Thanks for clicking this project, you massive hero. Please have a read and get in touch if you have any questions. So excited to make this a reality.
My name is Lorenzo and I opened LP Records in Glasgow, Scotland back in 2015. Since then we've actively committed ourselves every day to the pursuit of discovering and sharing new music and have got that energy back in spades from the amazing people of this music-mad city.
As much as I've loved it I've become a little disillusioned exclusively selling vinyl, and as such have been sitting on this plan for the last wee while.
We spend every day of our lives soaking up music and curating it, it's time to put that into practice outwith a retail marketplace that's getting ever more expensive and often untenable for the average music fan. If you've been part of LP for a while or you're completely new to us please have a read through and consider helping us make this project a reality.
WHAT'S THE PLAN?
Free from agenda, guidelines, and pretension. A radio station for music, debate, patter, and community.
This station is for music fans first and foremost. Music will be the focal point of everything we do, with a primary but not all-encompassing spotlight on new releases, from major labels right down to local bands.
With the capacity to run 24/7 and available worldwide, for LP Radio the aim is to have the station grounded in the best place on Earth, Glasgow but facing out to the rest of the world.
Programming will consist of live and pre-recorded shows, each one independently curated and planned by its host.
There will be new release shows, throwback shows, mixed shows, talk shows, themed shows, request shows and an unlimited free reign litany of everything and anything we want, guided by our listeners feedback.
If you've grown weary of mainstream radio's formulaic and distant approach to playlisting and discovery, LP will bring it's trademark eulogizing fanaticism in sharing new artists for you to fall in love with each and every day. I get frustrated watching amazing music blossom on indie labels, in indie blogs etc, loved by thousands only to be touted as "ones to watch" or only worth airplay when they sign to a major. These are the artists we want to highlight, we want to create a station where the only criteria is if the tunes are good. We will be working every day to bring you these artists.
Upon launch, live shows will be broadcast from the studio above the record store on Park Road, Glasgow every day. The Glasgow broadcasts will feature rotating DJ's, regular guests and interviews, and sessions with touring musicians. The sessions will either be stripped back and hosted inside LP Records or full band studio sessions in which we will broadcast live and record video.
Furthermore, we will have remote live and pre-recorded broadcasts from our friends across Europe and in the USA, ranging from some of our most respected curators to our favourite labels and musicians. No-one DJ'ing on LP will be doing so with any agenda other than to share great music.
This allows the station to run a fresh 24-hour schedule for a global audience. Featured shows will be repeated in the middle of the night for the respective countries, meaning across the world you can take in our primary new shows at a reasonable time, regardless of your location.
The voices featured on the station will be diverse, engaged, competent and from a variety of musical backgrounds, united around the common goal of music discovery.
As we grow I'd absolutely love the station to naturally flesh itself out beyond exclusively music shows. We'd love to involve a variety of content creators and even flesh the programming out to include current affairs, comedy, culture etc. But we have to start somewhere and we start where we're strongest.
If we meet our goal our licensing will allow us to offer every show as a catch-up podcast immediately after it's broadcast. Music included. If you don't listen to radio much and prefer to have this kind of content in demand on the go then we're here to help! Miss your favourite show? Go catch up in your own time.
WHAT THE MONEY WILL BE USED FOR
The money I've asked for is the minimum (including Kickstarter fees/reward manufacturing) we'd need to get up and running on top of what I've already put in place. Here are the very simple things it would cover.
A new computer, hopefully, two. Right now in the shop, I work exclusively off an 8-year-old MacBook that is full to bursting point with excel spreadsheets, bad photoshops and football manager saves. The headphone jack is broken, the webcam drowned by a falling cup of tea and half the keys numbed by a baggage handler in Seattle. To run the wonderful, professional setup we want to, I'd need a nice powerful computer to sit in LP exclusively for radio business.
Soundproofing the studio. The Studio will be upstairs in LP Records, you can currently see up there where I've balconied off the open mezzanine. I want to remove the balcony and box the studio in with thick glass. Not only will this mean we can broadcast live while keeping the shop open downstairs, but it will also look class as you can see us recording in our wee glass box from the street or in-store. Some additional soundproofing will need to be done on the side walls of the upstairs due to us having neighbours!
Licenses. We want to play whatever we want on LP Radio. To be allowed to do that we have to pay significant fees both monthly and annually to collection agencies working on behalf of the artists to collect their royalties. It's a fair whack of cash. Fair play. Help us out and in turn, help the artists we play to get paid.
Equipment Upgrade. We have a good setup. I'm pleased with it. Could it be better? Absolutely. With some extra cash, we could get lovely new equipment for our engineers and DJ's to play with.
Running costs. I'd like to get a jump on our running costs from the start. We pay a fee for our host service, they offer it in tiers and so the more money we can afford to pay them the fancier the radio station we can offer you is. Better quality streaming, fancy features like phone-ins and a request submission box etc. Also, I want this all to sound as great as possible so I'd love to have some permanent engineers etc for the live shows and I'd like to pay em!
PRETTY BASIC RIGHT? But what would we do with more money than the goal?
Raising the goal amount means we can launch for you and start working from there. Hitting more than the goal doesn't mean we rest on our laurels. I'm wary of these being "stretch goals" as we don't get any money if we don't hit them, so I'll just give you an idea of what we'd do with more money.
Quite simply, we'd scale up all our plans. A show of interest and intent from the public that would be made clear by crashing through the goal would mean we could move on to future plans immediately, like developing an app for the station, expanding the variety and complexity of our shows, including having room to pay DJ's outwith advertising etc. We'd go top of the range on everything we have, like our streaming bandwidth and most importantly we'd flesh out the music library! The more money we have the more tunes we can purchase for you to hear!
Will I even like your music taste?
A fair point, we're making these bold claims about curation but you might not even know us? The station will be rammed full of quality ears so I can guarantee you'll find your way. I hate genres because I love all of them, it's all music at the end of the day, our general shows will consist of exclusively good music, no matter what end of the spectrum it falls on. I find that when we talk about this you'd be surprised how easy it is to find common ground between music fans. Any questions at all please give me a shout on firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you're in Glasgow, I want the introduction of this studio and this project to grow the space on the Park Rd, I want you to be able to come in and take part, to feel a connection to it. We'll be doing that by using the space for more intimate events and things linking both the vinyl store and the radio.
We do this, as always with zero outside funding and with no paymaster to satisfy.
We are LP Radio and we want to put in the work for people that love music as much as we do. Give us that chance.
Risks and challenges
This is more directed at Glasgow based supporters and people who know the shop or are maybe worried about what it's future looks like.
It's been a tough year for me, a year that started full of promise. When things have been tough I let that affect the shop and for that, I'm truly regretful. This radio plan was my long-term goal that's now become my immediate focus. The shop will absolutely still continue and I hope they will complement each other, particularly with the shop's new focus exclusively on new releases. Hopefully, we can turn you onto some new stuff and then you can grab it from right underneath the studio! The space is all opened up to be more flexible for events as well. I put this in the challenges section to be as transparent as possible about the intentions for the space, I wanted to run away from it all at points this year in all honesty, and that caused all the delays and confusion over the summer, but we're back on track and full of passion again, and to be honest I'm so chuffed to finally be putting this in motion.
As far as risks for the fundraiser go, I've got the launch in place, I've got this going. The rewards are all in hand, we just need the money to cover our initial outlay. Your support is honestly so appreciated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
