Cruz the Wave is...
An homage to the great wave. A down-right HUMONGOUS art installation for Burning Man 2014. A 75 ft long, 18 ft high wave, to be surfed, explored and BURNED in what will undoubtedly be an amazing spectacle on Thursday night at Black Rock City!
We've built this beautiful art piece and we're ready to bring it out to the playa but we need your help! What would make this TRULY SPECTACULAR?
Lights, lights and more lights!
We want to build a huge array of lights that will allow the Wave to undulate and glow from across the playa, enticing surfers, beachcombers and explorers to its massive beauty.
We're Giving the Lights Away!
To raise money for the lighting campaign, we're giving away the Lighting Elements after the burn. That means YOU can own a custom-made light kit to light up your home, yard or an art project!
We’re building 12 enormous lights of frosted acrylic, 8 ft long and 4 inches in diameter. Each element has 150 RGB LEDs, a custom built control board to handle processing, wireless communications and power management. The brains of each is a Teensy 3.1 microcontroller and communications is done with XBee.
Elements are completely sealed and only have power connectors on each end. Each will be programmed to cycle through 4-5 20 minute long patterns - a mixture of colors dancing and mellow blues and greens undulating.
We're giving the elements away as perks for far less than it would cost to build them individually. It's a great opportunity to light your own project and own a little bit of Burning Man memorabilia.
Early Birds can pick one up for only $300 - thats about half what it would cost for you to make this yourself. The rest will be gifted for a donation of $425 each - really a screaming great deal for a custom LED elements.
Don't need a light element? How about a carabiner cup? It's a great way to support the Wave project and have an awesome Playa-ready cup to hang on your utility belt.
New Pendant Perks
Hey everyone, a friend of the project just made up these great glass pendants to help us raise funds! Each one is 2" round weighted glass with our logo etched onto the glass with a copper back. We're offering 'em up to you as part of a $50 perk. I don't know about you, but I love me some pendants!
Cruz the Wave started out of the Santa Cruz Burners as a core burn project but has grown to include burner and surf enthusiasts across the Bay Area.
The Lighting Team - Minty Driftwood and Maximus - bring their special talent at building electronics and creating lights for art projects. Maximus has over 15 years as an electronics engineer and maker. Minty's Lightwalker hit the playa in 2013 and was later featured in Buzzfeed.

Risks and challenges
With at least $2,000 we will absolutely be able to produce the lighting for the wave. The more money we raise, the more light tubes we can build and make the wave even more spectacular. Also, with more funding, we'll be able to give away more tubes!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
