About this project

What if I told you that sharks, the oceans apex predator and important keystone species, have seen a population decline of over 90% in recent years, that ocean acidification is at a level that has been unprecedented for the past 800,000 years, that over 90% of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders of the world, has been devastated by coral bleaching, and that we were at fault?

Few things in this world are more powerful than a great story. Stories are capable of moving one to collapse with laughter, break down in tears, feel inexpressible joy, inspiration, or intense anger. A great story holds the potential to foster connection in a way that part of our own self becomes recognizable in something foreign. The story that I want to tell is one of the oldest in the books. It predates both written word and civilization, and from it humanity was born. I want to tell the story of the sea - and how we got ourselves tangled in this web of destruction.

The mission behind To the Sea is to reunite humanity with the natural world by putting a contemporary spin on planet Earth's oldest, most awe-inspiring story to date - one concerning the massive, blue occupation of space that constitutes most of our planet both in its physical dimensions and biodiversity. It is a thrilling story of both science and adventure, meant to bring the public in for a closer look underneath the waves and encourage understanding of how and why it hosts the most important ecosystems on the planet. The ocean was the original birthing ground for every single organism that inhabits earth today, including our own species, and we are all at the mercy of its processes. It is a world that many see as mysterious and dangerous, but above all, it is a world that demands respect.

I want you to see the ocean the way that I do, in all of its majesty. I want to break down the walls of separation we have built between humanity and the natural world, because it's all connected. We are all connected, and that starts and ends with the oceans. I want to take you back to the sea.

It is my hope that you can find a piece of yourself in this story, and in doing so reconnect with your most timeless roots.

Risks and challenges

Attempting to complete this project as a full-time university student is sure to be a challenge, but it is one that I cannot wait to embrace. I am fortunate enough to attend a university where I have a lot of freedom over the direction of my studies, and thanks to the block program (where students take just one heavily concentrated class at a time in the span of 3.5 weeks), I have the flexibility to defer classes and travel for a month at a time when filming opportunity arises.

This is not meant to be a big budget film. All of the people involved with this project to date are students volunteering their time and skills to make this happen, because we believe this is a message that should be heard for free. We have team members specializing in graphic design, social media management, film editing, and photography just to name a few. More importantly though, we are all incredibly passionate about this message, and intend to see through the creation of To the Sea to the very best of out abilities.
