Rasa Caffe’s simple idea is to create a cozy yet elegant local coffee and specialty drink bar in South Berkeley, California, which will also feature artisanal food items from some of the finest local vendors. In partnership with the Firehouse Arts Collective, an award-winning arts hub located next door, Rasa Caffe will also display local art for sale. Our goal is to help our customers relieve their daily stresses by providing great ambiance convenience, friendly customer service, and products of consistently high quality. Rasa Caffe will be a place where people can enjoy consistently high-quality refreshments, and relax in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
Guided by flavor, Rasa Caffe will offer not only fine brewed coffee and specialty drinks, but also feature flavor and taste profile pairings: combining carefully chosen beverages with select baked goods from the finest local artisanal bakers.
The word “Rasa” is Sanskrit for “the essence of flavor”—a concept which has defined the path of Rasa Caffé founder Rasa Sun Mott. Upon graduating from the New York Restaurant School and becoming a certified professional taste tester, Rasa traveled the world challenging and developing his palate, experiencing first-hand the diversity of food, and people –something the Berkeley area also represents. After years of presiding on the front lines of kitchens coast-to-coast; from New York City’s Windows of the World to the celebrity chef Tanya Holland’s Oakland-based Brown Sugar Kitchen and B-Side BBQ, Rasa is ready for his own venture--to combine his technical experience, diversified tastes and trained palate to create an exciting new caffe!
Once established, Rasa Caffe will grow to include “to go” food items and a small retail area for specialty food items sourced from local artisanal producers.
Your investments will be used to fund the following things:
- To purchase key equipment including a coffee cart, espresso machine and refrigerator
- To renovate our space and create a wonderful ambiance so everyone feels welcome!
Uniquely located at one of Berkeley’s most heavily trafficked intersections, Rasa Caffe is perfectly situated to become a daily stop for local coffee enthusiasts and commuters alike. Not only is Rasa Caffe within 1 block of Berkeley’s largest commute hub, the Ashby BART train station but on the weekends, the station doubles as the site of Berkeley’s most popular flea market.
Rasa Caffe is already planning collaborations with next-door neighbor, the Firehouse Art Collective, an award-winning artist’s hub that draws crowds year-round. The caffe will partner with The firehouse art Collective to service their event needs and produce food-related special events like tastings and food pop-ups. Additionally, the Firehouse Art Collective has current plans to develop additional retail space at their sites which will further increase the exposure, foot traffic and potential clientele of Rasa Caffe.
We have secured a great storefront however to move forward we are in need of your pledges to help raise the appropriate capital. Uniquely located at one of Berkeley’s most heavily trafficked intersections, the location is situated to become a daily stop for local coffee/caffe enthusiasts and commuters alike. There will be minimal detailed renovation that is needed to represent the standards of Rasa Caffe.
