NEW PERKS!! STRETCH GOAL!! In this quirky comedy sitcom a Pastor (Stephen Baldwin) inherits the bar across the street from his church!!
RECENT AND BREAKING NEWS!!STEPHEN BALDWIN talks THIS KICKSTARTER on NATIONAL FOX NEWS RED EYE with GREG GUTFELD, Saturday Jan 11!!
In this quirky sitcom recently widowed Pastor Darren Keaton (set to be played by Stephen Baldwin) is struggling to raise his young biracial daughter alongside his adversarial live in African-American Mother-In-Law when he inherits Hard Knocks Bar and Grill from a close friend and parishioner. Will his already dwindling congregation at Solid Rock Church support him in honoring his dear friends final wishes?
We are raising funds to cover the production of network television quality footage, and to take that footage to networks to pitch this project as a regular series. Keep in mind, we only receive the funds you are pledging after we meet our minimum goal of $50,000 by the end of our campaign! If we do not meet our goal, you will not be charged!
The first thing we will do at the conclusion of our successful campaign, is decide how much footage we can make. We anticipate that if we reach our goal of $50,000, we will be able to make a 10 minute (approximately) short film… Something that is extremely important to us is that the footage we film form a cohesive and quality story within the Rock And A Hard Place world. We won’t just film one or two scenes, we’ll take our pilot script, our series bible, and we’ll make a cohesive short film that will showcase our storytelling ability, our actors, our director, and will allow us not only to show this around to networks, but also submit to film festivals worldwide; everything we can do to draw more attention to the series.
Now, in a far better scenario, everyone will see just how great a story we have here, and we’ll double our goal, or more. With $100,000, I am very confident that we can make an incredible network television quality half hour series length pilot episode that would have the potential to be picked up straight to series, ready for pilot season!
Last but definitely not least, in a perfect world scenario, and with loads of help from the Rock And A Hard Place community, the Kickstarter community, the Independent Film community as a whole, and television fans everywhere that want to see this story come to life… If we reach the $300,000 or higher range, we will be able to make a network television quality, full hour-long series pilot, ready to air. For every extra bit of funds we raise, we will be able to make all that much higher quality an episode putting us closer to bringing Rock And A Hard Place to living rooms across the country – and around the world!

Risks and Challenges
We’ve already overcome our first, and biggest challenge; we have our star! Stephen and his agent, we can’t thank them enough, have been just incredible. Initially we contacted Stephen hoping the series would appeal to him enough to consider a cameo… As we talked further, we just threw it out there… would he be interested in a recurring role, and willing to sign a letter of intent? Absolutely. Finally as we began discussing what role, his agent expressed he would likely be interested in the lead, and after waiting on pins and needles for confirmation from Stephen we were able to verbally confirm that Stephen did want to play Pastor Keaton!
Additionally: we have cast Four Time Grammy Award winner, John Schlitt (lead singer Petra) in a recurring role, as the maintenance man at Solid Rock Church, Berkeley Clayborne as Pastor Keaton's daughter, Lindee Link in a yet to be announced 'top secret' role, Darren Marlar as Gary from GJ Construction Co. and Dan McGowan as Jeff from GJ Construction Co. Series Creator Darren Marlar and Comedian Dan McGowan are also writers on the series, Braxton Cosby as the Worship Leader of Solid Rock Church, while Grammy Nominee Bryan Duncan has created our theme song!
Once we reach our goal one of the first things we will do is get the ball rolling on our SAG contracts, insurance, and necessary legal matters. Next, depending on the amount we raise, we will decide the amount we will be filming, and will need to cast anywhere from 4 or 5 up to dozens’s of additional actors depending on the length of the script we will be working with (be it 10 minutes, or the full hour long pilot), not to mention background actors to fill the congregation and other locations. Additionally we will need to round out our crew and arrange for equipment rentals. We will look to the best, established professionals with experience filming for television. Fortunately our Producers have experience on a previous SAG production, and an extensive network through the strong Chicago filmmaking community.
Once we round out our cast and crew, we will move forward with production! We intend to film on location, and have already established locations for the church, bar, and home; there are of course challenges in filming on location, during alternate hours, and where we aren’t the only people using the location day in and day out. We will counter this with added attention to detail, and with an especially detail oriented script supervisor!
After we wrap filming, our producers will prepare an assembly cut, saving us a substantial amount of the editing expense; at the same time we will work with an editor, colorist, and sound designer experienced in network television standards to finish off the film, giving it those final touches necessary to really wow the viewer.
Finally, we will work to get it seen! This is an immense challenge… how will we make sure we get through doors to show networks our finished product? Throughout all stages, even now, we are working to reach out to networks, to make contacts, and get the word out about Rock And A Hard Place. We will continue this right up until we sign on the dotted line to get this to series!
A note of brilliance here that has to be credited to Keith Romine… and we should take this opportunity to point out if we haven’t already, Keith has extensive education and background in film, media, and psychology. Keith’s BA in Film is from top ranked UNLV, he continued with graduate studies in Film at prestigious top ranked Savannah College of Art and Design, and also has graduate level coursework in Media Psychology (for which he will receive his MS this summer). Keith insisted that no matter how short the material we film, we must tell a coherent story; we can’t just film a scene, or two scenes to show the quality of our work, we must re-work the script, and pull a solitary story out of the world we have created.
Why is this so important? This is crucial, because while we are working to promote the project to networks, we will also be able to submit the short form narrative to festivals around the world; gaining significant momentum and notoriety for the project. Some festivals are even geared toward and attended by network creative directors seeking projects to develop.
