About this project
What are Furries?
The “Furry Fandom” is the growing subculture whose participants ("furries") share an appreciation for "anthropomorphic" (humanlike) animal characters in fiction. The cast of Looney Tunes, various Disney characters, the Redwall book series, the Starfox video games, and even mascots on cereal boxes are examples of anthropomorphic characters in the world around us.
Most furries create an original character to represent themselves as a personal avatar, and they use this “fursona” to interact with others. The level of participation varies from person to person, but common aspects include: costuming, drawing, puppeteering, animation, role-playing, and attending conventions.
FURRIES is a film that follows a group of individuals, exploring their lives both within—and outside of—the furry community. From artists to costumers, from furry newcomers to furry parents, this film looks beyond the fur to explore the essence of the fandom: its people. Placing a particular emphasis on identity development, the importance of creativity, and the impact of a strong community, FURRIES offers a humanizing perspective into an often misunderstood fandom in what ultimately strives to be the definitive documentary on the furry world.
Hello. My name is Eric, and I'm the director of FURRIES.
I first discovered furries in 2007. The fandom dazzled me with its artistic ability, and humbled me with it's acceptance and diversity. I was exposed to a supportive group of people, many whom went on to become my best friends.
For the past four years I've been working on this film. It's my artistic contribution to a community that has done so much for me. I see this film as educational tool...an introduction for furries and non-furries alike. I've seen far too many TV shows and news articles using furries as the butt of a joke; a group of people to point and laugh at because they're different. I've worked hard to make this documentary genuine—not defensive. This film gives us a voice to tell our story from the inside out.
I'm proud of this film. And I think you will be too.
The filming is DONE! The editing is ALMOST DONE! All that remains is get the film through post production so it can look and sound as good as it possibly can! And then we can get it out to YOU!
We are proud to announce our collaboration with the band Lab Partners, who have joined the project to compose an original soundtrack.

Risks and challenges
Getting FURRIES out into the world is major personal goal. As I move forward with post-production, I have a clear vision of the finish line. But as with any independent film, challenges and obstacles could arise. If life throws a major, unforeseen event my way, I may have to take some time away from the film. This would delay the process, but not halt it. The film WILL be completed.
In July of this year, I will be moving from Dayton, Ohio to the San Francisco Bay Area. This could present a problem if I am still working on the film, but I'm choosing to use this as incentive to finish the film beforehand. Completing the film would literally and symbolically be the close of one chapter of my life as a filmmaker, and my life in California would be the start of another.
Should the film be delayed for any reason, it will be clearly explained in all of our social media. I will make sure our supporters have up-to-date information on the status of the film leading up to its release and beyond.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
