The Village Cinema must upgrade to digital movie projection equipment or the only Grand Coulee Dam area theater will be no more.
The Village Cinema: Into Darkness or a Light of the Future?
Greetings fellow movie lovers, my name is Don Redfield and together with Lynette Zierden, Alisa Thomason,Mara Landrum, Jimmy Francis and some other helpful folks from our community we run the Village Cinema in Coulee Dam WA. The Village Cinema was purchased by Carole Fisher in January 2012. The former owner was ready to move on and Carole wanted to see this community entertainment center remain a vibrant part of the Grand Coulee Dam area. Carole was fighting cancer at the time and sadly did not survive the year.
Carole Fisher's community spirit lives on through her family and their desire to keep the Village Cinema going. Lynette and her children, Alisa, Mara and Jimmy, together with some help from others in the community open the doors every weekend to the local community to show recently released movies.
The Village Cinema has also become a place for the local schools to present programs and most recently hosted a beauty pageant for girls up to age 18. More programs, in addition to movies, is part of what the theater hopes to continue to bring to the area.
A change in the motion picture industry has led to a hard choice. As the Hollywood movie studios are committed to reducing their movie production and distribution costs they are eliminating the use of film. Very soon, every movie theater in the country, including the Village Cinema, will either have to convert their film projection systems to the new digital format or be out of business with no new movies to show. In order to continue both as a movie house and a community program facility we will need to convert or walk away at the end of the year.
Digital is the future and the future is now Many of us were just not around at the last major evolution of theater film presentations when “talkies” represented positive change for movie audiences of the 1920s. It was a leap forward in the industry and the theater going public. In the same way the switch to digital presentation is good news for today’s movie lovers. The digital picture and sound is phenomenal! With this system Village Cinema patrons will enjoy the same high quality presentations they would find in big city, large chain movie houses here at home in the Grand Coulee Dam area. Digital presentation means that the picture looks and sounds great when you run it. No more large platters with an inefficient expensive energy using projector with a 1,000-watt bulb shining through it. The shipping and related costs of the new digital movies on a hard drive storage unit will also cost far less that the heavy, multi-reel format of film. Digital will allow our community theater to present movies in a state-of-the-art format and will keep The Village Cinema viable for decades to come so that future generations can continue to enjoy this unique movie experience! It'll also keep the Village Cinema doors open for many other community presentations.
It is our intention to stay in business, but we'll need a lot of support from those who love movies and local programs. What does The Village Cinema need to “go digital?” A digital projector together with an upgraded audio system to deliver digitally produced sound. New lenses to display the movie properly on the screen. A server to download and store the digital movie content. A backup power system to keep the server online in case of power failure. A new screen and masking to capture the digital images. The base for the projection system and server. Backup spare parts funding - can't afford a second projector for backup, so we need to keep a few spare parts on hand. Fees to cover the cost of delivery, installation and alignment of this new equipment. Plus the construction fees to prepare the projection booth to accommodate the new projection and sound system. We'd like to eventually explore a plan to include a 3D system, but for now that would impact our ability to continue to keep our admission prices low.
Save The Village Cinema Friends, our back is against the wall. The Village Cinema is the only movie theater in the Grand Coulee Dam area still. It has continued to draw enough customers to keep the doors open, but the expenses continue to rise; annual lease, utility and supply bills, employee expenses, cleaning staff and, of course, taxes. Without the new digital projection system, we'll have no choice but to close up. The Village Cinema can be saved, but only with your support.
KickStarter to the rescue!
We, like many others before us, were pleased to find out about KickStarter and the opportunity it presents to help us raise the necessary funding from donors to help us convert to the new digital standard. This KickStarter project can be the answer to our needs! Everyone involved will benefit from this digital conversion. It will allow The Village Cinema to carry on for many more years of service to the community and it will provide current and future generations with an even greater movie-going experience that you can only find at a one-screen neighborhood theater. Our patrons will be treated to images and sounds greater than they've ever seen before at The Village Cinema. Keeping the doors open allows a space for much more than just movies. We want to continue to make the space available for programs that benefit the whole community. To our donors, enjoy your rewards! We've tried to make them a great value for your donation bracket. It is our understanding that this KickStarter project is an all-or-nothing funding opportunity. If we don't reach our goal, the pledged funds disappear and we have nothing. On the other hand, if we should be fortunate enough to exceed our goal, those additional funds will be used for other modifications that The Village Cinema so badly needs. We hope to see you all soon - and if you're not from the area, we hope one day you get the opportunity to visit us! Thank you for your support - the future of The Village Cinema, the movie theater for the Grand Coulee Dam area community, is in your hands.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have the desire to continue operating the local theater. We know that the local economy can support a theater, and the community will support it if there is one here to support. We have contacted the resources necessary to make this project come together and upgrade the building and equipment to bring the needed technology to the Grand Coulee Dam area. The largest hurdle to face is that of funding. Without it, the equipment we've found, the technicians to install it and the theater team we have to operate it will never be able to move forward. During the preparations for this project our 35mm Projector went down. The replacement part we need isn't even made anymore and there are no more on the shelf! So our other hurdle it to get this new projector in and running as soon as possible to cover the bills while not making any income.
The KickStarter site is just one means of fund raising. We are reaching out to the local service clubs, cities, and individuals. We encourage all pledges for donations be forwarded through this site to ensure we meet our fund raising goal.
This project is also a tribute to the memory of Carole Fisher, a community supporter of the Grand Coulee Dam area.
