About

We're planning a festival!

Taking place in Cleveland, Ohio on June 4-7, 2020, the third annual Re:Sound New and Experimental Music Festival will provide a platform for the music of adventurous creators and performing artists of diverse backgrounds. Over the past two years, the festival has become an integral part of our city’s fabric, striving to highlight Cleveland’s strengths, address its needs, and facilitate meaningful connections between artists and audiences.

Sound Energy performs at Re:Sound 2019

Re:Sound is run by Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting new and experimental music in Northeast Ohio. In addition to Re:Sound, CUSP also runs a year-round concert series and CoLab, an education initiative focused on cultivating the talents of local young composers who are nonbinary, gender nonconforming, or women. You can read more about the small but mighty team behind CUSP here.

Leo Suarez performs at Re:Sound 2019

This is an artist-centered festival. Good music comes from happy musicians. As performers ourselves, we know how it feels to be taken care of. We book venues based on how they will showcase the artists we select. We are personally there every step of the way in soundchecks, and provide homestays for musicians coming from out of town.

We select performers through a call-for-performances that closed on October 1. Artists were asked to propose a set of 20-30 minutes of music that is either improvised or composed after 2000. This year, we had more applicants than ever before--almost 120! We will be making selections in late November, and booking venues soon after that. Past venues have included the Bop Stop (a jazz club), Praxis Fiber Arts Gallery, The Magalen (a DIY space in a century-old storefront), CODA Live Music Venue, and SPACES Gallery.

Elizabeth A. Baker performs at Re:Sound 2018

We are dedicated to building a community with Re:Sound, creating connections between artists from near and far and local audiences. The schedule includes plenty of group hangs throughout the weekend, and each concert presents at least two acts so that artists get to know each others' work.

We also strive to make this festival open to as many audience members as possible. All of the venues at Re:Sound 2020 will be handicap accessible. And while we do charge admission, our prices have remained modest and consistent over the past two years. We charge $12 per concert and sell festival passes for $35. Discounts for students and seniors are available, at $8 for a ticket or $25 for a festival pass. No one is turned away for lack of funds.

Festival Timeline

We’ve already been hard at work organizing this year’s festival. Here’s what’s happened so far, and what’s coming up for us:

  •  Aug 15-Oct 1: Our call-for-performers was open to artists.
  •  Early Dec: The Re:Sound Committee meets and selects the  performers for the festival. Trust us, this is is SUPER HARD. There are always many more worthy ensembles than there are slots.
  •  Dec-Jan: We book venues and secure performer agreements.
  •  Feb: We announce the lineup and schedule.
  •  Feb-June: Preparations! Planning our advertising strategy, shoring up our budget, and fulfilling your Kickstarter rewards are among our activities in this busy time.
  •  June 4-7: The festival!

We need your help!

This year, we're hoping to grow in some pretty exciting ways. We'll be investing in things like increased performer payments, more advertising to grow our audience, and bigger venues to accommodate larger crowds.

Our total budget for the festival is just under $16,000, most of which goes to covering performer fees. We've already raised most of these funds through grants, individual donations, and ticket sales. About $1,000 of our Kickstarter goal of $6,000 will go towards fulfilling rewards and platform/credit card fees. Also, a note which may be important for some: while CUSP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and donations are tax-deductible, these Kickstarter donations will not be, due to the rewards we offer as a part of this campaign. For more information, please contact us.

Through Re:Sound, we're showcasing everything our city has to offer: enthusiastic fans, compelling spaces, and artists at the top of their craft who are passionate about sharing their work. We need you to help us reach new audiences and produce a weekend that is even bigger and better than any we've put on before. The musicians deserve it. The audiences deserve it. And Cleveland deserves it.

So join us!

Risks and challenges

There is a chance that renting larger venues and spending more in advertisements will not result in larger audiences. But we have so far been incredibly lucky so far in building a supportive community for new music in Cleveland, and our audience has steadily grown over the past two years. We feel confident in taking this risk. We also deeply appreciate the trust you are putting in us by donating to this campaign.

Concerts may not run like clockwork, or a freak Cleveland snowstorm in June could keep audiences away. But isn't navigating that tightrope walk the fun of live performance?
