About

A Temple Garden for the Honeybees

We are creating a 90' diameter sacred geometry Temple Garden at Artemis Smiles Honeybee Sanctuary on the Big Island of Hawaii and need your support to see this project to completion.

What is Artemis Smiles Honeybee Sanctuary?

The Sanctuary has been a labor of love, solely funded by honey sales and honeybee education. Since the inception of Artemis Smiles in 2001, dozens of unpaid volunteers have offered their time and creative energy, and in the process have learned the art of spirit-centered beekeeping.  The Sanctuary is dedicated to restoring a mutually beneficial, loving and respectful relationship between humans and honeybees.  Through outreach to the community, visits to schools, beekeeping workshops and tours, we help people understand the importance of honeybees.  We also encourage the renaissance of small scale and hobby beekeeping, which is essential to a diversified and sustainable food supply.

Our Island is home to the largest commercial Queen breeding company in the world, supplying hundreds of thousands of mass-produced Queen bees to replace dead mainland colonies every year.  While this factory production style may be essential for food pollination in agribusiness, we are concerned about the loss of genetic diversity, a genetic bottleneck that has made bees much more susceptible to disease and parasites.  For the past ten years we have nurtured a 'seed bank' of wild honeybees that are genetically diverse and allowed to reproduce naturally by swarming.  The honeybees of the Big Island, like those elsewhere around the world have been hit hard by a number of parasites/disease in the last few years, and our once abundant healthy colonies are now struggling to survive. While the Sanctuary has lost a significant percentage of its colonies, our 'survivor' Queens are going strong  without the use of miticides, re-queening (killing older, less 'productive' queens), antibiotics, artificial feeds, and other manipulations and interventions commonly used by commercial beekeepers. It is heartbreaking to see some of our beloved colonies die, yet our deep respect for the inherent wisdom of the bees- which has enabled them to survive more than 40 million years on the planet- has given us hope.

What is The Temple Garden?

Based on the ancient Flower of Life symbol, the Temple Garden will be home to 12 of our hives, placed in a specific geometric pattern.  In designing this garden, we draw from more than ten years of experience and a deep understanding of the bees biology and natural history.  It has become clear to us that the bees are interacting with energy fields and frequencies far beyond what humans can perceive.  (The famed nuclear physicist Barbara Shipman has shown that the bees are interacting with the quantum field, that is, the pre-manifest level of reality).  The Flower of Life pattern generates an energy field that resonates with the harmonics of the cosmos and reflects the Sacred Geometry already inherent in their natural form and life processes.  Our project brings us full circle, back to a time when bees were revered as teachers of Divine Architecture. Within the protective energy field generated by the Temple Garden the bees will have access to their Original Blueprint and Source energy. In turn, our human relationship with honeybees will deepen, as will our direct connection to the Divinity within ourselves and within all life.

The Temple Garden is located on a section of rough a'a lava within our eight acre Sanctuary. It will include a circular lava stone-wall perimeter and four twelve foot temple gates.  The outer 15' of the garden will be planted with species that are rich in pollen, nectar and/or have medicinal qualities for the bees (ie, mints, lavender,  kukui, citrus and pomegranate). The inner 60' area and altars will be constructed of a stucco-like material (all natural, which includes specific types of sand, clay, cow-dung and resins which have special energetic properties).  Due to its remote location, the transport of these materials will require trucks to traverse almost a mile of rough pasture riddled with wallows dug by the neighboring ranch's herd of 2500 pound bulls!

What We Need:

Tools: Among the tools we will need are large machinery (and skilled operators) to grade and level the site, truck rentals and wheelbarrows to move materials, as well as gloves, machetes, picks, shovels, generators and concrete mixers to make the 'stucco'.

Resources:  As with any project, there is a lot labor needed to get the job done. Out of our desire to work harmoniously with the land, most of the work will be done by hand, which will require a large labor force.  Some skilled workers will be hired from our local community, others will be volunteers giving their time and energy to help the bees. Regardless, we want them all well fed and housed.

Materials: Some of the materials we will require are water (water must be hauled in to the site), the plants and seeds, the 'stucco' materials, mosaic materials, crystals, Temple gate and Temple hive materials.

Temple Hives:  Our Temple hives are uniquely designed to enhance and protect the energy field in which the consciousness of the bees as a 'super-organism' resides.  We need the wood, stands and canvas as well as the funds to pay for the cutting and construction to bring these Hives to life.

What you can do to help the bees:

We are SOOO grateful for your financial support!  We want you to be aware that there are many ways you can help the honeybees who have given so much to sustain human life.

Buy your honey local and raw from organic beekeepers who practice humane and natural beekeeping. This type of honey is the most healing and nutritious for your body and does not contain the pesticides, antibiotics, corn-syrup and other contaminants commonly found in commercial varieties.

Become a 'backyard beekeeper' yourself.  There is a huge movement and many organizations that can help you get started.  If you can't make it to Hawaii to study with us, check out www.BeeGuardian.org

Make your yard a sanctuary for bees and other pollinators!  Avoid the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.  Limit the amount of grass lawns in favor of pollen and nectar producing plants. Many 'weeds' such as dandelions provide an important food source for the bees in spring and fall... consider letting them bloom!

The Bees tell us the most important thing we can do for them is to LOVE them, and you don't have to be a beekeeper to do that!  Every loving or grateful thought becomes a prayer on the pre-manifest plane, and helps to lighten the burden of disregard and exploitation the bees experience in their current relationship with human-kind. Together let's envision a world that is healthy, peaceful and harmonious for all bee-ings!

* About Our Honey Rewards *

The Sanctuary honey is a very special gift from the bees, and the amount available is determined by environmental conditions such as rainfall or drought as well as the health of the bees.  We only harvest excess honey, making sure the bees have enough for their own needs first.  We have based our number of rewards that include honey on our best estimate of the amount that will be available.  Although we will be sure you receive your honey, it may not be delivered at the same time as your other gifts, we appreciate your sensitivity to the bee's timing!
