About this project
Railways of Nippon (occasionally abbreviated as RON) is a 2 to 4 player version of Railways of the World (ROTW) and includes a new map of Japan designed by the superstar Japanese game designer Hisashi Hayashi. We have put this "base-game-equivalent for up to 4 players" edition together to invite new players to dive into the Railways of the World (ROTW) series at a great price. Improvements include:
- A lower MSRP due to the reduction in size to 2-4 players
- A much smaller and much sturdier box, sized for easier storage
- New player colors that do not overlap the supply and demand colors of the cubes and the cities
- A new ECM -- the "timer" of the ROTW series of games
- Water drops on the maps to indicate water hexes and avoid confusion
- Four scoring track disks (in player colors)
- Optional Components (for sale separately) such as different-colored engines; hotels, mines, fuel depots; and switch tracks.
Please take a look at these new features in the pictures below.
Since its publication as Railroad Tycoon in 2005, Railways of the World (re-named for title licensing reasons in 2009) has been constantly ranked in the Top 60 of the all-time best games on BoardGameGeek.com. Eleven years and 9200+ ratings since then, it has been ranked as high as #22 and it is currently #54 (in Strategy Games)--even after all these years. Revisit the early days of the Age of Steam as you begin with no money, a locomotive (the venerable John Bull, the first locomotive to run in North America) and a vision (your Baron's "mission" card). From there, build your budding railroad network into a vast empire. If you are playing the Eastern US map, you can connect New York to Chicago, earn the most money, develop bigger and faster locomotives and maybe even combine expansions and span North America to build the Transcontinental Railway! Multiple expansions featuring different maps are available.
Railways of the World is the base game for the system and includes all the components necessary to play with up to 6 players, including: the engine placards, track tiles, train tokens, money, bonds, and other items that are needed to play almost all the Railways of the World series. A game board depicting the Eastern half of the United States is included in the base game, as well as the expansion map, Railways of Mexico (for 2-3 players).
In two words -- The EXPANSIONS!
NEW MAPS have been redrawn so that all colors of the "demand" cities are clearly coordinated to match the colors of the "supply" cubes. These newly-drawn maps include: Railways of the Eastern US; Railways of Mexico; Railways of Europe; Railways of Great Britain; and Railways of North America.
BUT wait! There's more....
We have spent a lot of time reorganizing, compiling and then re-writing the NEW Rule Book Compendium for ROTW. It now contains the complete Basic Rules which pertain to all the ROTW games and expansions; as well as pages on each of the expansions, related games and accessories too! In this Compendium, we have attempted to address accumulated errata on the cards and rules printings in the past editions, prior FAQs and pictures in the ROTW universe. When completed, this Compendium will be available for free download on our website (EagleGames.net) and likely on BoardGameGeek.com as well.
Redrawing the maps has included using better fonts and better colors; labeling major routes; eliminating redundancy; and in an overall way making the expansion maps consistent with each other.
Water drops are drawn onto water spaces to eliminate any questions or confusion about which spaces are more expensive to build on because they contain water.
Accessories (the prior mini-expansions) are now available (for sale separately) in the new player colors as well as the old ones.
Scoring Disks (in player colors) replace using engines on the score track. These disks stack up to avoid congestion on the same spaces on the score track.
Within 30 days of when Railways of Nippon is released in September, all of the re-drawn prior expansions, and the new accessories, should be in stock at EagleGames.net and elsewhere in retail stores.
- A Score Track/Income Board of approx. 8" by 12" with linen matte finish

As mentioned above, we have undertaken the task of re-writing and consolidating the rules to the basic game of Railways of the World, and adding a page about each of the expansions to ROTW, as well as other historical information. This was quite a task and it is not quite done as of the January 17, 2017 date of our Kickstarter Launch. We will continue to work on this (largely done) draft during the early days of this KS project. It will be finished well before the close of this Kickstarter on February 14, 2017. We want you to see what and how we are doing, so we have linked you below to this work-in-progress. Please do keep in mind that it is not quite final yet, but will be soon.
In one of the very best BGG reviews ever written by Ender's Game, the Dean of Game Reviewers on BGG, Ender calls ROTW the "quintessential train game for the typical modern board gamer". Find more here.

