About

Hello Cyber Friends!

  • Have you ever noticed that there are dozens of elementary reading and math websites to aid in teaching the fundamentals to children, but relatively few for music?
  • Have you been discouraged at how expensive music products cost compared to similar math/reading products?
  • Does the prospect of teaching your child music frighten you because the basic music fundamentals remain a mystery to you?

These are problems that I have seen, but as I began striving for a solution, I ran into a few problems of my own.

First, the best way for me to disseminate information is on the internet, and I am not a technical guru, nor do I have the artistic skills to make my ideas look the way I want them to.  My husband does, but as he is our breadwinner, his time to help me has been limited.  Furthermore, as a "stay-at-home-Mom", the majority of my time is dedicated to nurturing our children.  While overall I enjoy this balance, it does mean that the music project has waited on the back burner.  Even so, my husband has always wanted to do something on the internet and I would love to do more with my ideas.

The solution?

If I can show my husband that there is enough interest in my music ideas to make a stream of income, he has agreed to become an entrepreneur and work with me on this project.  We want to be a stay-at-home family, although our home itself may not necessarily stay in one place.  :)

This is not a grand plan to make our family rich, but a modest plan to produce materials for customers comparable to the income we receive.  If we can make a full-time income, we will treat this as a full-time job, making all of our work freely available to our collective of patrons.

Would you like a free sample of my work?  Great!  Here is a free e-book compilation of the printables I had on the website in the past.  At 15mb, it's somewhat of a large file.  http://www.teaching-children-music.com/products/Music_Games_and_Activities.pdf

The Cost?

Here is the break-down.  In the past, our customers have purchased "Beginning Rhythm" and "The Solfege Train" for $35. We have received positive feedback on the value provided in these printables for that price.

During this Kickstarter campaign, $30 will get you access to all the materials in my first two products, PLUS everything we add to the website during the first SIX months!

That means that the worst case scenario is that the membership site becomes a big flop and I add very little, but as a PLATINUM Patron, you still would be getting a fair value for your support.  BEST CASE scenario is that the membership site is a success and the value will truly be incredible.  I believe that music education should not be expensive and I would love to share what my expertise and experience has afforded me.

Who is my target audience?

Well, as a homeschool graduate, I have a soft spot for the homeschooling movement, but with music programs being cut from public schools, I wish to reach out to all families wanting to build or supplement an at-home music program.

I also want to cater to private music teachers and classroom teachers. Therefore, the small membership fee qualifies any teacher to make print-outs for as many students as they have.  This also means a homeschool co-op can share the fee for all the children in the group, with the draw-back that only one parent would have access to the website with the videos.  Any videos we add on the site can be shared in a classroom setting with the teacher's membership login as well.

Many of the printouts are in large font.  This is ideal for classroom use as well as early learners because small children do better with easy-to-read font.

What can you expect as far as content?

Well, what would you like to see?  I have a Facebook group set up to reach out and get feedback from my community.  I have much to learn from you!  Please join and tell me what you would like to see. https://www.facebook.com/groups/346594065513959/

Some of my ideas that I want to work on:

As mentioned in the video, I am currently working on digitizing a classic sight-reading book from 1914 (public domain!), enlarging and color-coding the melodies and making videos for each exercise.

I was a pianist in the Jazz band back in my college days, and have been working on a course to teach chord recognition, improvisation, and how to play by ear.

I want to add basic recorder lessons.

Music theory is my forte, and I have been working on a project to simplify advanced concepts to make them more accessible to children. Things like interval recognition, basic form, transposition, voice leading, recognizing major and minor keys, and so forth.

I would also like to dabble in classroom activities, such as boomwhacker, percussion, and Orff-like compositions.

I would love to grow the business by hiring artists to make the materials more attractive (like Yuribelle on Fiverr that did our family picture featured on the website), interviewing musicians for educational videos, purchasing better equipment to make our materials with, and so forth.

My GOAL!!!

How much we are able to devote to the project will be directly linked to how successful the new website launch is. This is where the kickstarter campaign comes in.

I AM going to build this site.  To make it viable, we are going to start out at $10 a month until we have 500 subscribers, drop it to $7 a month until we have 1,000, then keep it at $5 forever.  I’m making a big push for that 1,000 subscribers as soon as possible (Kickstarter backers included) .  While I don't expect to reach that number during the campaign, I do need to prove to my husband, and myself, that enough people are interested to make that goal attainable in the near future. That’s what I hope to accomplish with this Kickstarter campaign. The more subscribers, the more value we can provide. Thank you so much for your time!

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is that with no further support, I add very little to the membership site, aside from the guaranteed "Beginning Rhythm" and "Solfege Train" pre-made materials. The project goals stated in the video are all tentative projects with no guaranteed timeline. I'll churn them out as fast as I can, but the actual materials will be varied, based on the feedback I get from members, as well as which materials add the best overall value to the site. The membership site will be up and available for six months, guaranteed, if the project is funded. At that point, if we are making a full-time income, we will continue to build it. If not, we may pull the membership aspect down and reinstitute individual products with whatever content we have added during that time.
