nWoD Dark Eras Prestige Edition was only available during this Kickstarter, but PDF and physical book PoD editions will be available on DTRPG.com.
Backer Surveys for addresses, Backer Credit names, and Add-on lists will be sent out after a few months, and other Reward Tier based reward contacts will happen ASAP.
nWoD Dark Eras starts out presenting a chapter for each of nine historical eras; one for each of the New World of Darkness game lines. The sections are written for the currently available edition of the game line, but they are designed to be usable with any edition. Each terrifying time period and location is examined through the supernatural creatures that dwell there:
Vampire: the Requiem — Requiem for Regina (1587-1593): Elizabeth Tudor wears the Crown Imperial and redefines the nature of power in Europe. In a London both grimy and vibrant, vampires wage their secret wars. Some set their sights on a new Empire of the Damned, while their cults are riven by religious schisms. All the while, they watch over their shoulders as the Elizabethan police state emerges. And then there is the matter of who will kill Christopher Marlowe. Anna K Loy, Renee Ritchie writers & Rose Bailey, Audrey Whitman developers.
Werewolf: the Forsaken — The Bowery Dogs (1969-1979): New York City in the 1970s. Crime. Drugs. Gang violence. Vast economic disparity. And Werewolves. It's a lean, ugly time to be alive, and the lone wolf doesn't stand a chance out there. In the end, all you really have is family. David A Hill, Jr writer & Travis Stout developer.
Mage: the Awakening — To the Strongest (330-320 BCE): In the rise and fall of Alexander the Great's Empire, armies march and cultures clash. In the birth pangs of Hellenistic civilization, Mages all over the ancient world meet, fight, and join together. In the chaos of Alexander's assassination and the wars that follow, Cults become Mage Orders amid conflicts still burning in the present day. Malcolm Sheppard, Danielle Lauzon writers & Dave Brookshaw developer.
Promethean: the Created — Handful of Dust (1933-1940): The Great Depression and the black blizzards of the 1930s turn the American Midwest into a wasteland. For the better part of a decade, thousands of people experience deprivation and alienation right alongside the Created. Like mortals, the Prometheans also cling to the faint promise of hope, that the rains will come and restore the land. Mark L. S. Stone writer & Matt McFarland developer.
Changeling: the Lost — Lily, Sabre and Thorn (1600s-early 1700s): In the Age of Reason under the reign of Louis XIV, enlightenment goes hand-in-hand with court intrigues. The Sun King's court influences a time when Changeling freeholds gain increasing unity and communication. It is a time of adventure, deception, betrayal and passion — the roar of cannon, the rustle of silk, the ring of steel. The joys and sorrows and outrageous fortunes of the swashbuckler — these are all too well-known to the Lost. J. Dymphna Coy writer & Ethan Skemp developer.
Hunter: the Vigil — Doubting Souls (1690-1695): Immigrants and tribes struggle to co-exist on the eastern seaboard in the ever-expanding North American Colonies. Violent clashes, supernatural beliefs, and demonic influences spell disaster for Salem Village and its surrounding towns, while other Hunters fight werewolves and vampires on the frontier. With so much at risk, only god-fearing men and women are deemed innocent — and those are few indeed. Monica Valentinelli writer & Matt McElroy developer.
Geist: the Sin-Eaters — God's Own Country (1950s): World War II is over and a new age of technology is coming, but a hidden storm threatens to overwhelm both the Māori and the European New Zealanders, flooding the world with the restless dead. Sin-Eaters are the last line of defense between a spirit-world gone mad and a sleepy island nation concerned with mourning their lost soldiers. Cam Banks writer & Michelle Lyons-McFarland developer.
Mummy: the Curse — The Ruins of Empire (1893–1924): During this quintessential era of the Mummy in the mind of Westerners, the Arisen maneuver through the intrigues of two great, falling empires: the British and the Ottoman. As mortals catch glimpses of their glorious past, Mummies hurtle towards the Great War, a conflict on a scale unseen in recorded history. Jess Heinig writer & C. A. Suleiman developer.
