About this project

ABOUT THE RV PURSE MUSEUM

Hi. I’m professional freelance writer, columnist, novelist and vintage clothing aficionado Wendy Dager. That good-looking guy over there is Mike, my extremely tolerant husband of thirty years.

We need your help with our project, which we have dubbed the RV—or “Rolling Vintage”—Purse Museum.

The Rolling Vintage Purse Museum will be a unique way to educate and entertain people who are interested in the art and history of vintage handbags. For this project, Mike and I recently purchased a 1961 Aristocrat Land Commander, which is in need of a complete restoration. Mike, a general contractor, and I, not so great with a hammer, but with a good eye for art, will provide the labor.

WITH YOUR HELP

The money we raise from this Kickstarter will go to:

Materials needed to strip, refinish and refurbish walls, floors and furniture of the Land Commander.

Paint and replacement parts for the exterior of the Land Commander.

Interior additions such as Plexigas enclosures, lighting, curtains, signage, printed materials, and other items for the purse exhibits.

Additional cost of insurance for our tow vehicle, a 1966 Ford F-100.

Cost of rewards for this project.

THE BACKSTORY

I’m in the process of receiving my certificate in Art Museum and Gallery Studies from California State University, East Bay. I’m a student member of the American Alliance of Museums, and I’m a member of the Antique Purse Collector’s Society.

I also own vintage purses. Lots and lots of wonderful vintage purses, collected over nearly three decades. So many purses that my husband built a huge room in our house, just for my vintage collection. And for Faith the Mannequin.

Years ago, I began blogging about my now 400-plus purses on my site, Vintage Purse a Day. I then added a second site, The Vintage Purse Gallery, which is a free, online museum showcasing the art and whimsy of vintage handbags, purse accessories and ephemera. It’s been such a success that, as the final project for my certification in Art Museum and Gallery Studies, I decided to create a feasibility study to see if I could open a real, brick-and-mortar vintage purse and fashion museum in Southern California, where I live.

Uh… well… Southern California…

After consulting with business executives and other professionals, I realized it would be way too costly.

If my dream of having a purse museum were to come to fruition, it'd have to be unique. And cheap. Really, really cheap.

Which is why we got the Land Commander, which cost $1,300 and included possessions from the previous owner, most of which were very yucky.

We've already started the process of cleaning it up and tearing it down. (Thank you, inventor of rubber gloves.) We’re now considering several design options, including creating large side doors that swing out to allow complete viewing of the exhibit without stepping inside the RV.

But first, it needs to be stripped, refinished and put back together. After that…

WHERE THE HANDBAG MEETS THE HIGHWAY

If our goal is met, we plan to take the purses on the road to events such as vintage fashion expos, RV “glamping” rallies, and to businesses, museums and residences that will allow us to temporarily park on their lots so visitors can have a unique, entertaining and educational vintage fashion experience. Due to the RV’s space constraints and the enormity of the full collection, the exhibits will be rotated on a regular basis.

The Rolling Vintage Purse Museum will be FREE. That’s right—we are NOT going to charge admission.

If our goal is exceeded, we will use the funds to pay for continued expenses for the RV Purse Museum, as well as update The Vintage Purse Gallery’s website to make it a much more comprehensive, interactive, yet still FREE online experience for visitors the world over.

Risks and challenges

While we're pretty confident that we'll meet our goal of completing the museum by the summer of 2015 using Wendy's vision and Mike's skills, we will be relying on businesses and individuals to allow us to park the RV on their properties to exhibit the purses. We plan to do an extensive social media/marketing campaign to get the word out about the RV Purse Museum in order to secure exhibit locations, but, of course, it all depends on the receptiveness of the individuals we contact.

We will name the RV after you. Seriously. We will paint your first name on the back of it. Or your first name and middle name, if it's suitably awesome. Or your last name, if it’s cooler than your first name. In cursive. With swirls.
