About this project
Imagine being both dead and deathless at the same time. Imagine being
cradled in the arms of death for years, sometimes decades on end, but
all the while knowing that you will eventually not only arise again, but
awaken to an unfamiliar world that mostly fears and hates you. Now
imagine that your purpose, your entire existence, is bound within this
cycle -- that you are chained to it for all eternity. You sleep, you
wake, your serve your Judge's will in the lands of the living, and you
return to the death-sleep once more. The ancient culture that empowered
you is gone, lost to the sands of time... yet you endure.
In Mummy: The Curse, a Storytelling game set in the World of Darkness, you play one of these beings. Those who know they exist, from the cultists who serve them to the dark forces arrayed against them, call them the Deathless.
We call them mummies.
From C.A. Suleiman, Mummy: The Curse Developer and writer:
About a decade ago, White Wolf released a game called Mummy: The Resurrection as the core offering for its Year of the Scarab. When the Time of Judgment rolled around, that game and its continuity were put to rest, along with the other classic World of Darkness lines; but endings breed new beginnings, and in the course of developing the end of that game, a vision for a new mummy-focused roleplaying experience began to take shape. It would be a decade before that vision could come to life, but here we are at last.
Welcome to Mummy: The Curse, a new World of Darkness roleplaying game. As developer, I couldn't be more excited to roll this out. Not simply because it was my brainchild, or because of all the hard work my team and I have put in on it so far, but because I'm as proud of it as I am of anything I've done in my career. And also because, let's be frank, it's been a bit too long since we, as fans (and I happily admit that I got my start as a fan), have gotten a new World of Darkness game. Well, the wait's over, friends.
Mummy represents a step in a new direction, the first core release of the new era under Onyx Path Publishing, and this is just the beginning. Not only are supplements already on the way, but if things go well, we'll be using some of the design philosophies implemented here in future products, as well. So, regardless of your overall interest in this vision of mummies walking a world of darkness, this is a product to watch and we hope you'll stay tuned and engaged as we move forward.
As always, you guys are the reason we can even do this, and we promise never to forget that.

This Mummy: The Curse Kickstarter is designed to enable us to create a hardcover edition designed to match the look and feel of our other New World of Darkness core rulebooks such as Vampire: The Requiem or Changeling: The Lost. This consists of an 8.5" x 11" hard cover with a beautifully designed, symbolic cover image and a two-color interior and endpapers featuring all new artwork. Estimated between 280-300 pages. We're going to publish this as a PDF and as a Print on Demand physical book regardless of how this Kickstarter turns out, but we know that a fair percentage of our community would like to set this newest nWoD game on their shelves with the previous game lines.
We're also aware that our community is just as affected by the current economic climate as anyone else, so this Kickstarter's funding goal and reward pledge tiers are set at the least amounts that allow us to create the highest quality hard cover without moving into more expensive to print "Deluxe" features.
At least at first...
When and if we pass our Funding Goal, we will set Stretch Goals that add Deluxe features, and if we continue to pass those goals, we'll continue to add more Deluxe features. We'll be talking with our community here on Kickstarter as well as on our forums, Facebook page, Twitter, etc, as this happens so that your ideas and suggestions are taken into account when we set new goals. And in the midst of these Deluxe feature upgrades, we'll be adding other cool Stretch Goals.
As with the successful KSs for the Deluxe V20 Companion, Deluxe V20 Children of the Revolution, and the Deluxe Werewolf: The Apocalypse 20th Anniversary Edition, we are trying to find ways to give our backers the chance to have a say in the kind of package we'll deliver and to further foster the community of World of Darkness fans around the world. Some of the text was reviewed and commented on by fans on the WW Mummy Blogs, and critical changes were made based on your input. We had a blast talking with the community during the previous KSs and fully hope that every backer of this KS will enjoy commenting both here and on the WW Blogs: http://whitewolfblogs.com/
In addition, C.A. Suleiman will be taking an active role in answering your questions and comments here on the Mummy: The Curse Kickstarter, and will be sending out many of the Updates, so that between the two of us we should be able to cover any questions. We have a great community and want to hear from more of you, so please comment away!
