I am thrilled to present MiniZip - the adapter that lets you run your Lego® creations off of a tiny 9 volt battery. Now your creations can be smaller and lighter than ever!
What exactly is MiniZip?
MiniZip is a cable that adapts a 9 volt battery to Lego Power Functions®. No need to build your model around a bulky battery box - just leave a small nook to fit the battery into. Not only is MiniZip small, but it is also very light. A Lego Power Functions® battery box (with batteries) weighs 209 grams. But the weight of the MiniZip cable and a 9 volt battery is just 37 grams. That's over 5x lighter!
The cable is just under 9 inches long and has a 9 volt battery snap connector on one end and a Lego Power Functions® plug on the other. It is moderately weatherproof but should not be used in overly wet conditions.
In order to provide a reasonable price, the components must be bought in bulk. This takes a large investment, which cannot be done without your help. By supporting this project, you can make MiniZip a reality! If the Kickstarter is successful, I will sell the MiniZip online for those who want one but did not purchase one through Kickstarter.
Because using batteries once and throwing them away is expensive (and bad for the environment!), several of the pledge options include rechargeable 9 volt batteries and a charger at bulk price - cheaper than if you were to buy them yourself! This way you can create all day without having to buy new batteries.
Please note that the charger is a trickle charger and not a 'smart charger'. See manual for charging times.
(UPDATE) Stretch Goal!!!
You guys are so awesome! And because of your super-awesomeness, MiniZip is going to get even more awesome! If the project hits $2500, some cool features will be added:
Velcro Dots! Every order will come with adhesive-backed velcro dots to secure the 9 volt battery to your creation.
Every backer will also receive a PDF file chock-full of pictures, information, and step by step instructions on how to build different Lego mounting brackets for your 9 volt battery (and how to use the velcro dots).
I offer free shipping on all pledges within the US. If you are outside of the US, a small shipping fee will be added (see pledges for more information).
When Will I Receive My MiniZip?
Once the campaign is successful I plan to begin manufacturing the MiniZip immediately. Depending on the number of orders and availability of parts, this could take more or less time than expected. Therefore, I will set a tentative date of November 2014 for when you can expect to receive your MiniZip.
Please note that Lego® is a trademark of The Lego Group who is not connected in any way to myself or this project and does not endorse or sponsor myself or this project in any way or form.
Risks and challenges
Every MiniZip will be carefully manufactured and tested. This takes time, so in the event of a very large number of orders production could take longer than expected.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
