Trapped in a dark and gloomy temple, find your inner strength and courage to face its dangers. Show your Devotion!
Dark Devotion invites you in a rich and peculiar universe. You will go through more and more confrontations. If you happen to succeed once, good job. But don’t even think that the next step will be as effortless as the previous one.
Take part into rageous and bloody fights in which your opponents won't do you any favours. Be prepared to face foes that you won't forget. And remember, enemies as well as the Temple itself will want to strike you down : each and every fight is a duel to the death in which the slightest error may cost you your life.
- A strong RPG influence
You will have the chance to loot a lot of different weapons, armours and relics, which have their own qualities so that you have the chance to create your own build… for better and for worse…
Each weapon has its own specificities and statistics which you will also be able to custom with mystical runes. Roughly speaking : you have the choice to adapt your arsenal depending the enemy you’re facing and/or your preferences. Choose wisely.
- Pray for your safety
Kill enemies to collect some Faith. Indeed, Faith is necessary to many things such as : unlocking secret paths, special chests, and more… So use it sparingly.
The general amount of Faith you gather during a run is saved, and will be usable in the Filthblood Shelter (the HUB) to upgrade your unlucky character.
- Items for your salvation
Of course you will be able to heal your wounds or illnesses by consuming the right item. If you have the chance to loot the right one! A lot of other consumables are scattered in the Temple, spend them carefully to survive.
- The Temple can be a place of virtue for those who deserve it
If your prowesses are witnessed your God might want to give a hand, who knows? But it can also be a place of despair and sickness if you're not paying attention to what’s surrounding you so be vigilant and cautious, the Temple will not think twice about crushing you.
- You can't go back, every door automatically closes behind you
Each world has 3 or 4 different paths. Each path has its own environment and atmosphere. Some of them are inter-connected. As you can guess, every game will bring you through differents paths.
Secrets are shrouding the Temple, you must uncover them. But... watch out getting lost is so easy... However that's how secrets are found, isn't it? Do not worry, the Temple has its way to show good intentions. Indeed, you can find some hidden altars in the shadow which can save your equipment and/or your location if you take time to pray at them.
- Discover the complex story behind this Temple
Meet the lost ones who populate it, either directly or thanks to letters left behind by lost travelers. Some will even arrive at the shelter.
The Temple keeps its secrets as fiercly as a dragon would keep his gold... Discovering a text or a secret room will not be an easy thing ; however their discovery is crucial for the good understanding of the background as well as your progression through the game since they often contain usefull and powerfull items.
A story that became a myth
As far as we can remember, the Temple has always been our only goal : it is a place of darkness and despair from which no one ever came back, but our God commands us to overcome this shrine to prove our devotion. Everywhere Inquisition is reigning and everyone against it is brought to the temple.
Children are taken away from their parents and educated to become templars. Then they become warriors, trained to kill and lead their crusade to victory and devotion is their salvation. Templars usually go fighting as squads. Except for one girl. Facing dangers and atrocities, she can only rely on her own faith to stay alive through her journey. You are now that woman, that hero.
Rumors have it that this Temple once was only within reach of a small selection of people : located on the ruins of some ancient civilization that existed long before human era, originally luxurious and thriving, it has been seen for a long time as a place of worship filled with mystery. The story goes that the shrine’s aura would allow his inhabitants to withstand the passage of time. As Babylon reached out towards the heavens, the Temple digs down to the core of the earth. Only noblemen and chosen ones may occupy the deepest floors.
Rare were the souls who succeeded in slipping out of the bowels of the Temple… Their appearance was as appalling and horrific as their words. The Inquisition took good care in extracting the more information they could out of these inconsistent pieces of creature.
The common theory is the following : the Temple would be composed of (at least) 3 main levels. It appears that each floor has its own organisation so that nobody can ever reach the end of this inner world and take possession of it. First comes the dungeon which is composed of its habitats, sewage system and jails : it is the first defence. It is said to be fulfilled with wandering souls empty of any form of humanity, they look like they have been tortured. A message is engraved in what is left of their mind : exterminate all intruders. Those who were able to survive the first floor could access the second level.
There, a gloomy and hollow atmosphere surrounds everything, it gets thicker with the sounds of virgins crying and ancient beasts groaning. Obviously the place is filled with all kinds of beasts such as livestock, hounds or ancient form of creatures. Does this mean that the sacred architects of the Temple gave more value to the life of beasts than they gave to the human being who were tortured and skinned alive on the first floor ? Or, is it purely a strategic defensive choice ?
Deeper down, the third floor was dedicated to obscure and uncertain things like divination or occult sciences. But the descriptions of the place might be closer to superstitious speculations than real visions and facts : it is described as refined sites where black masses happen, nobody knows what kind of horrors are inhabiting these places.
At last, no one really knows what is hiding in the deepest abysses except from the fact that the last King, Théodore the Righteous and his beloved wife were living there surrounded by their holy guardians.
Indeed for the Templars, it's a place of catharsis and salvation. They're answering the divine call. In this way, they have to advance in squads to prove their value to show how much they cherish and love their God, and maybe even take the control over the Temple. Others see this place as a hellhole since depraved, rogue and untrusty people have been thrown in there to chase away the disgrace they represent from the surface of the ground.
Instructors told you that every Templars can sign up to enter a squad and show their value once they believe they are ready. Each Templar entering earns his fair place in Heaven. A Templar who dies in combat behind the massive door is a fulfilled Templar. And each Templar who crosses through that door helps somehow the front lines. “We will succeed in reaching the holy depths. There is no doubt left !” that’s what they told you during your instruction.

We are 3 autodidacts working hard,
It now has been 2 years and a half that the project started. This is what it looked like a year ago:
The game got Greenlit (january 2017) and the reception of the project by the public was truly amazing. It kept us thinking that Dark Devotion has a genuine potential. The core of the game and the first world are complete and we are very confident, so most of what’s coming next is already planned, even though it represents a lot of work before the outing of the game summer 2018!
If this campaign is a success, it then will be possible for us to:
- Keep going on the creation since all of us are now involved full time in it with no income. If the campaign does not work well, we will unfortunately stop working on the project before it is fully finished.
- Among other things : paying extra-workers to fine-tune the game or/and participate in video-game fairs and shows in order to promote the game. We are confident in the finalisation, the feedbacks from players are already really good and we are going to give the best of us to provide a challenging and rewarding game.
- Maybe... get the necessary fund to create our own studio!

Risks and challenges
When we started Dark Devotion (our very first game) , most of the risks and challenges seemed like overwhelming issues.
First of all, since none of us ever studied in our respective fields (Coding, sound, graphism etc...) , we clearly could not realise how gigantic the amount of work required was to build up a game like this. We aim high and that involves a consequent risk.
This is a game with depth, as we see it, it bears a certain risk too, since Dark Devotion will not only be a combat game with a high difficulty but will also be quite contemplative including a complex background story ; We prefered to give some time for maturation to the game before putting it on Kickstarter. But now that we are all under the same banner, our reliable and hardworking team is born, and we are certain of the direction that the project will take.
That being said : the hardest part is behind us and so far we managed to face all the challenges that came our way. The core gameplay and the first world are complete. The second world is almost there. Yet, we still have 2 worlds left to build and it takes time. But, if we validate the kickstarter, we will keep working with faith on Dark Devotion’s birth.
