About this project
Ruined My Rhythm, Volume Two is a 72-page square-bound graphic novel.
It is the 2nd volume of a 3-volume story.
What happens when you're homeless in an unfamiliar city?
A snarky, intelligent outsider, Maria is hard, edgy and tough, a combination of Lisbeth Salandar, the angry, volatile main character from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and cynical, witty, coming-of-age Enid Coleslaw from Daniel Clowes‘ Ghost World.
Maria Sanchez is a teenager from Springfield, MO. After stealing from her foster parents, she takes a Greyhound bus to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in hopes of finding her father. She meets some interesting people in Tulsa who attempt to be a part of her world.
Terri's really nice, but Maria just can't seem to tell her new best friend that she's homeless.
Here's an alarming stat:
Homelessness is a heavy burden to bear, especially for youth.
Our main character, Maria, tries to hide that she's homeless from everyone, even from her new friend, David.
Our 48-page Volume One was an introduction to the story and all the characters, except one.
Who is the new character introduced in Volume Two?
That would be the Professor.
While Maria faces the challenge of being a homeless teen on the streets of Tulsa, the Professor fights for sobriety.
Ruined My Rhythm addresses the difficulties of alcoholism.
*More than 22.5 million individuals in the U.S. have a drinking problem. Unfortunately, only 3.8 million will receive help from one (or more) of the various groups or types of treatment available, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
*Also, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, evidence shows that roughly 90% of people with alcoholism relapse within 4 years after completing treatment.
Maria's sketches that predict possible futures, a Volkswagen Microbus painted yellow and black that attracts bees and Terri's grandmother who literally hasn't slept in decades all provide a unique touch of Neil Gaiman or Gabriel Garcia Marquez-type magical realism.
Every volume of Ruined My Rhythm is illustrated by 17-year-old Luna Cooper of Champion Comics.
Luna and her five sisters are all artists, and as co-creator of Ruined My Rhythm, she is stoked out of her mind to be working on this project!
"I've always liked drawing people," Cooper says. "Coming up with different ways to draw the different characters, and making sure there's a big enough variety in the way the characters look is a lot of fun for me."
With your help, we're taking this story worldwide!
Our main character, Maria, discovers that Tulsa, Oklahoma is a very cool place on the map. That's what we want the rest of the world to see, too!
Neil Gaiman said this about Tulsa-
“I saw it as this great, romantic, magical place.”
We're extremely excited to team up with Tulsa, Oklahoma's own Zach Raw.
Zach graciously agreed to work with us on a new cover that will be on any future reprint of Volume One. We enjoyed working with him so much that we hired him for this volume and expect to see his extraordinary artistic Zach Raw genius on the Volume Three cover, as well. We can't wait. For now, though, we'll just marvel every time we see V1 & V2. Zach really captures Tulsa on these covers!

Scenic spots from Tulsa will be seen in the 72-page Volume Two, like the world-famous Boston Avenue Methodist Church, with its revered Art Deco style.

We've got plans for our Kickstarter funds.
We're not asking for a ton of money.
Luna's already been paid for her work from Mr. Soul's own pocket. We're not looking to get paid back.
We're just looking for a little extra help so we can print enough copies to distribute through PREVIEWS, the Diamond Comics catalog, to over 2,000 comic book stores and to the thousands of libraries across the country.
We'll continue to use all our guerrilla marketing tactics we used the first go-around when we push our 72-page Volume Two, but that still takes some money. Kickstarter gets some of it, sure. It costs a little to package and ship the rewards out. Mainly, the money is for printing books.
And if we go over our goal, you bet we will be printing more books!
All 72 pages of RUINED MY RHYTHM, VOLUME TWO are illustrated by LUNA COOPER, a 17-year-old from Springfield, Missouri.

Here are some of our favorite scenes from the 48-page VOLUME ONE!
What happens when the dying wish of your mother is for you to find the father you never knew?
Maria’s pen and ink sketches always seem to cause things to happen.
In case you missed it, here's the promo video for VOLUME ONE:
Award-winning comic book writer and indie film writer/producer Sterling Gates has written stories featuring some of the biggest superheroes in the world, including Superman, Supergirl, Batman, Green Lantern, and the Flash.
He is the co-writer of the New York Times best-selling "Superman: New Krypton Saga" graphic novel series, including SUPERMAN: NEW KRYPTON, SUPERMAN: THE LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON, and SUPERMAN: WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.
Here's a tweet Sterling Gates sent out after reading VOLUME ONE:
And this is what Tulsa World writer, Jimmie Tramel, had to say:
"No matter what form of entertainment -- whether it's a book, television series or movie -- you have to care what happens to the primary character or you're going to get bored and feel disconnected from the story. Robert Soul immediately makes the reader care about Maria in "Ruined My Rhythm." I can't wait to see what happens next." -- Jimmie Tramel, author and pop culture writer, Tulsa World.
When we hit our FIRST STRETCH GOAL of $3,000, all backers will see an additional PDF in their mailbox entitled "A Very Special Charlie Braun Christmas." Just in time for Christmas, in addition to all your other rewards, you'll receive a short story starring Charlie Braun, the hilarious microbus driver from Ruined My Rhythm, Volume One, that Maria meets when she arrives in Tulsa. Charlie, his best friend Ben, and Charlie's Microbus, Yellowjacket, go on an adventure. Along with a cast of other interesting characters, they discover the true meaning of Christmas.
We'll add other STRETCH GOALS as we go!
