Music and sound design is something that's close to my heart, especially when it's used to bring video games to life. We've come a very long way since the early electronic bleeps of the first home consoles, and the games produced today boast stunning surround sound and fully orchestral scores that rival anything found in the movies.
But for some reason, game audio is still something that's not really recognised for what it is - an incredibly creative and often technologically challening process that greatly determines how much a player is engaged and immersed in their game.
I've been incredibly lucky over the last 20+ years to work with some of the best games composers and sound designers in the business, during my time working for the likes of Psygnosis, PlayStation, Dolby and DTS, and I reckon it's finally time to bring these unsung heroes into the light and celebrate their creations and their contributions.
So I'm bringing together more than 20 artists on to one album to celebrate my personal heroes of video game music. But they're not just MY heroes - the calibre of composers who have agreed to take part is immense and their work includes some of the highest profile, biggest-selling games of the last 30 years. Take a look at the artist list below and you'll see what I mean. We've got the people behind the likes of Gears of War, Myst 3, World of Warcraft, Wipeout, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Gran Tursimo, Mortal Kombat, Populous, GoldenEye 007 and even Sensible World of Soccer.

SO, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO CREATE?
With your help, we'll be creating a unique piece of audio history by bringing these award-winning musicians together on one album for the first time. Between them they'll create a host of new and re-worked tracks that will celebrate the wealth of styles and genres that we've seen in games across the decades. There'll be some classic chip-tune styling in there, as well as some of the more cinematic, orchestral tracks too, and everything in between. We're hoping to create at least one new piece that features contributions from ALL of our artists, something that will be a truly international collaboration. And we'll also have a couple more really unusual artist surprises to announce soon so keep checking back.
We'll also be producing a DVD version, that will feature extra tracks as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the mixing and mastering of the album, video diaries and messages from the artists, amongst a wealth of other cool stuff. And if you opt for one of the rewards that allows you to join us in the studio then you may well feature here too!
In addition, I'm also going to be bringing my 20+ years of experience to bear by remixing every track in glorious Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. I've spent most of my career in game audio, both composing, mixing and mastering tracks for games such as GTA: Vice City, Wipeout HD and Singstar, and also as a surround sound evangelist for Dolby themselves, helping to pioneer the inclusion of the very best audio technology in all the major consoles. Composers are, by their very nature, very precious about what they create but I've been humbled by their willingness to let me loose on their tracks and re-mix for this project. I'd like to think that's because they trust that I'm not only going to treat their work with respect but that my reputation for making absolutely no compromise in quality will make their tracks shine as they deserve.
HOW DO YOU KNOW I CAN DO THIS?
Well, apart from my credentials in games audio creation, and my extensive experience working in surround sound, I'm delighted to announce that Dolby are the official sponsor of the project. They have total faith that we can pull this off and they've agreed to come on board as a sponsor, offering us help and support as well as agreeing to host our launch event at their exclusive new Dolby Atmos-equipped exclusive Theatre in Soho, London. This will be an amazing night, where we'll get to hear the whole album in its entirety for the first time and you could be one of the exclusive elite to hear it with us! WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

HOW WILL WE USE YOUR MONEY?
The main bulk of what you pledge will go direct to paying for production costs and some of the physical costs involved in creating a DVD album. We'll obviously be spending a little of it on promotion and creating the reward items for you too, but I'll be giving my time for free throughout production, as will the artists involved. There's really no other way that an album like this could ever come into existence.
I'm really excited to hear the new tracks that these amazing artists will come up with but none of them will get to power up their instruments without your help so please have a look around the project page and help us create a truly unique piece of audio history.

Risks and challenges
The main risk on this project is simply down to the availability of the artists themselves. They've all generously agreed to take part in their own time so if any of them get tied up with work from their day jobs then there's a chance that delivery of a few of the tracks might slip slightly. Overall though, we think it's pretty realistic that we can gather and mix everything in time for a January launch next year.
We had originally set our funding goal (in an earlier Kickstarter project) at £22K but as we now have The Chairworks on board as an official studio sponsor, and Dolby as the project's official overall sponsor, our production costs have been significantly reduced, so we're relaunching now with a more appropriate funding goal.
