At Wakulimarket we want to change the coffee industry, by serving you the best coffee in the most direct way possible. By doing this we improve the lives of the farmers producing this coffee.

When you buy your coffee through Wakulimarket, you buy it directly from the farmers who produced it. This increases their income and contributes to a more sustainable and green future.

The coffee from the MVIWAMBI cooperative is an AA, cupping score of 80 - 85 (last year was 83). The taste profile is nutty, chocolate aroma, vanilla, creamy, smooth clean finish with a properly balanced acidity.

In each cherry on the coffee tree, two beans are grown side by side giving a flat face on the majority of the beans. However, peaberries have only one of the two seeds fertilized and it grows on its own without anything to flatten it.

They are individuals, the lone guns of the coffee world. Due to their independence, many coffee connoisseurs have suggested that each peaberry would be infused with all the assets normally reserved for two beans.

In our humble opinion, these beans are most certainly unique, punctuated by an intoxicating, chocolaty aroma. The subtle oat undertone and rich, winey body are surprisingly versatile and perfect for any time and place of the day.

We work with farmers from both Tanzania and Ethiopia. Afterward, we ship the coffee to the Netherlands to roast it there. Lastly, we distribute it all over the Europe and USA!

Price

Depending on the amount of coffee: we give farmers a 30-50% higher prices than the current auction. Besides a higher price, we are also establishing a long-term relationship with the MVIWAMBI farming cooperative.

This is in contrast with the Fair Trade price ($3,53 FOB of which $0,44 is the Fair Trade premium) that is calculated FOB (meaning in the trade port) and with a premium that has to be spent on certain activities.

Invest in a green future

We want to help the farmers of MVIWAMBI to produce their coffee organically. For that reason, we enable you to co-invest in organic fertilizer facilities (serving 30 farmers each).

On top of that, we enable you to plant new trees through the Kilimanjaro project. Coffee needs to grow in the shadow of trees, so it's very important! The Kilimanjaro Project has partnered with TreeTracker.org (a tree tracking app) to help them photograph and geo-tag their trees - creating sustainability and transparency to the tree planting initiative.

What is the MVIWAMBI cooperative?

MVIWAMBI “Mtandao wa vikundi vya wakulima Mbinga” (the network of farmer groups of Mbinga in English) is a smallholder coffee farmer cooperative that has been active since 2000. MVIWAMBI is a farmers organization consisting of over 2050 (800 women) members in 57 farmer groups and 50 villages. All farmers are smallholder farmers with no more than 1-2 acres of land.

The cooperative provides farm inputs, harvest collection, storage and training (pruning/organic fertilizing, production etc.) via farmer field schools to its coffee farmers. Their farms are located on the eastern shores of Lake Nyasa in the rural southwest of Tanzania.

The Ethiopian cooperative is called Burka Geleti. They are located in the beautiful hilly landscape on the road between Addis Ababa and Harar. If we manage to reach our Kickstarter stretch goals, we want to help them export their coffee as well.

OSTELLA TEGELĒ “I have a one-acre farm on which I grow coffee. With 5 children and no husband, it is difficult to come around. The current market price for coffee barely covers my cost of production. I know the coffee that I grow is good, but it doesn't feel like I am rewarded for it”

UITHUNI NDUGURU: 62 years old has been farming for fifty years. Joining the MVIWAMBI cooperative two years ago has already given him access to pre-crop finance, good farm inputs, and training programs. However, coffee prices have consistently been low and volatile, which has resulted in years of uncertain income.

TUKO FABIAN "KIPICHI" KOMBA has been a member of MVIWAMBI since the start of the cooperative. His family has been living in the Mbinga region for generations and has been growing coffee since it was introduced by the Germans. He believes that if more people would know MVIWAMBI’s coffee and their farmers, prices could reflect the unique flavor of his coffee.

ENTENIUS NDUNGURU 55 years old, Entenius Ndunguru is a coffee farmer and also the operator of one of the shared processing units at MVIWAMBI. In this role within the cooperative, he makes sure all the coffee is wet-processed with highest quality standards. Higher incomes for the farmers at this cooperative would allow them to buy more CPU’s and save their time for the development of better quality coffee.

We want to change the coffee industry by enabling you, the coffee drinker and conscious consumer, to buy your coffee directly from farmers in Tanzania and Ethiopia.

By doing this, you can improve the lives of coffee farmers in one of the poorest regions in the world. These farmers, like Ostella, Uithuni, Kipichiand Grace from the MVIWAMBI cooperative, dedicate their lives to producing one of the world's most interesting and delicious coffees.