In order to increase the likelihood of achieving Stretch Goals, you may pledge for these Add-Ons now. You may also wait until the Pledge Manager Survey comes to you just after this KS projects ends, and pledge for these add-ons at that time! Actual shipping expense will be added to your pledge for these add-ons after the KS project has ended. If you have questions about Shipping, please send us a Message and NOT a Comment please. Messages are logged in by Backer and they are permanently kept, whereas Comments are much more difficult to find and keep track of.
Add-Ons have been the source of a lot of confusion and some "issues" in the past. It is very difficult and expensive for us to coordinate and pay for shipping and stocking goods in four or more locations around the world. As a result, we are offering these Add-Ons only to US and Canadian Backers for certain.
There will be an additional cost for shipping Add-Ons (matching our costs for shipping, we do not make a profit on shipping!) and you will be advised of those extra shipping costs after you have filled out and returned the survey and worksheet. If the shipping costs prove unacceptable to you, you may cancel your order and you will not be charged anything for Add-ons. If the shipping charges are acceptable, you will pay for the Add-ons via PayPal or wire payment.
For backers in the EU, Australia, Asia and South America, we will provide these Add-Ons on a first come, first served basis. If we do not have the stock needed, we will offer you a FULL refund.
We are pleased to announce that HappyShops will be our partner for the Railways of Nippon game in Germany/Austria/Switzerland. Backers from each of these countries should place their orders with HappyShops and save on shipping expenses. You will need to contact them for payment arrangements and to calculate shipping. You will need to order your games from them during the same period of time that we are running this Kickstarter (January 17 through February 13) in order to be treated just as if you were backing this project via KS. If you do, you will receive (through these partners) the same Stretch Goals you would have gotten through us if you had backed this KS.
We really appreciate the services provided by our fulfillment partners that send out your KS-ordered games to you in the following countries. Note that you should NOT place KS orders with them (except for HappyShops for Germany, Austria and Switzerland only please), but instead order your games through this Kickstarter and we will ship your order to them and they will get it shipped to you. Thanks for your cooperation on this.

Risks and challenges
Eagle-Gryphon Games stands by our products. If there are issues with your game, please contact our customer service department within 30 days of receiving your copy of the game that you have pledged for. We will take every step necessary to get you exactly what you purchased. Contact: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Shipping issues are relatively uncommon, but they do sometimes occur, especially when shipping to destinations outside of the US. We will send you tracking information when it is possible, but sometimes it is not. We cannot guarantee that there will not be local shipping problems, as we cannot guarantee the service and reliability of the various postal/delivery services involved around the world. You will have to assume that risk along with us.
We double check all of your games for damage before packing them up to send to you. However there is a small chance that your games may get damaged during shipping by the carrier. Please keep in mind that we did not cause that damage, nor are we responsible for it. If your package is damaged then your first recourse should be to recover your losses from the carrier, not us. If you are still struggling to find a solution through your carrier then we can try to assist you.
We will always do our best through Kickstarter updates to keep you as informed as possible to the status of your game(s). However, in this business there are a number of uncertain and ever changing factors that are beyond our control, such as: holidays, customs, quality control, inspection delays, inclement weather and dock strikes - to name a few. As you can imagine we have little to no control over such factors, but if anything is to occur we assure you that you will be the first to know.
To put it simply, you will get everything you are promised when you pledge to one of our Kickstarter Projects, and it will be delivered to you in as timely a manner as possible.
Shipping can be problematic and expensive. We ask that you are patient and tolerant and share the burden with us of making sure that shipping is as positive an experience as it can be. But be aware of what is involved please.
We ship your game(s) to you via various fulfillment partners located around the world. We do this in an effort to keep expenses as low possible, and hope that you will see this change reflected in the shipping costs for this project.
Shipping is far more comprehensive than many people realize. Not only does “shipping” include the postage cost, it also includes: getting the container shipped to the US, or the EU, or Australia; in some cases, the Customs and VAT (which we are not generally responsible for payment of) and other import fees and taxes; the drayage from the port to the warehouse; the warehouse fees to unload and sort out and prepare packages; the materials and labor involved in the last item; fees to the warehouse for their service to us. Only after all of that do we consider the postage! We need to cover all of those costs--and they really add up. Frequently they cost as much or more than the game(s) did to produce.
When we combine a low margin price (such as the one we offer on all of our KS projects) with this shipping expense, we do not make any profit if we are not very careful. We hope that the shipping we are charging for this project is as low as we can make it and still stay in business. We ask that you understand this, and when we occasionally make mistakes in quoting shipping expenses, please be tolerant. We will give you a refund if we must make shipping fee changes and they are not acceptable to you.
We also reserve the right to combine the shipping of any and all pledges for multiple KS projects if the projects and the shipping are run close to the same time and if we can ship them all within a reasonable time (30 days) of us receiving them. Of course, we will advise you ASAP if it looks like we will be holding up shipping for this reason and you will always have the right to pay additional fees to get expedited delivery on individual orders/pledges.
Internationally, for unusual shipping destinations or multiple games, get in touch with us and tell us the total of how many games you want; which ones; and where you would like them shipped.
To get in touch with us, please send us a Message (not a Comment) using the "Contact Me" button at the top of the KS project. Or email us at: email@example.com
We will not ship to Russia, the Ukraine and select places in Asia and the rest of the world, except for specially-made arrangements wherein the Backer takes the risk involved in receiving the package. For Brazil, we will not take responsibility for paying Customs, as they seem to be erratic and unpredictable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
