Battle it out against your friends in a Top-Down Arcade-Style Arena Brawler like you’ve never seen it before. Build the ultimate, over the top character from a ridiculous amount of abilities and outfits and get ready to bring glory to your tribe as you slay your enemies, provided the arena doesn’t kill them first.
Originally inspired by the Warcraft III mod Warlock, we have set out to make an arcade-style arena game that captures the raw joy and hilarity created from fast-paced, chaotic core gameplay mechanics and the rewarding feeling of mastering said mechanics as you learn to outmaneuver your opponents and laugh as they fall victim to your mind games.
First things first - before you get to show off your amazing skills in the arena and get smacked around by the opposing team, you need to set up an Ability Loadout for your character.
Let’s say you want to get up close and personal with your enemies, never giving them any breathing room? Then short range Offensive abilities and mobility sounds like your thing. Or maybe you want to set up beautiful plays for your team and just be a general annoyance to your opponents? Well then Control and Positioning abilities is definitely the way to go.
In other words, RUiN heavily revolves around the abilities that players have at their disposal. The ability pool spans a wide variety of ways to topple your opponents and should offer something for everyone, no matter their preferences.
When designing abilities for the game, we focus on three keywords: Simple, Varied and Impactful. The basics of abilities are easy to learn, it’s in the combinations among abilities that the depth lies. The abilities are also varied and have a strong impact on how every game plays out, resulting in a game that stays fresh and forces players to adapt instead of falling back on safe picks.
So you have finally come up with a genius combination of abilities that will make you a monster in the arena. Time to show the mass what true power looks like!
The core ingredient that makes the combat in RUiN a blast, is the Knockback mechanic. The vast majority of the abilities in the game knocks your opponents back, which might not sound like such a big deal until you realize that large parts of the arenas in the game are filled with hazards that will kill you in a heartbeat if you’re not careful. As if that wasn’t bad enough, players that take a lot of hits in succession will be knocked back even further.
The knockback serves as a tool to quickly eliminate your foes and is vital to both utilize and avoid. What makes it so great is that you don’t have to master it to enjoy it. The process of mastering it is just as much fun (if not more), much like the process of mastering control of the ball in Rocket League.
As you might have understood by now, the arenas in RUiN are as much out to kill you as your opponents are. The environment is filled with traps and hazards that will catch you by surprise if you lose focus for even a moment.
Furthermore, the arenas change in size and shape over the course of a match, meaning that the raging sandstorm far off in the distance that does not look like much of a threat right now, might have trapped you in a corner after a few seconds if you are not careful.
No matter where you are, make sure to use the arena to your advantage and capitalize on your enemies for being out of position.
So you have mastered a wide range of abilities and know how to use the hazards and traps in the arenas to your advantage. You are finally ready to bring pride to your tribe. But you cannot do that looking like a fool can you?
In RUiN, you get to select a tribe that your character belongs to. Once you have selected a tribe of your liking, you get to browse a large variety of available armors and other equipment to tailor the character of your liking. As you play the game, you will notice that your armory quickly grows and committed players might even get their hands on a legendary item or two.
At the moment there are three unique tribes in the game – The Bears (Down to earth northerners with an inclination toward good ale and fancy beards), the Apes (Peaceful monks that practice the old martial arts style of Apashite Kung Fu) and the Red Pandas (Also known as Catbears among northerners; a migrant race that travels from town to town looking for work. Cute and friendly people but beware: Do not let them get their hands on honey).
At Tarhead we have been working part-time on RUiN for about two years now, fighting to make the game as good as it can be while having other jobs on the side. We have gone through countless iterations - beginning in a sci-fi environment, then transitioning into the tribal fantasy world you are looking at today - to find the core of what we want RUiN to be.
Now, our focus lies in getting the game out there and we are looking to you for help. We are not asking for much as we are getting close now, all we want is to be able to put all of our focus on the game for the last stretch.
If you decide to support us, we would be sincerely grateful for enabling this group of nerds to finally release our baby into the world.
What we are looking for is to fund the release of the Early Access. This does not include paying salaries but rather being able to release and sustain the game. This, for example, means setting up servers and being able to keep the game alive until, and during, the launch.
Hopefully, they go to schools grooming the next generation of game developers.
It costs money to do the campaign and to get the money when it is done.
Art books, t-shirts and shipping is not free. Instead of having you pay for it separately we included it in the rewards so it's all taken care of.
Tarhead Studio consists of 12 developers who got together during our time studying Game Development at the University of Skövde, Sweden. During 2013, we started working on a little side project that was going to become RUiN as you see it today. After some time we realized the true potential of the game and formed the company you're looking at today.

Risks and challenges
Developing a game comes with numerous risks. Some of these include budget, time constraints and limited man hours. To account for these risks we have spent a lot of time prototyping, concepting and developing RUiN as much as possible before coming to Kickstarter for support.
RUiN has been a dream for us and we are determined to bring it out to the world. Your contribution will allow us to do just that. Sure, some inevitable problems may cause delays, but that will not stop us from achieving our goal, which is to deliver a excellent gaming experience.
