About

A lot of "Rock Docs" that I've seen are like Greek Tragedies. You know what is going to happen before the opening credits.  Either someone is going to die an unexpected death, or else the band, (or artist), is going to be tragically denied their rightful place in the Pantheon of Rock and Roll.  Bummer, Man.

Well, this is definitely NOT that movie.

In June of 1967, a group of six 17-year-old boys, seniors at Phillips Academy at Andover, (an all-boys Prep School), went into a tiny recording studio in Cambridge Massachusetts and laid down tracks for an album that was to become a Vinyl collector's classic. They have since become one of the "Unknown Legends of Rock n Roll."

The band was the Rising Storm. The album was called Calm Before...

The boys graduated and went on with their separate lives and successful careers that had nothing to do with music. The 500 copies of Calm Before..., never meant for distribution, fell into obscurity, until 1982, when a German collector paid $2,000 for a rare copy of the original album.

Music reviewers and historians immediately discovered and wrote about Calm Before... as a phenomenon, dubbing the album an "icon of the garage band sound with surprising original material". The album was "bootlegged" in Europe and suddenly the band was unwittingly thrust back into the spotlight.

  • Boston Globe Article, January 2018, "The cult band that emerged from a ‘garage’ called Phillips Academy"  https://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/music/2018/01/09/the-cult-band-that-emerged-from-garage-called-phillips-andover/AKUHk510ajmt6C7rzpJRyL/story.html

It got crazy. The Rising Storm played reunion concerts, went on tour, recorded again, and had a fictionalized book written about them. The rights to their story were optioned by Warner Brothers. To the surprise of the band members, a cult following had sprung up around them. But what is the real story?

Through interviews with experts, fans, and the band members we define the garage band sound that the Rising Storm epitomizes and we piece together the band's unlikely rise to fame. We explain what caused the craze among Vinyl collectors. We hear what the band has to say about the music they created, the times they lived in, their subsequent “fame” and their real lives. We return to 1967, with the Stormers, and attempt to recapture the magic in the music that went into Calm Before.

  • We traveled to to Massachusetts to film the band members on location at Andover and at their private rehearsal studio in beautiful Kitterey Point Maine.
  • We interviewed Storm fans and Vinyl collectors from all over the world.
  • SUNDAZED Records, of Nashville Tennessee, has recently released the re-mastered album on Vinyl, so that it is now available to collectors, once again. We traveled to Nashville to witness the process.

The value of the original Vinyl album has soared. An original copy, in excellent condition will sell on EBay for around $6,000. Even the bootleg copies are hot items.

  • Shindig! Magazine Article, February 2018,  "Henry, Is That You?"  https://risingstormblog.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/shindig-2018.pdf

In June of 2017, the band reunited once again to play at their 50th reunion at Andover. They are all still alive and rockin', still friends, and still amazed at their notoriety.  They are lawyers, professors, one's a writer, another is a doctor, and Charlie is a retired U.S. Army Colonel. They all have their lives and commitments, their jobs and families, but they remember.

  • New York Times Article, July 2017 "A Cult Following? My Dad’s Garage-Rock Band Nailed" https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/13/arts/music/rising-storm-calm-before.html

The movie is 30 minutes long. There is no existing footage of the band from those early days, so the movie is filled with animations, re-creations, archival photos, dialogs that tell the story, and featuring the glorious re-mastered music of the original album provided by Sundazed Records.

We are in the final stages of this project. The movie will soon be showing at a Film Festival near you. We expect to be there by Summer/Fall of 2018. The project has been entirely self-funded but we are seeking assistance in this final stage in order to purchase the rights to use all of the music in the movie.

The experience of discovering the Rising Storm’s 1967 creation:         Calm Before... is akin to uncovering buried treasure. You listen to the music and admire it, share it with friends, covet it for its rarity, know that it is special, and, somehow, you begin to understand that the sound you are hearing cannot be duplicated. It is the sound of youth with a splash of genius played out in a particular time and place. The Rising Storm is the Band from Neverland. We may all wish we had been there. We may even wish that we had been them. Our High School days may be long gone but this story suggests that perhaps we can go back and relive those times. Just listen to the music.

Risks and challenges

After three years of working late nights, days off, and on an entirely self funded basis, the movie is complete. We're excited to tackle the next stage of distribution and submission to film festivals, and see where all our hard work takes us!
