The Vision -With the generous help of the Iowa Arts Council, Iowa’s own Parranderos Latin Combo (PLC) will create their first studio album with Grammy Award winning producer Ramon Martinez this November in Puerto Rico. The first collaboration of its kind, the album will include 10 original songs, ranging from cumbia to salsa to merengue, and feature Iowa-based musicians hailing from Ecuador, Peru and Puerto Rico . Born in Iowa, and reared through a strong Latin influence, the recording will not be the only product to emerge from the project. PLC’s time spent in Puerto Rico promises to plant a seed of new alliances, place Iowa on the Latin music map, and spur a richer cultural fabric for our state. The scope and details of this ambitious project are detailed in the following slides. And while the details are in place, full funding is not. We invite you to join the cause.
The Trip - PLC will spend 50 hours at Play Bach Studios in San Juan to record with Ramon Martinez, a Grammy Award winning producer - and Carlos Velazquez, a Grammy award winning engineer. PLC’s original compositions include many Latin styles including salsa, cumbia, vallenato, guajira, timba, samba, and more. The album will be shared with a diverse population of Iowans – some who already love Latin music and others soon to be inspired by the new collaboration. With additional funding, these songs will be shared with Iowans through educational clinics and professional performances here at home.
The Funding - The Iowa Arts Council awarded PLC with a grant to compensate the 12 musicians for their 50 hour work week while in Puerto Rico. While this grant is generous, it does not cover the budget required for the full costs of the project. With Kickstarter, PLC intends to raise funds to help cover the cost of production, distribution and publicity associated with PLC's first original recording.
Risks and challenges
It's funny to think that funding is the biggest challenge to making a recording. I hope the 50 hours spent with Ramon Martinez and Carlos Velazquez will be the biggest challenge of all but paying for the project is daunting. The members PLC have already requested days off from work and the songs are extremely close to being ready for input and recording. Booking flights, transportation, and lodging will be a task but not a challenge. Funding is the challenge. Please consider a donation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
