Sensuous 64: A Sexy Sci-Fi Podcast (Canceled)
A podcast radio drama about an intergalactic sex advice show on a day that things go terribly awry.
Imagine if the Savage Lovecast and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy had a podcast baby.
Xandra is the host of Sensuous 64, your best source for sex advice and the news of the day from Pleasure Sphere 64.
What's a Pleasure Sphere?
It's a cruise ship by way of a Red Light district, if it was housed in the Death Star. 117 luxurious decks of intergalactic restaurants, bars, beaches, hotels, a gladiator arena, and of course, Madam Xandra's own House of Xcitement, where there's something to satisfy the appetites of patrons from all corners of the galaxy.
Yeah, I want to go to there too.
So what exactly am I paying for?
This will be a regularly recurring radio drama with approximately 20-minute episodes. The money we raise here will go to paying voice actors, recording costs, hosting the podcast online and, if we exceed our goal significantly, to hosting a live Sensuous 64 event where you can meet Madam Xandra in the flesh! The sexy, sexy flesh.
The plan is currently to produce one season of Sensuous 64 and, if it's successful, to produce additional seasons as well.
Who is involved?
The writer and producer of this podcast project is Amy Thorstenson. (That's me!) I'm a recent MFA grad from Northwestern, I've successfully produced a bunch of short films and a feature, but my imagination has always outstretched my production budget. With a radio drama, I can bring any and all of my wacky sci-fi ideas to life using only the power of worrrrrrrrds! (And extremely talented voice actors.)
Okay, who else?
So far, Ryan Schremp and Veronica Smash are on board as voice actors and the incomparable SparkleFuck has agreed to write Xandra's theme song. More voice actors will be needed as intergalactic vacationers at PS64 calling in with tricky alien sex questions, as well as some foley artists to create sound effects.
Why a podcast now?
Podcasts have risen in popularity as they've become increasingly easy to produce. Most of these are nonfiction, but there are exceptions, like the incredible Welcome To Nightvale, which in 2013 was the most downloaded podcast on iTunes.
The people have spoken, and the people are nerds who want radio dramas. This makes me so happy.
Why sexnerds now?
As sex positivity and open-mindedness has become more mainstream, so has the label "nerd." We're the future!
Here's an excerpt from Vice's recent article about sex nerds:
"Why look to conventional pornography or Hollywood for the future of sex? Sex nerds know more about sex not only because they're talking about it and passionate about it but because forging their own paths is what nerds have always been doing."
So let's keep forging those paths. Those sexy-nerdy retro-future paths of awesome.
Risks and challenges
The script is already written for the pilot and several subsequent episodes, and the actors and recording studio are already on board. The main obstacle will be coordinating recording efforts between Madison WI (where my voice actors are located) and Los Angeles (where I'm located), but I have the utmost faith in our ability to get this podcast done, and done right.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
