About this project
Angels are everywhere. They are under the everyday world, behind it, beyond it. They are sent by the God-Machine to enact its will through time and space, delivering messages, building infrastructure, protecting some people, killing others. And you were one of those angels...
But not anymore.
In Demon: The Descent, you play one of the fallen agents of the God-Machine, a former angel who defected to the human race. Now you are Unchained, and search for a place that you can be free, all the while avoiding the notice of the still-loyal agents. You cannot go back to the shining, sterile Heaven.
All you can do is reign in Hell.
Demons must move carefully through the shadowy streets and labyrinthine back alleys of the World of Darkness. The God-Machine and its agents are always watchful for a chance to reclaim these assets. The Unchained use a wide variety of powers, including Embeds that allow them to alter the world on a concept level, and Exploits, which allow great destructive and manipulative power — at the cost of compromising their whereabouts.
The Unchained must take extreme care as they search for Hell. They are pursued by a faceless, vastly powerful entity that has unlimited time and resources, and they have already fallen once.
But what has fallen may rise again.
Demon: The Descent was created by Rose Bailey and co-developed with Matthew McFarland, and is inspired by classic spy thrillers and gnostic mysticism. It ties back into the mythology of the God-Machine first hinted at in the World of Darkness core book and expanded in the recent and popular God-Machine Chronicle. Demon: The Descent requires the World of Darkness core rulebook to play, but does not require the God Machine Chronicle.
Demon: The Descent is the ninth game in the new World of Darkness, and the first new game to be written with the God-Machine Chronicle’s rules revision. It includes new information on the God-Machine and its activities, complete rules for playing and running Demon chronicles, a detailed setting in the city of Seattle, and a complete adventure written in the Storytelling Adventure System, entitled How an Angel Dies.

This Demon: The Descent Kickstarter is designed to enable us to create a prestige hardcover edition designed to match the look and feel of our other New World of Darkness core rulebooks such as Vampire: The Requiem, Changeling: The Lost, or Mummy: The Curse.
We want to create an 8.5" x 11" hard cover with a beautifully designed, symbolic cover image printed on a metallic under layer, and featuring an emboss/deboss of the logo and mirror cracks. We estimate the book to be about 400 pages, with a two-color interior and endpapers on high quality paper stock featuring all new artwork. We're going to publish this as a PDF and as a Print on Demand physical book regardless of how this Kickstarter turns out, but we know that a fair percentage of our community would like to set this newest nWoD game on their shelves with the previous game lines.
As with our previous successful KSs such as Mummy: The Curse, Deluxe The Hunters Hunted 2, and Deluxe W20 Changing Breeds, we are trying to find ways to give our backers the chance to have a say in the kind of package we'll deliver and to further foster the community of World of Darkness fans around the world. Some of the text was reviewed and commented on by fans on the Demon Blogs, and critical changes were made based on your input. We had a blast talking with the community during the previous KSs and fully hope that every backer of this KS will enjoy commenting here.
In addition, developers Rose Bailey and Matthew McFarland will be taking an active role in answering your questions and comments here on the Demon: The Descent Kickstarter, and will be sending out many of the Updates, so that between the three of us we should be able to cover any questions. We have a great community and want to hear from more of you, so please comment away!
It's pretty easy. Contribute any amount you want, bearing in mind the levels of contribution and their commensurate rewards over there on the right. If we hit our $40K goal, you'll get the reward that goes with your level of contribution. PDFs versions will be made available first in the form of a coupon from our online sales partner, DriveThruRPG.
The Demon: The Descent Prestige Edition will take multiple months from the closing date to print and ship. We will contact contributors in the upper tiers with details on their rewards.
You can Add-on the PDFs listed below to any Reward Tier pledge that already includes a PDF by clicking on your Reward Tier to the right, and then when you get to the pledge page that confirms your pledge amount, manually changing the amount of your pledge from the base Reward amount to that Reward amount plus the amount of each Add-on that you want as listed below :

You can add on the Demon: The Descent Storyteller's Screen to any reward tier that offers a physical book:
+ $15 for the Demon: The Descent Storyteller's Screen, a sturdy three-panel screen featuring the beautiful collage of DtD art on the outer side, and on the inside there's a selection of charts and other info to make the Storyteller's job a little bit easier.
