Here's the scoop
With the poor lighting conditions in our auditorium, we have to think about alternative ways to present our performances for the 2013-2014 season. One of the options was to perform at another school, but having to transport the many students, equipment, and instruments would create a logistical and budget nightmare! Plus, our Pups deserve to perform on their home turf. Our second thought was to just cancel the season, but that would ruin the 80 plus years of rich performance tradition, and hinder the growth of the many Lanier Purple Pups. We need a new lighting system to replace the aging system we currently use in our auditorium. So, we need your help to prevent from canceling our 87th performance season.
Who are the Purple Pups?
The Purple Pups are students, 6-8th grade, from Sidney Lanier Middle School in Houston, Texas. Our school was built in 1926 and has many historical ties to the community. We are a Gifted and Talented and International Baccalaureate School. Our students filter into some of the top schools in the state of Texas, such as Carnegie Vanguard High School, High School for Performing and Visual Arts, Debakey High School for Health Professions, and many more. Lanier Middle School has produced proven leaders; such as, Walter Cronkite and Denton Cooley just to name a few. http://www.purplepups.org
What goes into a lighting renovation?
We currently have 8 working stage lights that are not in practical positions in the auditorium; they pose plenty of hazards. We plan to move our lighting system to a safe location and replace our current dimmer controls with a wireless system. Overall, we want to create 9 lighting areas on our stage using 2 lighting instruments per area. The use of the new lighting system will save energy by replacing our 1000 watt bulbs with 575 watt bulbs. Lastly, our lighting control console will be replaced to give us the ability to operate the latest in lighting technology. This lighting renovation will require plenty electrical work, hardware installation and redesigning. By making these improvements, we will improve visibility and keep from canceling our 87th performance season.
When do we expect project completion?
The bulk of our lighting renovation will take place during the summer break of 2013, which is perfect since students will be out of school for a couple of months, and the project will continue into early fall 2013 school year. The plan is to have the system up and running by the last week of October 2013 just in time for our first auditorium performance.

Why should you help our project?
Despite not having all the bells and whistles that most successful schools have at their disposal, Sidney Lanier Middle School has a reputation for providing the best academics, producing winners, and having one of the strongest fine arts departments in the district. Art, Orchestra, Choir, Theatre, Dance, Debate, and Band have many national and local championship titles, University Interscholastic League awards, Sweepstakes honors, and the list is growing. Lanier students deserve to work in a performance facility that can help them grow, be safe, and educate them for the next level of education. So, whether you are a current or former student, or just a person with a heart of gold, why not pledge and be a part of the legacy. Help Sidney Lanier Middle School spotlight the next Mozart, Michelangelo, Tommy Tune, Walter Cronkite or the next Beyonce.

Risks and challenges
We have vendors ready for the green light to complete the renovation so we know we will get it done! Our challenge will be to complete the bulk of the renovation in the summer, and work around the students with minimal disruption during the fall. Basically, I am determined to get this project funded and completed because I want the kids of Sidney Lanier Middle School to continue the performance tradition, and enjoy the benefits of feeling safe on stage, enjoying the bright lights, and experiencing the latest stage lighting technology.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
