About this project
Watch an animatic (moving storyboards) of the first 3 minutes of the film below:
War is Helvetica is a short 3D animated film I would like to make about two different typefaces, Arial and Helvetica, coming alive late one night in a typography studio, printing weapons for themselves, going to war, and battling to the death. It was an idea that I'd never seen done before and would love to make myself.
When I first thought of the idea for making this short, I thought that it would be best shot in live action and then 3D tracked, with the letters animated and composited in 3D in post-production. I have experience in 3D tracking, compositing, shooting, and some 3D modeling but I needed extra help with the animation to really make things look right, so I decided to turn to kickstarter for help. With help from the kickstarter community I should have no trouble at all putting together an amazingly fun and entertaining short film.
All funding will go towards creating the most amazing 3D short animated film about text coming to life and battling that I can possibly make. There will be explosions, ink splattering, and most likely comic sans is going to get blown to bits at some point. I'll be using the funding from this project to hire an additional animator and compositor to help with the workload. I will also be hiring a composer to help score the piece properly, and the rest of the funding will go towards the purchase of equipment to shoot and edit the piece.
Donating also means you can feel good about supporting independent film-making...but honestly, that only goes so far. So, as a reward for your investment I've spent a lot of time designing and producing some very cool stuff to give back. These prints and T-shirts will be limited edition and will only be available through kickstarter. I hope you have as much fun wearing them as I had designing them.
"Helveteran" and "Arial Squad" are both printed on high-quality next-level apparel tri-blend shirts in various styles and colors shown above (as well as printed in grey). I chose the tri-blend shirt as it is incredibly soft and comfortable, but also durable and a great cut. These shirts will be awesome, and if you're at a party wearing one, most people, including myself, will have a hard time not making out with you. That's not a threat, it's a promise.
"Arial Attack on Inky Hill 64" is printed on a well-cut 100 percent cotton next level apparel shirt. It is a discharge print so it's extremely soft after washing and has a high amount of detail. The design has some of the history of Helvetica and Arial hidden in the text as well as a few printing tools and some other Easter eggs that will be fun to find as you wear it. It too has the power to make you ridiculously attractive at parties. Use it wisely. Note: there may be minor tweaks in the design before printing as I am a perfectionist at heart and want to make the best shirt possible for you.
This is an 11x17 limited edition "War is helvetica" poster print. It will be shipped, signed, and numbered as well. If you take it to a party, people might make out with you. I'm just saying, it could happen.
Hey, thank you for viewing my Kickstarter project. Even if you decided to not invest, I just wanted to say thanks for stopping by. Also, If you see a friend or loved one in need of some nerdy design apparel, you know where to point them. Everybody has a birthday, and they hate you when you get them socks. They smile and seem grateful, but really they hate you. So, stock up on cool stuff while you can. Thanks for your help.
1. How will I order the right shirt, color, and size?
When my goal is reached and the kickstarter project is over, I will send out a order form to fill out depending on what level of rewards you chose.
2. How do I know you're not just going to take all the money, go to Vegas, and put it all on red?
Because everyone knows you put it on black....No, no, I kid. I am extremely dedicated to this project. The preparation for it, believe it or not, has taken months, and I'm sticking with it until I can sit back and watch an amazing short film, just like the one I envisioned when this idea was first conceived. Your dollars will go to good use.
3. Did you really write a book called "Hey is that Dan Schreiner? Or just a tree wearing glasses?" I can't find it on amazon.
No, the ideas in it were too dangerous to publish.
4. Why is the due date for the actual production set to March of 2013?
This film is going to be deliciously difficult to produce and at the moment I'm on another video project that will take a lot of my production focus until later in the summer. On top of this, I really want the animation in the film to be smooth and convey a fun story and that may take some time. Finally I want to have a really cool musical score to tie things together which pushes back the date I can deliver this piece. Even in a short film format, a production like this will take time. I want to deliver a quality piece for you guys, not something rushed and hobbled together. Here, have a hug, we're going to get through the wait together. Believe me, I want to see it just as bad as you do. If things clear up or if time allows I will try and push production forward as much as I can without sacrificing quality.
5. Why did you keep saying that people would make out with me if I invested in one of your shirts or posters?
Because it's true. Look at those lovely things.