You must type in the correct amount calculated by adding the base Reward amount and the Add-ons you want. It does not happen automatically.
If we have contributions beyond our target number, we've planned several stretch goal rewards for contributors, including but not limited to, a fiction anthology, a Seattle Sourcebook, Demon Adventures in the style presented in the God Machine Chronicle, and more:
Now that we've reached $50,000 of contributions, we will add a silk bookmark to all physical copies of Demon: The Descent Prestige Edition as a special upgrade to our Prestige features.
Having reached $65,000 of contributions, we'll create an 80 page PDF sourcebook on Seattle, a rain-slick city where demons and angels hunt each other through fragments of fractured time and send it to every backer who has pledged to a Reward Tier that includes a PDF of D:tD.
Reaching $75,000, we began the Demon Seed Collection, a PDF of short adventures set in different cities around the world. These will be 5,000 words each, similar to the stories in The God-Machine Chronicle. The Collection will be sent to every backer who pledged for a Reward Tier that includes a PDF of Demon: The Descent.
Having achieved $90,000, we'll develop a set of ready-made characters for Demon. Similar to those published for our earlier games, this will be a ring of demons presented with character backgrounds, character sheets at two levels of experience, and Ciphers. The Demon Ready Made Characters PDF will be sent to every backer who has pledged to a Reward Tier that includes a Demon: The Descent PDF.
Now that we've reached $100,000, we'll be developing Demon Seed #2, to be included in the Demon Seed Collection PDF, which will take place in a different city and deal with a different sort of God-Machine scheme. The Collection will be sent to every backer who pledged for a Reward Tier that includes a PDF of Demon: The Descent.
Having achieved $105,000, we'll be creating a set of Demon Condition Cards, to make it easier to track the Conditions that apply to your character during the game. This will include the "core" Conditions introduced in The God-Machine Chronicle. A PDF of the Demon Condition Cards will be released to every backer who pledged for a Reward Tier that includes a PDF of Demon: The Descent, and each of those backers will also receive a discount on buying physical copies from DriveThruRPG.com.
Now that we've passed $110,000, every Reward Tier than includes a physical copy of the Demon: The Descent Prestige Edition will be upgraded to also include a coupon for a discounted Demon: The Descent PoD in addition to each physical copy. This discount will reduce the price of the PoD of Demon to as close to "at cost" as we can make it, and the backer will have to pay the normal DTRPG shipping.
We've reached $115,000, funding a short supplement called Heirs to Hell. This book will cover playing the children of demons, who inherit some of their parents' fallen nature. See the update for more details. Every backer who pledged for a PDF or more of Demon: The Descent will receive this PDF.
Having reached $117,500, we'll give a little something extra to our writing team. At that level, each of the writers will receive a pay bump, above their normal per-word rate. They've opened up a whole new slice of the World of Darkness for you to play in, and we'd like to give them a bonus.
Now that we've reached $120,000, we'll give everyone who pledged for a physical copy of Demon: The Descent a discount on a print on demand copy of The God-Machine Chronicle, the book which set the stage for Demon. This discount will be as close to at-cost as we can manage; you'll need to pay for shipping individually.
Achieving $122,500, we'll be creating the third Demon Seed, set in a new city and covering a different project of the God-Machine.
Now that we've passed 125,000, we'll start a fiction anthology, in the style of The God-Machine Chronicle Anthology. This stretch goal funds the first story. Backers who pledged for a PDF or more of Demon: The Descent will receive an electronic copy of the anthology.
Achieving $127,500, we'll develop a fourth Demon Seed, set in a new location and with an all-new adventure.
Having reached $130,000, we'll add a second all-new story to the Demon Anthology.
Reaching $132,500, we'll create the fifth Demon Seed, once again in a new place with a new hook.
Achieving $135,000, we're adding a third all-new story to the Demon Anthology.
