About

Connect your smartphone to your guitar without fumbling with awkward clips or suction cups!

The Strumbuddy is a well-designed solution for amateur and professional musicians to easily utilize the many sheet music/guitar tab/lyric apps available.

There are two models of the Strumbuddy, each use the same powerful magnetic system.

The original version, the "Troubadour", attaches to the end of your guitar neck, gently yet firmly, so as to pose no risk of damaging the guitar finish, while securely holding your smartphone at an optimal angle so you can easily see the screen but still interact with your audience.

The "Sing-Along" is meant to be clamped to a standard microphone stand so the you can view the screen easily from either a standing position or seated using a boom mic stand.

Both models were designed by musicians to be very rugged, able to withstand being tossed around in a gig bag, and to look professional, blending in well with your other band equipment.

How it works

The Strumbuddy attaches to the end of your guitar headstock or microphone stand on one end, the other end has a powerful magnet.  There is a thin, smooth piece of metal that you'll place between the back of your smartphone and it's case (not included, any standard case without a clip works great).  The metal piece is not adhered to your phone in any way.  It stays put just fine, and most people leave it in the case all the time.  It won't interfere with or scratch your phone.

With the metal wafer inserted, your phone will now easily stick to the end of the Troubadour or Sing-Along.  The magnetic attraction is of just the right strength so your phone is firmly and safely attached (you can shake the Strumbuddy very aggressively without dislodging the phone), yet you can easily remove it with one hand with a simple twisting motion.  Your smartphone can also be rotated from landscape to portrait orientation with just one finger.

Because both the Troubadour and Sing-Along models use the same metal wafer/magnet system, you can switch back and forth between the two without having to change your case or remove complicated clips.

FAQs

Why Kickstarter?

The Strumbuddy is a great product that has generated a lot of excitement with both professional and aspiring musicians, but we have reached the limit of what we can accomplish with a limited budget and a simple homemade website.  We're hoping that Kickstarter can help us get this product off the ground and get the attention of a much wider market.

The funds raised on Kickstarter will be used for advertising and marketing, including a new website design, and to help improve our efficiency and lower the manufacturing costs of this hand-crafted product.  The Strumbuddy is made with the most durable, high-quality materials available, and we need to raise more capital to be able to order our raw materials in bulk.

We also will be using the Kickstarter profits to fund our upcoming booth at the National Association of Music Merchants trade show.  At this event we hope to meet and capture the interest of buyers in the music retail industry.

How did you come up with the design?

I got tired of balancing my iPhone on my knee while playing guitar around the campfire with my buddies.  I wanted a way I could see and manipulate the phone apps without having to put the guitar down.  There were a couple other products out there, and I tried them both.  One used a suction cup to attach a holder to the body of the guitar, potentially damaging the finish and/or affecting the resonance.  The integrity of the suction soon failed, and my phone tumbled to the ground.  Another product required two free hands to firmly clip and unclip the phone, an awkward task at best that that frequently leaves you lunging for the falling guitar. It also held the phone at an uncomfortable angle, making it difficult to read your tabs/lyrics and interact with your audience at the same time.

In a fit of "if you want something done right", I developed the Strumbuddy!

Will the Strumbudy work with my smartphone / my guitar?

The Strumbuddy will work with any smartphone that has a case, such as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs, iPod Touch, Droid X and others. The Strumbuddy Troubadour will fit any flat guitar headstock up to 3/4" thick. The clamp needs about a 3/4" clear area to clamp on to. The Strumbuddy Sing-along will fit any mic stand with a 5/8" diameter pipe, which is the standard size for mic stands.

Will the Troubadour damage my guitar?

No. The Strumbuddy Troubadour clamp has a large surface area and uses rubber pads to protect the finish of your guitar. Very little clamping force is needed. The clamp can open to 3/4". Your guitar headstock is probably 1/2" or 5/8". The clamp is NOT spring-loaded, and therefore makes for a very stable attachment.

Will the Sing-Along damage my microphone stand?

The Strumbuddy Sing-Along uses a 1/4-20 thumbscrew to hold the clamp securely to any standard size mic-stand. Very little pressure is needed. This method of clamping is used by many other microphone stand accessories and performs in a similar fashion. In other words, if you torque the thumbscrew up to eleven then yes, you will scratch the finish of your mic-stand with the end of the thumbscrew. Don't do that. Tighten it just enough to hold position on your mic stand and you'll be fine, just like any other mic stand accessory.

Will the Sing-Along fit my microphone stand?

Almost all microphone stands out there have a 5/8" diameter adjustable riser bar (the part above the adjusting nut). If the mic stand is a "boom" type mic stand, then the boom itself is 5/8" diameter, as well as the riser. The Sing-Along is made to fit this standard size mic stand pipe diameter.

Will the Strumbuddy Troubadour affect the tone of my guitar?

In our opinion, it will improve the resonance of the guitar. Many people have described the effect as making a $300 guitar sound like a $1000 guitar. The tone of an instrument is a subjective thing, but we can hear an improvement, especially with acoustic guitars.

How does the Strumbuddy hold the smartphone?

With a magnet, but not directly. A thin peice of steel (included) is inserted between your smartphone and it's case. The steel plate is not glued or taped to the phone or the case. It's simply held in place by the case itself. You then allow the magnet on the end of the Troubadour or Sing-Along to attract the metal plate, tightly sandwiching the case between the steel plate and the magnet. The plate is unobtrusive and can be left in place if desired.

How strong is the magnet?

Very strong. The magnet is a 1" diameter x .25" thick neodymium magnet. It is powerful enough to hold the phone steady even while being shaken.

Will the magnet harm my smartphone?

No. The magnet will not harm your smartphone.

Really?

Yes, really. Smartphones are not harmed by magnetic fields. Almost all of the magnetic energy is stopped by the steel plate, but even without a steel plate your photos and MP3's are safe.

Will the magnet affect my smartphone?

Some smartphones use a magnetic sensor to determine if the smartphone is in a belt holster or mounted in a cradle/dock. The Strumbuddy magnet will activate this smartphone feature if it is not disabled.

What about my apps?

Any app that relies on a magnetic field to operate, such as a compass or GPS, will be affected while the smartphone is attached to the Strumbuddy. We're reasonably sure you won't be using your GPS app while playing your guitar.

What about airports?

No problems have been reported with either checked baggage or carry-ons. Take care to cover the magnet with the steel plate as it will attract anything metal in your bag if not covered.

Why isn't the smartphone case included?

It would be difficult for me to keep up with the ever-changing variety of smartphones. I personally use a very simple (and cheap - less than $5) case on my iPhone 4s that is part hard plastic and part gel case. Email me if you'd like the source.  One nice thing about the Strumbuddy design is it'll work just as well with smartphone models ten years from now as it does with today's.

But what if I don't want to use a case?

So, you're super-confidant you'll never drop or scratch that pretty little iPhone are ya? Well, if that's what you really want to do... Never let it be said that I stand in the way of personal freedom! Each strumbuddy comes with an adhesive disc. Although I'd really prefer that you use a case, you may use the disk to directly attach the metal plate to the back of your phone. Use at your own risk.

Why isn't the smartphone included?

Now you're just being difficult.