Demon: the Descent — Into the Cold (1961): East Germany erects a wall against its Western counterpart, turning West Berlin into an island within its own country. As the Cold War heats up, Demons find themselves the targets of increasing human scrutiny and begin to realize that the God-Machine's plans didn't end with the War. Eric Zawadzki writer & Rose Bailey developer.
But don't take our word for it! Please check out the unedited book text yourself, and let us know what you think:
Here is an interview for your enjoyment and edification with RichT, Rose, and Matt McFarland about how the ideas for Dark Eras all came together:
This Prestige Edition nWoD Dark Eras Kickstarter is designed to enable us to create a prestige hardcover edition with a full-color, 300+ page interior encapsulating the nine chapters mentioned above. A silk bookmark and stunning artwork are all part of this prestige package. Unique to this Prestige Edition, the cover will be printed on a metallic paper and with a spot gloss.
But nWoD Dark Eras is like no other book we've ever Kickstarted because getting the funding to do such an edition is just the beginning. Assuming our funding goal is met, we will then be throwing open the floor to you, our backers, to tell us what additional material you want to see in the book.
Using each Stretch Goal (see below) as an opportunity to add material, we have more than doubled the size of the book during the course of this Kickstarter. Now we will be asking you what additional Dark Eras we should add to the Dark Eras Companion, an additional project that every backer that has pledged to a Reward Tier that contains a nWoD Dark Eras PDF will recieve as a PDF, and every backer who has pledged to a Reward Tier that contains the nWoD Dark Eras Prestige Edition will get both the PDF and a discounted coupon for the PoD physical book of the Dark Eras Companion.
Once we hear from you, our backers, we will put your suggestions to a vote and the suggestion with the most support will be created by our amazing creative teams once that Stretch Goal is achieved!
It's pretty easy. Contribute any amount you want, bearing in mind the levels of contribution and their commensurate rewards over there on the right. If we hit our $40K goal, you'll get the reward that goes with your level of contribution. PDFs and Print on Demand versions will be made available first in the form of a coupon from our online sales partner, DriveThruRPG. Make sure you pledge now, this Kickstarter is the only time this traditionally printed Prestige Edition version will be available (although the PDF and physical book PoD versions will be available via DriveThruRPG.com when the book is finished).
The Prestige Edition nWoD Dark Eras book will take multiple months from the closing date to print and ship as we expect to have many new Dark Era chapters to create due to your support. PDF Rewards and Add-ons will not take as long as the Deluxe, but will come after the Surveys are returned at least two months after this KS closes. We will contact contributors in the upper tiers with details on their rewards.
You can Add-on the PDFs listed below to any Reward Tier pledge that already includes a nWoD Dark Eras PDF by clicking on your Reward Tier to the right, and then when you get to the pledge page that confirms your pledge amount, manually changing the amount of your pledge from the base Reward amount to that Reward amount plus the amount of each Add-on that you want as listed below:
You can also add on individual copies of the nWoD Dark Eras Prestige Edition book to any pledge that already is shipping a physical book by manually adding the appropriate amount on the pledge page:
You can add on the nWoD Dark Eras Storyteller's Screen, a sturdy three-panel screen featuring the beautiful collage of Dark Eras art on the outer side, and on the inside there's a selection of charts and other info to make the Storyteller's job a little bit easier, to any reward tier that offers a physical book:
If we have contributions beyond our target number, we've planned many added rewards for contributors. Most of these involve either more material added to an existing chapter, or entirely new Dark Eras. Unlike our previous Kickstarters, though, we will be asking our backers via Updates to vote on which Dark Eras get expanded or added by going to the Onyx Path website and voting.
