About this project
The traditional British sausage is in danger of extinction. The High Street is in decline. Help me save both! I want to visit your butchers and share sausages with you on the High Street!
I am embarking on a two wheeled crusade to save the sausage and get people back on the High Street. The not-so-humble British sausage is, possibly, the ultimate ambassador for local food and the High Street. Celebrating diversity and innovation across the UK. Now I'm on a mission to spread the word about some of the amazing sausages we have in the UK.
My book, The Sausage King Adventures, which will be available as a download and hard copy, will cover some of my travels around the UK in search of the ultimate British sausage. I'll blog, tweet, film and appear in the press on my way round but the book will be a lasting legacy to show just how amazing the sausages are in the UK.
We are a nation of sausage lovers. Around 5 million people tuck into around 12 million sausages every day! But now the sausage lover can be the catalyst for High Street transformation. Local food can revitalise towns and communities.
My book, which will be available at the end of next summer, will track my journey from Zero to Hero in the World of sausages. It will show how a website started as a joke changed my life and set me on a journey of discovery. Inspired by The Long Way Down I will feature sausage makers I visited on a variety of motorbikes.
With your pledges and suggestions I will pick out destinations and continue my journey searching for meaty perfection. If there is enough sausage love lets do something on your local High Street?!
Then I will share the information, secrets and all, for all to read about and enjoy.
The funding will go towards a variety of things including:
- Editing, photograph and printing services for the book
- Distribution for the book
- Equipment for some more adventures (so I can keep discovering and sharing new sausage makers)
- Logistical support
- PR services to ensure every adventure has the most benefit possible and the High Street gets a boost!
Any shortfall I will make up myself. The intention here is to maximise the benefit to the High Street and to sausage makers.
I'm aware that, despite experience writing for magazines, newspapers and on a variety of blogs that writing a book will be a different experience so I'm aware I might need to get professional support at some points.
I'm also planning out carefully how I can write the book efficiently, as I go about my travels, and then distribute it effectively to ensure that both electronic and hard copies are of the highest quality. Over the years I've written lots of articles for various blogs and the key disciplines employed with that will be helpful.
The plan will be to have the book more or less finished by around the end of April next year. This will allow time for it to be professionally edited and worked on if necessary before being printed. The book will look great on your coffee table but the iPad version will have the advantage of being really interactive so you can get closer to the journey.
This book will take research and careful planning. My adventures will take me to the corners of the UK sampling sausages, meeting sausage makers and finding out why we, as a Nation, love sausages so much.
Eventually the plan is the make a TV series but first I want to produce the ultimate guide to sausages in the UK. Some students at the school I teach at made a video which is their take on my Sausage King Adventures:
Being The Sausage King is a big responsibility and my adventures have two broad objectives:
1) Promote British Pork - Our welfare standards are some of the highest in the World and our farmers deserve our support and that you demand British. The animals are happier and the flavour is amazing.
2) Raise the profile of quality sausage makers - I want to promote our amazing sausage makers and do my bit to get people back on the High Street.

Risks and challenges
My early Sausage King Adventures gave me a unique insight into the challenges of organising such journeys. I got the chance to really work out what kit I needed to photograph and record my travels. They also gave me chance to build up some useful press contacts and, of course, connect with a wider network of sausage lovers around the UK.
I've learnt from these pilot visits and I am now able to streamline my adventures to ensure I am maximising the benefit for the butchers, sausage makers and sausage loving public! The book will be the lasting legacy that helps support sausage makers and encourage people back onto the High Street.
Writing a whole(!) book myself will be a challenge both in terms of logistics and time. I have a few things in my favour here;
- I already write quite a lot for a variety of audiences (blog, newspaper, professional journals etc)
- The book will cover some previous adventures as well as future ones (so I can get started sooner rather then later)
- I can release some interactive chapters via iBooks as I go along (feedback from potential readers will be a great help)
With feedback and professional support I can ensure I craft a high quality and desirable end product.
The other two challenges come down to discipline! I don't underestimate the time involved in making my Sausage King Adventures appear as tasty and exciting on paper as they are when I'm out on the road. By writing electronically, little and often I can ensure I have lots of content for the professionals, if necessary, to work with.
The logistics is something I also learnt a lot about on my initial pilot adventures, I'm pretty confident that I know what I'm looking for this time in terms of shots, audio snippets and short films.
There is also the logistics of getting the book out to people when I've had it printed. I have a strong idea what this will cost but I'm also lucky to know a great number of awesome butchers and sausage makers around the country who I can call on for distribution and sales help if needed.
The printing has to be quality just like the sausages and sausage makers I will be writing about. This may be a job for the professionals! Getting this right, with the above will mean it's the book no coffee table should be without!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
