*** HALF-WAY BONANZA REWARD UPDATE! ***
To help get the project funded and get those owls out there, I will be giving everyone that pledges above the $25 level a Pendant Owl, as an additional reward! This includes everyone of you that has already backed- you get upgraded! Because people have already pledged, I cannot change the reward settings there on the left, but I will be posting this in the updates section for all to see!
About this project
My name is Grant Miller, and I make toys, statues, and animations when I’m not at my customer service job. I believe 3D printing will soon be impacting our lives much more than any of us have imagined: providing on-demand items quickly, somewhere between “Next Day Air” shipping and a StarTrek replicator! I want to help this process along and be a part of it. This is why I chose this medium to express my newest ideas.
I’ve been drawing comics and cartoons all my life. In 1997 I went to school to learn 3D modeling and animation, around that time my wife and I started our family so I went to work full time during the day selling auto parts and went to school at night. I consider myself talented, but breaking into the animation industry is no easy feat, and while I’ve had a lot of freelance jobs, I could never afford to intern at a studio and support the family. So as the years went on I did different things in the field of art on a freelance basis- airbrushed helmets, tanks, and other miscellaneous items, drew and painted commissioned pieces, learned to do tattoos, and most recently I started a couple of websites based on my art: figurebang.com and thickstyle.com.
Of all the 3D models I’ve sculpted, this is one of my favorites and I want it to act as a portfolio piece of sorts and hopefully get noticed by an established studio or toy company where I could work making concept designs, prototypes, or finished art for a living.
Why the Owl- The Story of the Stelliform (star-shape) Owl
My daughter and I love owls, and when I decided to make this sculpt I had a few ideas in mind. I knew I wanted it to be hollow and have a particular pattern of cut out shapes that would allow light to shine through from an electric tea light. The first issue I had was- what kind of owl? After sketching several iterations, I decided the Screech Owl was my go to raptor. The next challenge was the pose- should it be funny & cute, or sinister and menacing? Again, after many sketches I found I liked the rather simple & stoic version you see here the best. This “stelliform” owl is made to be like a night time sentinel that could be given to illuminate the dark. The heart shape breast represents love, the swirls represent the flow and mysteries of our lives, and the stars are what we are all made from. The owls themselves represent wisdom and knowledge- very cool!
I felt doing a Kickstarter project would be the best way to raise the money needed to produce this 3D printed sculpture and get it out into the world. I really like how the Kickstarter art community comes together to help each other out, I believe in this interdependent and collective based form of fund raising.