The MVIWAMBI cooperative sells most of their coffee to traders via the local auction. This is because no international coffee buyers and roasters dare to risk working with farmers directly and they choose to have middlemen ship for them.

On the other hand, MVIWAMBI’s farmers don’t know how to reach markets either, they feel that you (consumer) and the cooperative are worlds apart. As a result, MVIWAMBI sells their beans to unknown buyers at the auction for a very volatile and often low price.

Wakulimarket disrupts this unequal trade relationship by cutting out all unnecessary middlemen. We help the farmers to find the final buyers of their coffee and ship it directly to them. As a result, the farmers have the opportunity to create a long-term and sustainable relationships with these buyers, to co-invest in quality, and a higher and receive a more stable price for their beans.

Wakulimarket gives the farmers a better choice: to sell their coffee to YOU.

Exactly, to you :)
Exactly, to you :)

In our Kickstarter, you get a choice as well: to support these proud African farmers and buy their coffee directly from them. Know the farmer behind your coffee!

When we reach our 1st Kickstarter goal, we will bring one shipment of MVIWAMBI coffee from Tanzania to the Netherlands to roast it and send it to you. You can then make it into an espresso, a long black or whatever you like, using a simple filter coffee machine/percolator.

(if you have a Nespresso cup machine, send us a message and we can provide you with empty cups to put your coffee in

After reaching our further goals, we will start working with other cooperatives that we know throughout East Africa and turn Wakulimarket into a platform for them to reach the global markets.

Join our cause, and receive the following rewards!!!

€90,000 - Build out the Wakulimarket platform to enable cooperatives from all over the world to reach consumers and create coffee origin documentary series, discovering the lives of local coffee farmers across the world with documentary filmmaker, Albert Rano (website, reel, and production company Votary Media)

1. Buying coffee from the farmers & rewards

A big part of the pledge amount is transferred to the cooperative MVIWAMBI with in return for the coffee beans (with 30% premium above current market price). Besides the coffee transaction, we transfer the funds for the fertilizer facilities, and the trees (to the Kilimanjaro project).

2. Shipping

As the shipping volume is still relatively small, the shipping cost per kg coffee are higher than we would ideally like. In the future when we ship ever larger volumes of coffee this price will go down and therefore the price for you as a consumer as well.

3. Roasting

Roasting and packaging is done in the Netherlands by our partner Capriole Coffee. We pay a fixed price per kg roasted beans (20% roasting loss included) and for the packaging.

4.Distributing

The distribution costs are described in the shipping cost per reward.

Wakulimarket is a collective of a handful of incredible people from all over Europe and Tanzania committed to transforming lives through coffee.

Q&A

1. What is the difference between Wakulimarket and Fairtrade?

While Fairtrade is a very good initiative, it is sometimes difficult to know whether the farmer really gets a better price. The Fairtrade price is always defined FOB (meaning at the port), which is far away from where the farmer produced their coffee. Who knows how many middlemen were in-between to take a cut? Because of the 'grassroots' nature of the Wakulimarket model, we can offer complete transparent and traceable prices all the way to the farm. Furthermore, we offer the farmer a long-term relationship with the buyers of its coffee and the freedom to decide their own price instead of having a global certification organization doing this.

2. What is the business model of Wakulimarket?

Wakulimarket will never operate as a trader or 'middleman'. This means we will never own the coffee or have the incentive to buy cheap and sell high. All the coffee that we help transport and roast has already been sold to consumers. For our service, we take a small cut to pay for our costs. The prices of this Kickstarter are not exemplary of the coffee prices we want to offer further down the line. At this point, at a low scale, the logistics are not optimized yet and therefore those costs are higher.

3. What is a Khanga?

We have a special limited edition Khanga - a typical East African fabric, that carries messages for the owner, that has on it the campaign slogan “Tuje Pamoja - Let us come together.”

Risks and challenges

In the coffee trade in general there are many risks. From a shipment that is fermented to a bad harvest. Wakulimarket mitigates the risk by working with trusted partners along every step in the process. Through our close connection with MVIWAMBI and Burka Geleti Cooperative and the NGO (Agriterra) that supports the cooperatives, we are able to monitor the quality of the coffee at the origin.
For logistics we work together with Taylor Winch (a subsidiary of Volcafe) that has an extensive logistics network in East Africa. They do quality control and insurance as well. Furthermore, we partner with 2 cooperatives (MVIWAMBI and Burka Geleti) to mitigate the risk of a bad harvest. The coffee roasting is done by Giancarlo Matarazzi, a certified coffee cupper and roaster from the Hague. He will roast the coffee using the Capriole Roaster.
