Hello, I'm Mickey, the artist and writer of 1 More Hero, a comic book adaptation of my Grandfather Stanley Stawinski's memoirs from World War II.
Thank you so much to all the people who have shown their appreciation and support for this project!
It's been a long road and I have learned so much.
When Stanley wrote his memoir, 'My True Life Story', it was the first time he'd discussed the war in nearly 45 years. The story has never been published and I am incredibly proud to be able to retell it.
Stanley begins with his first term of service in the U.S. Army, where we see a rare glimpse of the US military before World War II. He talks about the time he spent visiting the dance halls of New York City, with my grandmother Evelyn, and, his eventual reenlistment after Pearl Harbor. His journey to Europe on the Queen Mary and his time in the U.K before shipping out to his first of three invasions.
His notes on the army before the War, during his first enlistment.
Stanley went on to talk about his time the Fighting 1st Infantry. Also called The Bloody 1st and The Big Red One. He writes at length about his time in Algeria, Tunisia and of course Normandy, where he earned a Bronze Star for heroic achievement.
However, what makes this story even more special to me are his reflections on what happened between the battles. It is a rare piece of the puzzle and one we don't get to see much of in the War movies of today, which are mostly about... explosions.
Stanley's light hearted, almost comedic tone was always so incredibly refreshing to me and plays a big part of how I create the dialogue for the characters in the book (no, its not just an illustrated history book). Which also gave me the idea for some fun and creative introductions to each new issue. Which I will share here as our campaign continues.
My goal for this campaign is to fund the future of this project. Eventually, I would like to create four books, the first, talking about Stanley's time in the Army before the war and how things changed leading up to his first D-Day. The second, about his time in fighting in Africa and Sicily. The last two books sequentially illustrating his incredible remembering of the most famous D-Day in history, the invasion of Normandy.
Thank you again for your time and support. I can't wait to show you more!
