The Swap-O-Matic is a vending machine that promotes trading and swapping as a sustainable alternative to buying new.

Why we're on Kickstarter & our latest CNN Video!

We’ve been asked, “Why is the Swap-O-Matic on Kickstarter?”

We received many, many emails from interested individuals who loved Swap-O-Matic, and hoped to get a machine in their city, town, or neighborhood. Our mission has always been to get as many machine’s to communities that will use them, and not just to those that have the financial means to get their own machine. The project’s community values and mission are to very important us, and we feel that everyone should have an opportunity to experience the machine themselves.

Our answer was to turn to Kickstarter.com, and attempt a crowd-funding project that would help us redesign the Swap-O-Matic, create a robust online community, and bring it to at least five new locations in the continental United States. We wanted to give people the power to vote on the location at a very low entry point–a $5 pledge amount. We believed each supporter should have a vote, and not increase with amount pledged. We could do what we do best – improve the Swap-O-Matic and the swapping experience – and our supporters could reap the benefits and be a part of this expanding movement!

Great video, it’s interesting to hear about the genesis of the Swap-O-Matic from your childhood values. I think most of us were also raised to believe wasting things is wrong, and yet there is a huge disconnect between our values and practices. Projects like this one are an important way to reconnect our values with our routines!