This is our fourth KS, and so there are some tweaks to our goals, reward tiers, and prizes. For example, because of the incredible response to the PDFs we offered with the Deluxe Children of the Revolution and the Deluxe W20, we are offering several reward tiers that include collections of classic previous editions of Mummy in PDF form. (These are offered as they exist on DriveThruRPG and may be scans of the original printed books, or may have been rebuilt as original electronic files depending on their age). These rewards may also be added to any of the other reward tiers by manually increasing your pledge as noted below.
We have included two Retailer Reward Tiers, one US and one non-US, because we want to be able to support all the great Retailers out there who have supported WW for these past several decades. We have a special reward price just for Retailers (someone who owns a store that would sell Mummy: The Curse) and anyone thinking of pledging to those Retailer Reward Tiers needs to contact me: email@example.com to confirm that you are operating or representing a store before pledging, please. Any pledges to those Retailer Reward Tiers which do not have confirmations of status will not be honored when sending out Rewards.
We have returned to creating US and non-US reward tiers so that the specific shipping costs for physical rewards can be built into the pledges, as there was just too much confusion when we tried to leave it to folks to manually add shipping. We do not, however, try to add in or calculate each country's VAT. That amount, if any, will be an extra charge between you and your customs officials.
It's pretty easy. Contribute any amount you want, bearing in mind the levels of contribution and their commensurate rewards over there on the right. If we hit our $30K goal, you'll get the reward that goes with your level of contribution. PDFs versions will be made available first in the form of a coupon from our online sales partner, DriveThruRPG. Mummy: The Curse will take several months from the closing date to print and ship. We will contact contributors in the upper tiers with details on their rewards.
You can Add-on the classic PDF collections to any pledge by clicking on your Reward Tier to the right, and then when you get to the pledge page that confirms your pledge amount, manually changing the amount of your pledge from the base Reward amount to that Reward amount plus the amount of each Add-on that you want as listed below :
- + $10 for the classic Mummy: The Resurrection PDF.
- + $10 for the World of Darkness: Reliquary PDF.
- + $10 for the World of Darkness Core Rulebook PDF.
- + $15 for both the classic Mummy First Edition and Mummy Second Edition PDFs.
You can also add on individual copies of the Mummy: The Curse to any pledge that already is shipping a physical book by manually adding the appropriate amount on the pledge page:
- + $35 for a Mummy: The Curse Core Rulebook (US)
- + $45 for a Mummy: The Curse Core Rulebook (non-US)
You can add on the MtC Storyteller's Screen to any reward tier that offers a physical book:
+ $10 for the MtC Storyteller's Screen, a sturdy three-panel screen featuring the beautiful collage of MtC art on the outer side, and on the inside there's a selection of charts and other info to make the Storyteller's job a little bit easier.
You must type in the correct amount calculated by adding the base Reward amount and the Add-ons you want. It does not happen automatically.
If we have contributions beyond our target number, we've planned several stretch goal rewards for contributors:
At $35,000 of contributions, we will add a silk bookmark to all physical copies of Mummy: The Curse as the first of our upgrades adding Deluxe features.
At $45,000 of contributions, C.A. Suleiman (developer of Mummy: The Curse) will develop a MtC Anthology consisting of five novellas, one for each Guild, that will be delivered in PDF and ebook formats to all our backers months before it is put on sale through normal channels.
At $50,000 of contributions, you have unlocked a reward tier and Add-on that features a Mummy: The Curse Storyteller's Screen- 3 panels of heavy stock with the beautiful wallpaper collage of the art on one side and all the charts you need to run the game on the other. Use it at your table, or hang it on your wall (hopefully, art-side out, but that's your call).
At $55,000 of contributions, we will a add gold gilding to the page edging as a Deluxe Feature to every copy of the Mummy: The Curse as we evolve the project based on your support.
At $63,000 of contributions, we will create Cursed Necropolis: Washington DC, a citybook for MtC. Massive museums, visitors and diplomats from around the world, political corruption and deadly secrets, and symbolic architecture, all combine for a setting perfect for the Arisen. We expect this PDF to be about 80 pages and will be given to anyone who backed for either PDF or physical copies of Mummy: The Curse.
