About this project
Find Your Destiny
Live The Myth
Embrace Your Fate
Scion is a game about gods, humanity, and everything in between. It’s a game about mythic deeds and the legends those deeds engender.
The ancient powers never fully went away. They wander our modern roads and cities, mingling with the teeming masses of humanity. You are one of their children, born to the magic of yesterday and the promise of tomorrow.
Armed with weapons possessed of mighty powers, the Scions, divine offspring of both god and man, stand as humanity’s only defense against the savage Titans, dread forebears of the gods. Even the gods themselves cannot stand united, as ancient rivalries spring forth once more.
Will you rise to the heights of power through your heroism?
Will you become more than just a pawn in a spiteful divine game?
What great events will mark your ascent to godhood?
Scion Second Edition relaunches the award-winning Scion tabletop RPG setting with books which define and expand the game’s setting, called the World, and the godly pantheons defining that World.
We are starting with Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero, corebooks which are used together to play Scions that begin as mortals in Scion: Origin, and fan the spark of divinity within in Scion: Hero. Ultimately we will continue the series with further corebooks that allow the player characters to increase in power until they take their seats at the right hand of their parents, the gods. Or perhaps, overthrow them.
Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero, are corebooks that together contain the rules for the Storypath System, the setting of the World, and how to make characters in the World of Scion.
You must have both Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero in order to play at the Hero level.
Scion: Origin will include:
• The Storypath System: These rules provide a foundation for playing any character — mortal or god — in the Scion World. (See the section about the Storypath System below).
• Character Options: Ranging from pre-Visitation Scions to Therianthropes to Beserkers; and many more.
• A detailed setting exploring different relationships between the gods and humanity.
Scion: Hero will include:
• Supernatural Paths: Genesis, Calling, and Pantheon. Scions are born, are created, are chosen by the gods, and this Genesis act colors their entire life. They’ve also got Callings, or aspirations towards the kind of god they want to be — such as a Warrior, a Lover, a Healer — that determine the supernatural gifts they receive. Lastly, they’re born into or join a Pantheon, the grand collection of gods with their own rivalries and politics.
• Divine Pantheons: Ten global pantheons that act as parents and patrons for Scions: Algonquin, Aztec, Chinese, Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Vedic, Irish, Japanese, Norse, and Yoruba.
• Purviews and Boons: Discrete elemental miracles tied into the powers of the World, granting Scions influence over their powers of their parents: fire, the sea, the forge, thunder and the sky, and many others.
• Knacks: Empowered by divine archetypes, Scions are allowed truly superhuman action hero moves or suave dramatic powers that defy belief.
• Explorations of the nature of Scions and their relationships, from their first godly Visitation to the titanspawn who curse their very existence.
• Requires Scion: Origin to play.
To get you started, here are some links to selected unedited text from the books:
First, an extended Preview: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7FqViticwNubWNsYjBPQmdIY2M/view?usp=sharing
We will be adding sections here and providing other excerpts in KS Updates as this Kickstarter progresses. All the text is in the "redline" stage of creation, where developer Neall Raemonn Price is making notes for the writers to follow for their final drafts.
The Storypath System is Onyx Path's new rules set designed specifically to allow the sort of rules scaling necessary to seamlessly enable players to play ordinary people as well as characters with the power of gods, and everything in between.
The basics of the Storypath System should be familiar to anyone who played Scion in the past, as it is a 10-sided dicepool system, where in order to resolve an action you basically roll a number of dice equal to the character's Attribute + Skill and must roll an 8 or better a certain number of times in order to succeed in the action.
That is the very basic resolution system, but we expand on that to further enhance how your gaming group can build their stories. Failing to hit your number of successes, or having more successes than your required amount, are built-in options in the rules. Here is a handy graphic that illustrates what we mean:
To further explain the basics of the Storypath System, here is a small PDF download that goes into more detail:
We’re running this Kickstarter so we can both make the best versions of Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero that we can, adding more art and maybe a jot more writing to make these complete and amazing books. And then get enough printed to get them into book and game stores around the world!