Now that we've passed $137,500 and $140,000, we'll be adding a fourth and fifth story to the Demon Anthology.
Having reached $144,000, we'll upgrade the anthology with the Demon Anthology Interface. The Interface will be 2,000 words of rules and setting content for each story, fleshing out an element of the story for use at your gaming table. Everyone who pledged for a PDF or more of Demon will receive a PDF of this book.
At $146,500, we'll add a sixth all-new story to the Demon Anthology and Demon Anthology Interface.
This is our eighth KS, and so there are some tweaks to our goals, reward tiers, and prizes.
Most importantly, the "Estimated Delivery" dates have been extended far into next year much further than we hope to be delivering. Experience has taught that it is better to extend far past our expectations.
We also have been forced by the size- around 400 pages!- and therefore weight, of this book to increase pledge amounts to cover the two overt shipping charge increases that have occurred this last year. We continue to have US and non-US reward tiers so that the specific shipping costs for physical rewards can be built into the pledges, as there was just too much confusion when we tried to leave it to folks to manually add shipping. We do not, however, try to add in or calculate each country's VAT. That amount, if any, will be an extra charge between you and your customs officials.
Also, our previous new World of Darkness game Kickstarter for Mummy: The Curse had the book evolving with more and more Deluxe-style features as the Stretch Goals were passed. This seemed problematic for a lot of people as they preferred to know exactly what they were initially pledging to help us create. So Demon: The Descent's prestige look and features have been decided on and listed above. (Although we might still add a few features with the Stretch Goals if interest is there).
We have included two Retailer Reward Tiers, one US and one non-US, because we want to be able to support all the great Retailers out there who have supported WW and now Onyx Path. We have a special reward price just for Retailers (someone who owns a store that would sell Demon: The Descent) and anyone thinking of pledging to those Retailer Reward Tiers needs to contact me: firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm that you are operating or representing a store before pledging, please. Any pledges to those Retailer Reward Tiers which do not have confirmations of status will not be honored when sending out Rewards.
Whatever the outcome, we're still using these Kickstarter projects to gauge the players' interest in future Demon: The Descent and new World of Darkness titles. Using Kickstarter, we're able to produce books more quickly and deliver them directly to the players, skipping the distribution system entirely. Simply put, if this experiment continues to work, we'll continue to use and evolve it as a business model, and bring you more supplementary WoD material faster, and incorporate your feedback at every step of the way.
Risks and challenges
Risk: This book isn't created at all even though the goal is reached.
Solution: We have successfully shipped three and are in the process of shipping two more books funded by KS backers as you read this, and one more is at press. All those books have taught us how the various pieces of the process works, sometimes painfully, and we have increased our ability to judge the various stages of delivery better with each KS. The creators of Demon: The Descent have over a century of combined experience in the writing, art direction, developing and layout of beautiful tabletop RPG books. The book is in the second stage of proofing of the layout files, which means 99% of the art and text is completely finished.
Risk: Shipping costs soak up pledges that were meant to enable the creation of the Demon: The Descent Prestige Edition.
Solution: I was forewarned as to the extremely high costs of shipping such a big book outside the US (and shipping isn't cheap inside the US either for a book of that weight), and was able to find ways to work with other shippers to bring down those costs - unfortunately, only to some extent as we have also needed to up the shipping charges- both methods allowing us to be sure that shipping doesn't eat up the pledge money supposed to go to printing.
Risk: The books will take a long time to produce and anger the backers.
Solution: We've learned many, many lessons with our previous Kickstarters and we're becoming much better at estimating the various pitfalls that will delay a KS project. We were able to deliver the PDFs for our W20 Changing Breeds KS in the month estimated, even with an additional 30% added to the book via Stretch Goal rewards. That being said, backers need to be aware that they are enabling a process, and not a pre-order opportunity, and things do sometimes run slower than we want or anticipate with that process. We've found that an open flow of communication between us and the backer community is vital so once the project funds we will deliver Updates on progress twice a month (or more, as needed) via Kickstarter as well as in our regular, weekly, Monday Meeting Notes blog at www.theonyxpath.com