At $68,000 of contributions, every backer who pledged for the Scribe Reward Tier level or more will receive a copy of the Mummy: The Resurrection Player's Guide PDF.
At $72,000 of contributions we add another Deluxe Feature by embossing the title logo and spine of every physical copy of Mummy: The Curse.
At $80,000 of contributions, we will create Cursed Necropolis: Rio, a companion citybook to Cursed Necropolis: DC that expands on the idea of signature cities being outside the US and delves into how the deathless view a city full of life. We expect this PDF to be about 80 pages and will be given to anyone who backed for either PDF or physical copies of Mummy: The Curse.
At $84,000 of contributions, every backer who pledged for the Scribe Reward Tier level or more will receive a set of Mummy: The Curse Interactive PDF Character Sheets emblazoned with the symbols of the Guilds and Decrees. This level also unlocked the new Reward Tiers for the MtC Starter Kits, and the WoD Core Rulebook PDF Add-On.
At $88,000 of contributions, every backer who pledged for the Scribe Reward Tier level or more will receive a PDF copy of the Mummy: The Curse Ready Made Character Set containing: Five pre-generated player characters, with both starting and experienced character sheets. A brief break-down of the character’s history to help players jump into the group. Storyteller advice for the group.
.At $94,000 of contributions, every backer who pledged for the Scribe Reward Tier level or more will receive a copy of the Dreams of Avarice PDF, a personal manifesto penned by the mummy the Arisen call the Heretic. Similar to the Book of Nod (for Vampire), this 6" x 9" and 120+ page chapbook will function as both setting reference and in-game prop.
At $100,000 of contributions, every backer who pledged for the Scribe Reward Tier level or more will receive a PDF copy of a Mummy: The Curse novel developed by C.A. Suleiman. We have several authors pitching ideas for this volume designed to reveal further secrets of the Arisen.
At $104,000 of contributions we will upgrade Dreams of Avarice to full color.
At $110,000 of contributions, every backer who pledged for the Scribe Reward Tier level or more will receive a PDF copy of a Book of Going Westward, a Mummy: The Curse project developed by C.A. Suleiman that details each and every of the 42 Judges of Duat. These godlike entities are believed to be more connected than any other entities to Fate, and their active manipulations are essential to understanding the Arisen.
At $116,000 of contributions, for Book of Going Westward, each Judge will receive a portrait piece of art and the book will be presented in color.
As stated above we have big plans for the Stretch Goals and further surprises in mind if we go past these...
Whatever the outcome, we're still using these Kickstarter projects to gauge the players' interest in future World of Darkness titles. Using Kickstarter, we're able to produce books more quickly and deliver them directly to the players, skipping the distribution system entirely. Simply put, if this experiment continues to work, we'll make it a business model, and bring you more supplementary World of Darkness material faster, and incorporate your feedback at every step of the way.
Risks and challenges
Risk: This book isn't created at all even though the goal is reached.
Solution: We have successfully shipped one Deluxe book funded by KS backers, and a second is shipping right now. Both those books have taught us how the various pieces of the process works, and the creators of Mummy: The Curse have over a century of combined experience in the writing, art direction, developing and layout of World of Darkness books.
Risk: The writing or art isn't finished.
Solution: The writing is already finished and the book will have been laid out by the time this is posted. All of the art is in.
Risk: Costs for creating the Stretch Goals bankrupt the project before they are created.
Solution:We had over 16 Stretch Goals on the W20 project and learned just how to stagger the goals so that each will be paid for by leaping through the Stretch Goal amounts. This is why we don't do physical manufactured rewards all that often.
Risk: The books will take a long time to produce and anger the backers.
Solution: While we can't moderate the thoughts and emotions of every backer, we have learned just how important keeping an open flow of communication between us and the backer community truly is and we're committed to continuing to build that communication via Kickstarter as well as our brand new website at www.theonyxpath.com
There is no normal for a Kickstarter project- 30 days is recommended, but we're trying a slightly shorter time period until Jan 10th in part because the overall project already has a group of fans interested and excited about it, so we think we actually need less time to get the word out.
A little after the Mummy: The Curse Kickstarter closes, I'll send out a Survey as part of the KS process that will include areas to list your Add-ons.