But what matters most? YOU, not only will you be helping us by pledging to make our goal... (and then by helping us to reach six times that goal!) but by helping us prove to networks that the most important piece of the puzzle is already in place: that YOU, the Fans, WANT to see this series!!
We definitely understand, and this isn't be a problem at all! We have an especially varied and unique set of perks; mostly because of the generosity of the stars attached to our project! Each has offered multiple items to be given as rewards!
FIRST, look to see if one of the items you want is in limited quantity. Choose the item most limited in quantity as the one you make your Pledge under, and simply make your total Pledge, under that item, for the total amount that covers all of the perks you would like to receive.
AFTER you complete your pledge, send us a message letting us know which perks you want to receive; this way we can note the account; Kickstarter makes this simple, we are able to make notes to each Backer's info, and if any of the items are in limited quantity we will make the adjustment on our side so your perks are all locked in!
Kickstarter is an all or nothing crowd-funding platform; if a project does not reach it's goal, you will NOT BE CHARGED, and the project will not be funded! At this time you are only pledging to make a contribution, you will not be charged until the campaign is complete and the funding goal is reached!
After two open casting calls, submissions are now CLOSED! After much thought, and an overwhelming number of requests, we have decided that we will make one exception: For our Kickstarter Backers ONLY at Pledge levels of $5 and higher, we will accept video auditions. We are also guaranteeing that all of these submissions will be watched by at least one of our Producers!
There are additional perk levels that can be chosen at $55, $90, and $120; if these specific perks are chosen we will provide you with feedback on your audition! One Producer will provide feedback if the $55 perk is chosen, Two Producers if the $90 perk is chosen, and all Three Producers if the $120 Perk is chosen!
Instructions for submitting your video audition are accessible in the Backers Only updates, accessible to you after you make your Pledge!
To submit your video audition only, no feedback, you may choose ANY perk at a $5 Pledge level or higher; all $5 and higher make you eligible to submit a video audition. To get feedback on your audition you must choose that specific perk at either the $55, $90, or $120 Pledge levels.
Instructions for submitting your video audition are accessible in the Backers Only updates, accessible to you ONLY AFTER you make your Pledge!
It is Update # 6, titled Video Audition! Dated Dec 20, 2013, and is for Backers Only. It contains the sides you will need to read; it is not necessary to have someone reading opposite you if you do not have anyone available! Additional instructions will come in your Thank You message which you will receive shortly after making your eligible Pledge.
To submit your video audition only, no feedback, you may choose ANY perk at a $5 Pledge level or higher; all $5 and higher Pledges make you eligible to submit one video audition. To get feedback on your audition you must choose that specific perk at either the $55, $90, or $120 Pledge levels.
I want to be able to see the finished film when it is completed and released… but the perk I want to choose doesn't say anything about the digital download?
The Digital Download is available as a stand alone Reward Perk at a Pledge level of $25.
The Digital Download is NOW INCLUDED (see UPDATE at the top of this project page) as a BONUS for any Reward Perk at a Pledge level of $30 or higher!
Why? --For some people, the Digital Download is the only thing they want, and we don't want them to have to pay for additional items if all they want is to see the finished film after it is released!
The perk I want is $35, it doesn't say anything about the Download? We assure you, if you have Pledged $35 or more, you WILL receive the Digital Download! We will offer it to you even if you haven't chosen any perk at all! We apologize for any confusion!
I chose the $25 set of autographed photos; this is the only perk I really want, but I would like the digital download too… do I have to pay $50? NO, increase your pledge to $30 with the set of autographed photos still chosen as your perk. ANYONE Pledging at $30 or higher will receive the Digital Download!!
The perk I want is $35, it doesn't say anything about the Download? Will I get the Digital Download or not?
We assure you, if you have Pledged $30 or more, you WILL receive the Digital Download! We will offer it to you at any Pledge $30 and over! The reason for this is that we cannot go back and make adjustments to a perk once it is chosen (other than quantity). So some have been updated and some have not; after the Kickstarter went live we were asked about the Digital Download by many people pledging $30 and up, and we decided we should include the Digital Download with every Pledge of $30 or more. We posted an ****UPDATE***** at the very top of this page, and this FAQ clarification to be sure to clear up any confusion! Sorry about that!
I want to be Thanked in the Credits of the finished film… but I don't want the $42 perk, I want one of the $35 perks!
All Backers Pledging at the $42 level and higher will get an Official Thank You in the Films Credits and on IMDB! If you have chosen a perk at a Pledge level under $42 you may keep that perk, simply raise your Pledge level to $42, with the perk you want still chosen; anyone Pledging $42 or more will be thanked in the films credits and on IMDB regardless of their chosen perk!
I changed my mind about the perk I wanted, AND/OR now I want to add another perk and now it just looks like I've made a mess of things… what do I do?
We assure you… you're not the first, nor will you be the last! This FAQ is here for a reason! Just be sure your total Pledge reflects all of the Rewards Perks you want, then send us a message, *although please do so immediately*, especially if one of the perks you want is in limited quantity, and we will set aside your desired perks in the desired quantities for you!
Don't worry, this is no problem at all, we are monitoring this page regularly, and many people have been asking about receiving multiple perks, and/or raising their Pledge to!
We will also be sending you a survey at the conclusion of the campaign, to make sure you are getting exactly the Rewards Perks that you wanted and Pledged towards!