We love retailers, but modern publishing methods don’t always make it easy for them to get books into their stores. With Scion 2nd Edition, we want to try and get at least one print run of the game into stores, so everyone can get a chance to experience it.
And any Retailer who pledges at the Retailer Tier level will get the traditionally printed books first, five of each of the books for the KS reward cost of four, and ten free Scion 2nd Reference Screens, as our way of saying thanks for backing.
If funded, each book will be full-color 8.5" x 11" hardcover traditionally printed volumes with a combination of matte and gloss finishes on the cover. We estimate Scion: Origin will be around 120 pages, and Scion: Hero will have around 240 pages.
Neall, RichT and the Scion 2nd Edition creative team will be discussing Scion 2nd on various blogs and podcasts as this Kickstarter runs, so here are some links to those:
Neall is interviewed by Dave Martin and his Wrecking Crew for their podcast at Gen Con, and he talks a bit about Scion, and a bunch of other things: http://thewreckingcrew.org/the-red-list/the-red-list-neall-raemonn-price-at-gencon-2016/
Here Neall is interviewed by an old friend of his, writer Monica Speca on 1d4cast Podcast, so the verbal sparring is a bit of teasing fun: http://1d4cast.org/interview-ep-5/
Neall is on the Polyhedron Podcast talkin' some Scion 2nd Edition: http://www.headcanongames.com/polyhedron/2016/9/21/episode-018-how-do-i-become-a-god-wneall-price
James Mendez Hodes, one of the writers, talks Pantheons with Brie Sheldon: http://www.briecs.com/2016/10/five-or-so-questions-with-james-mendez-hodes-on-scion-2nd-edition.html?m=1
Brie also interviewed writer Geoffrey McVey:
Contribute any amount you want, bearing in mind the levels of contribution and their commensurate rewards over there on the right. If we hit our goal, you’ll get the reward that goes with your level of contribution.
If you just want the two books, for example, you would pledge to the $85 Reward Tier titled Scion.
In addition to the PDFs and traditionally printed physical books that we're making for this project, we also offer coupons, in any Reward Tier offering a physical book, for "at cost" Print on Demand physical books you can choose to purchase from DriveThruRPG.com , usually after the PDF but before your traditionally printed books are shipped. We offer these discounted PoD books because some backers really want to play ASAP with a physical book, and don't want to wait for traditional printing and shipping to go through their paces. You DO NOT need to take advantage of this discount PoD offer as it does not affect in any way your pledge Rewards.
Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero will take multiple months from the closing date to print and ship. During that time we will be using Backerkit to process and deliver your pledge Rewards, Add-ons, and anything additional you wish to add on after the KS is over. Backerkit has been the back-end service for about a thousand Kickstarters and has a sterling reputation for customer service and security.
You can even easily change your shipping address if you move by going right to your BackerKit survey page and inputting the new one.
You can Add-on the PDFs listed below to any Reward Tier pledge that already includes a Scion: Origin or Scion: Hero PDF by clicking on your Reward Tier to the right, and then when you get to the pledge page that confirms your pledge amount, manually changing the amount of your pledge from the base Reward amount to that Reward amount plus the amount of each Add-on that you want as listed below :
+ $10 for the Scion: Origin PDF.
+ $15 for the Scion: Hero PDF.
+ $25 for the Complete Scion 1st Edition Bundle of PDFs which contains: Scion: Hero 1st Edition, Scion: Demigod 1st Edition, Scion: God 1st Edition, Scion Companion 1st Edition, Scion Companion 1e Character Sheets, Scion: Ragnarok, Yazata: the Persian Gods, Scion: Extras, Scion: Of Shadows Yet To Come Quickstart, and the adventures Seeds Of Tomorrow and Wolfsheim. + $15 for the Scion 2nd Edition Reference Screen, a sturdy three-panel screen featuring beautiful art from Scion 2nd Edition on the outer side, and on the inside there's a selection of charts and other info to make referencing a little bit easier.
