Hi, I'm Ellen Jong and thanks for visiting my Kickstarter Page!
I've been dreaming about my first gallery show since I can remember and, here it is! I've come a long way since my photographs were first published in zing Magazine in 1999. As ecstatic as I am, the costs of the show including printing, mounting and framing are challenging. Your support will make a world of difference to me and for everyone who will be able to participate, that might even include you! Please pledge today.
THE INVISIBLE LINE
My first solo gallery show, The Invisible Line, will be at Allegra LaViola Gallery in NYC this June. It is curated by mr. and mrs. olu and it will be on view from June 6 - July 7, 2012, exhibiting 25 framed works; 16 photographs, 9 graphite on paper created between 2005 and 2009, and a mixed media video installation.
In 2010, I self-published a photography book that tells a personal story of falling in love. The photographs, taken over the first four years of our relationship and leading up to our wedding day, reveal the intimate and explicit nature of the relationship. The title, Getting To Know My Husband’s Cock, is quite literal. The word cock represents my husband’s manhood, and as I got to know him, I began to discover myself as a woman.
I decided to publish this book after we were married because I wanted to understand when, where, and what it was that made me fall in love and make the life changing commitment to marry. To my surprise, I found no singular image to reflect the moment or place, but instead found a series of images, that, when taken as a collection, would tell this story.
There is an invisible line that lies between my body and my mind. It withholds my deepest beliefs, fears, curiosities and desires. It is there to protect me. It is there to tell others where I stand, what is mine and why I am. In falling in love, I lost sight of my invisible line and I let it go. Love breaks down walls and sets you free.
Releasing the book took as much letting go as it took to fall in love and as a result, I was able to tell an honest story. For The Invisible Line, I want to create a moment - a Happening - that will allow others to let go of something inside them and perhaps explore a journey in self-discovery. It is said that the Truth shall set you free. This freedom comes when we allow ourselves to speak the things we protect the most. By putting them out there, we begin a practice of letting go, very much like the one I began when I started this book. I envision this Happening to be a chance to collectively be in pursuit of truth.
The HAPPENING is a participatory piece that involves an exercise in letting go. At the gallery, guests will be invited to write anything they wish on the theme of love on a piece of paper made available at the gallery. The pieces of paper will be collected at the gallery over one week starting from opening day of The Invisible Line. Once they are collected, the papers will be put into helium balloons and at a set time and place, they will all be let go. The balloons will not be tracked. Where the balloons pop in the atmosphere and where the papers fall will not be known. If the papers get read and by whom will be a mystery. All paper and balloons are biodegradable. The public is welcome to participate at the gallery.
The Happening is two-fold; one will write on a piece of paper, then that piece of paper will be let go.
*If you are unable to attend the gallery but would like to participate, please see your pledge options.
Come witness the second portion of the Happening - the letting go - at Allegra LaViola Gallery, Sat. June 16, 2012 at 2PM.
This will be photographed and filmed.

What will the rewards look like?
The rewards that pertain to the Happening will be created between the time of the opening day of the show to the day we let the paper filled balloons go. I can't guarantee what it will look like or how many people will participate or be in attendance. All I know is that one participant is all it needs to be a success. The more participants, the more impact - socially, conceptually and visually.
Then there are rewards that give you the chance to receive prints, books, walk throughs of the show at the gallery and more.
Please preview the book here: http://www.gettingtoknowmyhusbandscock.com/index.php?/project/inside-the-book/
How will the rewards be shipped?
Rewards will be shipped to the address you provide once we are in touch by email after you pledge. They will be shipped by USPS regular mail in either a cardboard mailer or 15x9.5in size box. All shipping is included.
Thank you for visiting and checking out my project. Sharing my work on Kickstarter has been a fresh and thrilling experience for me. Thank you Kickstarter!
