Two-Wheeled Chronicles: Bicycling around the world with baby
A Film that would let you see the world through the eyes of one family traveling around the world by bicycle. The road to your dream.
Who we are?
We are a family of three from Ukraine; we are travelers, musicians, and artists. We started traveling 10 years ago, wanting to discover the real world on our own and see everything for ourselves first-hand. We also wanted to share our discoveries, so we created a project called “Two-wheeled Chronicles” that combines culture and travel.
Our baby boy Marko was born during our journey; by the age of 2, he had explored more than 8 different countries. We are united with by desire to explore the world together, and immerse ourselves in different cultures and landscapes.
Why do we travel?
If you only live once, shouldn’t you try to accomplish your biggest dream during that time? Well in 2009, we decided that our dream was to see the whole world. In 2014, we finally put our wheels to the road and have biked over 40,000 km (25,000 miles) through 25 countries. With each mile, we got the confirmation: “Yes, it’s worth it! This is your road to happiness! This is YOUR REAL LIFE.”
What would we like to share?
During all of our travels, we try to educate and entertain our audience by producing vlogs, films, radio programs, and articles. We also collect and publish folk songs from each of the places we visit. As a result, our project “Two-wheeled Chronicles” appears on several Ukrainian TV channels as well as Ukrainian Public Radio. It makes us happy to share our discoveries: wonderful cultures, unusual places, international music, and stories of the people we meet along the way. All of this inspires us to create music that we play on stages of many countries with our band Folknery.
We are currently putting together a film about everything we have learned and been enriched by from our world-wide journey. We want to share experiences that you don’t typically have when you live at home. Simply meeting people from around the world has changed not only how we see the world, but changed us entirely by creating a beautiful internal balance. Poor Indians and wealthy Europeans share the same basic human aspirations and struggles. We are all connected, regardless of our race or culture.
It has become our lifestyle to travel for so many years, and we want to show you what life on the road looks like. From crossing borders to fixing flat tires; and the difficulties of human relationships mixed with the joys of new life. Join us for amazing encounters, unexpected turns, and new discoveries daily.
What do we need to accomplish with our objective?
We started our journey around the world in 2014 and it is not over yet. We rode our bikes from Ukraine to Australia, and we still need to cover the other half of the globe. Only upon completion of the journey will we be able to produce a sufficient film (with a team of professional filmmakers) that is available in both Ukrainian and English, showing the world as seen through our eyes.
How it will all happen?
Our family will start the next stage of the journey in the summer of 2018. The 25,000 km (over 15,000 miles) route will go through Europe, Africa, and both Americas, and will take us a year and a half to complete it. We will be filming our journey while coordinating key moments with the film’s director remotely, just as it was done during the first stage of the project. We will also be doing a few shoots with the full film crew before, after, and during the trip. After we return, the footage will be edited with the help of professionals.
Just as before, we will continue to publish video episodes to our Youtube channel and one of Ukrainian TV channels.
Who will carry out the project?
While there are three of us who are traveling, there are others who participate in the project. It’s a group of extraordinary people and accomplished professionals who share a love of travel and world exploration. There will be directors, cinematographers, editors, designers and interpreters. We are very proud that some of the professionals joining us are a well-known Cannes festival group known as WhiteMovie Production.
Here is a sneak peak of what WhiteMovie Production is capable of:
“Our film will tell a story about everything being possible if you believe in your calling and act. We want to show that the world is open to you as well just like it is to Volodymyr, Yaryna and Marko. There are no real reasons not to travel, not to discover national traditions, not to learn new things these days. You shouldn’t really postpone your dreams as discovering unknown is one of the oldest human instincts. Structurally the film will be based on an interview with Yaryna and Volodymyr, during which they will describe the most interesting and most dramatic parts of the journey. In parallel we will show chronological footage and tell the stories that happen along the way. We will record the interview both before and after the trip to examine any transformations that happen to our characters. We have a few planned trips to meet up with them in several journey points to document their experience from “the outside”.
“We are planning to use the elements of fiction storytelling with several plots to enrich viewing experience in addition to the documentary style footage form this amazing journey. It will make the picture structurally complex but at the same time very vivid, emotionally rich and interesting”.
How will we spend the funds?
Our budget is comprised of three key items that are most critical to the success of the project. That’s where you can help us.
- $4,500 USD will cover two transatlantic flights and several sea ferries for the bicycles and equipment.
- $5,500 USD will be used to upgrade and modernize the video equipment used for filming the journey. This is imperative for achieving high-quality video footage, and to deliver the required technical and artistic feel of a feature film.
- $9,000 USD, a shoestring-sized budget, will cover the costs of directing such a film, plus cinematography and editing. This budget will also be used to cover several trips for the camera crew, plus the filmmaking process: filming, editing, color correction, and delivery of the final product.

Risks and challenges
The biggest factor for achieving this success is our previous experience. We have already rode our bikes across half the world and we know how to achieve our set goals. We have become not only a strong family, but a gracious team of people who are capable of creating a product that is both interesting and high-quality. Each member of the team is highly skilled in several areas. Volodymyr is a knowledgeable and experienced audio and video professional. Yaryna is experienced as a TV and Radio host. We have strong partnerships with Ukrainian Public Radio and several TV stations. We have shot a ton of video that has been aired on TV. We have written a number of articles in print and digital media.
Our partnership with professional filmmakers WhiteMovie Production is also reassuring in reaching our goals. They have been hugely successful on a global level, as they’ve contended and won several well-known festivals: Cannes, Kerry Film Festival, Lloret de Mar and many more.
Certainly there is always a possibility for the unexpected to happen when you travel with a small child. Before we started the trip with our baby, we decided that it shouldn’t be overly burdensome for him. We promised each other that we will stop when it gets too difficult for him, and this remains our principle going forward. However, from the very beginning, Marko has loved travelling as much as his parents do. He is curious, full of energy, loves to move and feel the road. In total, we have traveled over 5,000 km (3,000 miles) with Marko and realize that travelling is actually very beneficial to his development as he discovers the world through his own eyes, and relishes at the opportunity to communicate with children from different cultures.
With our travels, we want to show people that the world is better and more hospitable than we imagine from our couches at home. To truly understand the world, you need to see it with your own eyes; or perhaps you journey with us and support Two-Wheeled Chronicles. If you agree, please support our project so we can spread this idea among people.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