HERE IS THE LINK TO THE POLL WHERE YOU CAN VOTE:
You can keep track of how the book is growing using this handy graphic which we'll change as the project develops:
If we pass$128,000, we're offering a choice between:
- Vampire: Jazz Age Requiem
- Vampire: The Orient Express
- Vampire: The 1893 Chicago World's Fair
- Werewolf: Forsaken by Rome
- Hunter: 1830s India
- Hunter: WWII in the Pacific
- Hunter: The Spanish Inquisition
- Hunter: The Book of Judges
- Innocents: The Blitz
- Geist: The Golden Age of Piracy
- Geist: 1970s-1980s Haiti
Estimated Delivery Dates:
Most importantly, the "Estimated Delivery" dates have been extended much further out than we hope to be delivering. Experience has taught that it is better to extend far past our expectations.
We've Included PoDs:
We are including the Print on Demand version of Dark Eras in the form of a link to DriveThruRPG that enables you to purchase the PoD version (your choice of either Standard or Premium color) for as close to cost as we can give it to you. Because the PoD printer adjusts their pricing for PoDs as they need to, we can't provide a solid $$ amount of what you'll need to pay, but it will be less than a non-backer ordering one. This inclusion is because many backers want a physical version while their Deluxe versions are being traditionally printed.
We will be using a shipping fulfillment service that performed excellently with our latest Kickstarter ship-out for Demon: The Descent and Deluxe Anarchs Unbound. They have multiple well-rated Kickstarter ship-outs under their belt, other positive reviews online, and most importantly for many of our backers: they provide emailed tracking numbers.
We are continuing to include two Retailer Reward Tiers, one US and one non-US, because we want to be able to support all the great Retailers out there who have supported White Wolf and now Onyx Path over the years. We have a special reward price just for Retailers (someone who owns a store that would sell Dark Eras Prestige Edition) and anyone thinking of pledging to those Retailer Reward Tiers needs to contact me: email@example.com to confirm that you are operating or representing a store before pledging, please. Any pledges to those Retailer Reward Tiers which do not have confirmations of status will not be honored when sending out Rewards.
We also have been forced by the multiple overt shipping charge increases that have occurred this last year to include that cost in the Reward Tier pledge amounts. We do continue to have US and non-US reward tiers for several Rewards so that the specific shipping costs can be built into the pledges, as there was just too much confusion when we tried to leave it to folks to manually add shipping. We do not, however, try to add in or calculate each country's VAT. That amount, if any, will be an extra charge between you and your customs officials.
Risks and challenges
Risk: This book isn't created at all even though the goal is reached.
Solution: We have successfully shipped eight Kickstarter projects and one more Deluxe project is at the printer as you read this. All those books have taught us how the various pieces of the process works, sometimes painfully, and we have increased our ability to judge the various stages of delivery better with each KS. The creators of Prestige Edition Dark Eras have over a century of combined experience in the writing, art direction, developing and layout of beautiful tabletop RPG books. The book is in the middle of creating the layout files, which means 90% of the art and text is completely finished.
Risk: Shipping costs soak up pledges that were meant to enable the creation of the Dark Eras Prestige Edition.
Solution: Kickstarter shipping costs have continued to rise dramatically this last year, but we are aware of that and were able to find ways to work with shippers to bring down those costs - unfortunately, only to some extent as we have also needed to up the shipping charges- both methods allowing us to be sure that shipping doesn't eat up the pledge money supposed to go to printing.
Risk: The books will take a long time to produce and anger the backers.
Solution: We've learned many, many lessons with our previous Kickstarters and we're becoming much better at estimating the various pitfalls that will delay a KS project. We were able to deliver the PDFs for our last several KS projects several months before the estimate, and are ahead of the game for the current physical book at press as well. That being said, backers need to be aware that they are enabling a process, and not a pre-order opportunity, and things do sometimes run slower than we want or anticipate with that process. We've found that an open flow of communication between us and the backer community is vital so once the project funds we will deliver Updates on progress once a month (or more, as needed) via Kickstarter as well as in our regular, weekly, Monday Meeting Notes blog at www.theonyxpath.comLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
