomes necessary we will keep everyone informed as to what changes to product and schedule need to be made.