You can add on the Deluxe Scion 2e Dice Set to any reward tier that includes a physical book by clicking on your Reward Tier to the right, and then when you get to the pledge page that confirms your pledge amount, manually changing the amount of your pledge from the base Reward amount to that Reward amount plus the amount of each Add-on that you want as listed below:

Backers who pledged for a reward tier containing the PDFs of Origin or Hero will receive this game for free on their Earplay accounts and on their devices.
At $230,000 we will add a section containing Build Your Own Purviews rules to the Scion 2nd Companion. We'll also recreate the Frost Purview, for Scions of winter and snow.
At $235,000 we will upgrade our art budget, enabling us to increase the amount of beautiful art in the two books.

Scions channel the powers of their parents through these items. With this stretch goal, we greatly expand the relic section from the corebook, giving you many more options, examples, and alternate systems to craft the weapons of the gods both in and out of character.

Our goal is present as much relevant information about your character and the systems they interact with, in a nice readable way."
At $290,000, we will add a section featuring some other divine parents and guidance on playing Scions of your parent's different divine mantles, or identities, to the Scion Companion. At $310,000, we will create a Community Content section on DTRPG.com that will allow folks who adhere to our standards' guide to create and post their own Scion 2e material on a royalty basis. We will also open up Scion 2e to licensed publishing with other companies. Setting up these programs is something we have never done before, so it will take work to figure out the details, but we believe Scion will become all the richer a game line with these programs in place.
At $320,000, we'll add a section to the Scion Bestiary on and discussing Legendary Warriors, such as amazons, berserkers, and maharathis. Will your Scion join their ranks, or will they face these powerful legacies in combat? Backers who pledge for reward tiers including physical copies of Scion: Origin or Scion: Hero will receive this as a PDF.
At $330,000, we'll include centaurs in the Scion Bestiary, including classic Greek, modern American bikers, and variations like the nucklavee. Backers who pledge for reward tiers including physical copies of Scion: Origin or Scion: Hero will receive this as a PDF.
This is our twenty-first Onyx Path Kickstarter, and we have learned enough (sometimes painfully) to make some tweaks to our goals, reward tiers, and prizes. One of those things is that we tend to get the same questions asked during each Kickstarter, but have a limit on the amount of text we can put on this KS page, so we're hosting a FAQ here:
Risks and challenges
Risk: This book isn't created at all even though the goal is reached.
Solution: We have successfully shipped thirteen Kickstarter projects, with two others at press, and several more are headed to completion as you read this. All those books have taught us how the various pieces of the process works, sometimes painfully, and we have increased our ability to judge the various stages of delivery better with each KS. The current text for both Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero has passed through the First Draft stage into being notated by the developer in the Redline phase prior to Final Drafts, and we are going to carefully limit the amount of new text from Stretch Goals and Rewards.
Risk: Shipping costs soak up pledges that were meant to enable the creation of Scion: Origin and Scion: Hero.
Solution: Kickstarter shipping costs have continued to rise dramatically this last year, but we are aware of that and were able to find ways to work with shippers to bring down those costs - unfortunately, only to some extent as we have also needed to up the shipping charges- both methods allowing us to be sure that shipping doesn't eat up the pledge money supposed to go to printing. For the first time, because of Kickstarter adding the option to their tools, we are able to be more specific as to shipping costs based on your country. These costs will be added to your pledge automatically by KS if you are outside the US. As always, local or VAT style taxes will need to be paid by the backer when appropriate and are not included in these costs. And we are working with our shippers to ship from the EU and thus avoid those customs and handling fees we’ve previously had to pass on to our EU backers.
Risk: The books will take a long time to produce and anger the backers.
Solution: We've learned many, many lessons with our previous Kickstarters and we're becoming much better at estimating the various pitfalls that will delay a KS project. We were able to deliver the PDFs for several of our last KS projects several months before the estimate, and recent Kickstarters started shipping in the month or the month before we estimated. That being said, backers need to be aware that they are enabling a process, and not a pre-order opportunity, and things do sometimes run slower than we want or anticipate with that process.
We've found that an open flow of communication between us and the backer community is vital so once the project funds we will deliver regular Updates on progress via Kickstarter as well as in our regular, weekly, Monday Meeting Notes blog at www.theonyxpath.comLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
