Got my wonderful Mage 20th book a few weeks ago. And guess what I got yesterday?
An invoice. German customs demands 7% VAT for the book: 5,05€. However Fedex charges
in addition to that another 12,50€ in fees, and adds 19%VAT to that for a total of almost 20€.

It would really be nice, if international shipping was figured out well ahead of time, including customs duty and taxes, so that we can avoid delays and pesky extra costs from such fees.

After contacting them by email I have received one back from Fedex saying that now I only have to pay the tax sum of £4.79

Here is my letter to them which I based on a couple of folks who posted here (cheers). I'm UK based. Hope it helps and apologies for the length.

      __________

      Dear Fedex,

I have just received an invoice from you, reference ***, for £16.79 relating to a
previous delivery of a book from the United States.

The invoice breaks the charge down into two parts - a £4.79 "Disbursements
out of the scope of EU VAT" and £12.00 "Clearance Administration Charge
      vatable at 0.00%".

Given that the item was a book and subject to neither VAT nor customs duty
      - as confirmed on https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff/commodities/4901990000 -
I would like to know how Fedex actually determined this charge. Given that
the invoice lists £4.79 further up as "Original VAT", this appears to be an
error made by Fedex in which case the administration charge would seem
      quite unreasonable.

After having consulted my rights about the issue I agree to pay the VAT,
since USA is not in the EU, if and only if there is VAT to be paid on the
"Book" and "Game Screen", the latter of which is reference material made
      from card stock.

However, I refuse to pay the clearance admin charge since at no point was
I made aware of, nor did I agree to, any terms and conditions which clearly
stated that I would be liable for any such charges.

At no point in the transaction and subsequent delivery was any contract
for a clearance administration charge made between Fedex and myself.

I understand that the supplier (Onyx Path Publishing*) state on their
website (which was Kickstarter for this order) that they are not
responsible for custom brokerage fees but I was not made party to the
agreement between the supplying company in USA and Fedex and, thus, entered
into no contracts for any explicit charges with Fedex. I paid Onyx Path
Publishing (through Kickstarter) for delivery in good faith and no
agreement between Fedex and myself exists.

If you want to pursue further charges for delivery or administration or
the terms upon which goods are shipped, I suggest that you take it up with
      the organisation that hired you.

Therefore, I will happily pay the sum of *£4.79 *on the invoice for VAT if
it is applicable, but hereby request that you cancel the remaining sum
of £12.00 on the invoice for the clearance administration charge.

Please let me know when this has been done and I will call to pay the VAT
      sum of £4.79.

      Regards

    37. Martin Goodson on April 16, 2016

I also have received an invoice from Fedex for 16.79. £4.79 plus a £12 administration fee, and they list the following items under 'description of goods':

      Book 27.87
      Game Screen 5.97

The book, being a book, should not require any import duty/tax/vat as far as I knew (here in the UK).

That leaves the game screen. Which, at 5.97, is under what I understood to be a minimum of £15.

So, really, as far as I can see, no customs tax etc should have been charged at all, and FedEx shouldn't be charging me £12 for them paying £4.79 which shouldn't have been charged in the first place.

I tried ringing their helpline, but it was closed - so it eventually rang through to somebody in their Canada office who was absolutely useless. I'll be ringing them again on Monday.

If they're going to offer a service whereby they pay the taxes for you, they should be damn sure about what needs to be paid. I don't see why I should have to shell out £12 for them kindly offering to pay something that should never have needed paying in the first place.

    38. Rodolphe on April 13, 2016

      Same here in France. €8 Taxes + €12.50 FedEx fees + €2.50 VAT on fees = €23.00.
Paying import taxes is fine. Paying fees as the addressee is not.
Fees and VAT on fees to collect taxes are outrageous.

    39. Emma Ussel on April 13, 2016

Same in France. I don't mind the VAT itself, I do mind the Fedex Fees. Which should have been paid with shipping (because that shipping fee was outrageously high, I don't want to pay it TWICE if you see what I mean)

    40. MeetsInTaverns on April 11, 2016

I've mailed fedex with a combination of Tamsyn K's letter, and AstralWanderers - I'll also let folks know what the follow up is, and if it works out will be happy to post the letter here as a template for others to follow. -UK based.

    42. Tamsyn K on April 11, 2016

To quote their email "Having reviewed the above mentioned invoice, we can now confirm that a partial credit of 12 UKL has been raised, leaving an amount still due on the invoice of 4.79 UKL.".

As a backer living in Germany, I have also received an invoice by Fedex regarding the import VAT they disbursed (which is basically OK as I would have needed to pay this anyhow as a law-abiding citizen) and EUR 12.50 + taxes for the disbursement.

According to German law they would have needed a mandate by me for the disbursement, and as I did not mandate them, I do not have to pay the fee.

I have sent them the import VAT and told them by e-mail that I would not pay the fee. No answer, yet...

I don't now if there are other German backers having the same problem or how this situation compares to other countries, but I will keep you posted.

Well, after spending some time reviewing the Quintessence edition, I've run into one big problem.

The soft cover scratches *very* easily - just pressing a fingernail against it is enough to leave a permanent mark.

For a book this expensive to be so fragile is a huge disappointment - it pretty much rules it out for day-to-day use and means, even with careful handling, that that otherwise magnificent cover is going to look like a dog's breakfast in a few years' time.

Anyone have an idea on how to scratch-proof this thing?

    48. Christian Nord on April 8, 2016

Never ever use Fedex for shipping please! The handling fee invoice is a bummer. You had excellent fulfillment for your earlier KS's.

    49. MeetsInTaverns on April 8, 2016

      Stung here as well :S

    50. Tamsyn K on April 7, 2016

I got an invoice today as well. I don't mind paying VAT where due but £12 for FedEx handling fee? Can we go with a different shipper who doesn't take the piss? And if they were more expensive, were they £12 more expensive each? I think this will be my last OP KS if this is the shape of things. Already paid a lot more shipping than the US and then this!!
