RECENT AND BREAKING NEWS!!STEPHEN BALDWIN talks THIS KICKSTARTER on NATIONAL FOX NEWS RED EYE with GREG GUTFELD, Saturday Jan 11!!
In this quirky sitcom recently widowed Pastor Darren Keaton (set to be played by Stephen Baldwin) is struggling to raise his young biracial daughter alongside his adversarial live in African-American Mother-In-Law when he inherits Hard Knocks Bar and Grill from a close friend and parishioner. Will his already dwindling congregation at Solid Rock Church support him in honoring his dear friends final wishes?
We are raising funds to cover the production of network television quality footage, and to take that footage to networks to pitch this project as a regular series. Keep in mind, we only receive the funds you are pledging after we meet our minimum goal of $50,000 by the end of our campaign! If we do not meet our goal, you will not be charged!
The first thing we will do at the conclusion of our successful campaign, is decide how much footage we can make. We anticipate that if we reach our goal of $50,000, we will be able to make a 10 minute (approximately) short film… Something that is extremely important to us is that the footage we film form a cohesive and quality story within the Rock And A Hard Place world. We won’t just film one or two scenes, we’ll take our pilot script, our series bible, and we’ll make a cohesive short film that will showcase our storytelling ability, our actors, our director, and will allow us not only to show this around to networks, but also submit to film festivals worldwide; everything we can do to draw more attention to the series.
Now, in a far better scenario, everyone will see just how great a story we have here, and we’ll double our goal, or more. With $100,000, I am very confident that we can make an incredible network television quality half hour series length pilot episode that would have the potential to be picked up straight to series, ready for pilot season!
Last but definitely not least, in a perfect world scenario, and with loads of help from the Rock And A Hard Place community, the Kickstarter community, the Independent Film community as a whole, and television fans everywhere that want to see this story come to life… If we reach the $300,000 or higher range, we will be able to make a network television quality, full hour-long series pilot, ready to air. For every extra bit of funds we raise, we will be able to make all that much higher quality an episode putting us closer to bringing Rock And A Hard Place to living rooms across the country – and around the world!

Risks and challenges
Risks and Challenges
We’ve already overcome our first, and biggest challenge; we have our star! Stephen and his agent, we can’t thank them enough, have been just incredible. Initially we contacted Stephen hoping the series would appeal to him enough to consider a cameo… As we talked further, we just threw it out there… would he be interested in a recurring role, and willing to sign a letter of intent? Absolutely. Finally as we began discussing what role, his agent expressed he would likely be interested in the lead, and after waiting on pins and needles for confirmation from Stephen we were able to verbally confirm that Stephen did want to play Pastor Keaton!
Additionally: we have cast Four Time Grammy Award winner, John Schlitt (lead singer Petra) in a recurring role, as the maintenance man at Solid Rock Church, Berkeley Clayborne as Pastor Keaton's daughter, Lindee Link in a yet to be announced 'top secret' role, Darren Marlar as Gary from GJ Construction Co. and Dan McGowan as Jeff from GJ Construction Co. Series Creator Darren Marlar and Comedian Dan McGowan are also writers on the series, Braxton Cosby as the Worship Leader of Solid Rock Church, while Grammy Nominee Bryan Duncan has created our theme song!
Once we reach our goal one of the first things we will do is get the ball rolling on our SAG contracts, insurance, and necessary legal matters. Next, depending on the amount we raise, we will decide the amount we will be filming, and will need to cast anywhere from 4 or 5 up to dozens’s of additional actors depending on the length of the script we will be working with (be it 10 minutes, or the full hour long pilot), not to mention background actors to fill the congregation and other locations. Additionally we will need to round out our crew and arrange for equipment rentals. We will look to the best, established professionals with experience filming for television. Fortunately our Producers have experience on a previous SAG production, and an extensive network through the strong Chicago filmmaking community.
Once we round out our cast and crew, we will move forward with production! We intend to film on location, and have already established locations for the church, bar, and home; there are of course challenges in filming on location, during alternate hours, and where we aren’t the only people using the location day in and day out. We will counter this with added attention to detail, and with an especially detail oriented script supervisor!
After we wrap filming, our producers will prepare an assembly cut, saving us a substantial amount of the editing expense; at the same time we will work with an editor, colorist, and sound designer experienced in network television standards to finish off the film, giving it those final touches necessary to really wow the viewer.
Finally, we will work to get it seen! This is an immense challenge… how will we make sure we get through doors to show networks our finished product? Throughout all stages, even now, we are working to reach out to networks, to make contacts, and get the word out about Rock And A Hard Place. We will continue this right up until we sign on the dotted line to get this to series!
A note of brilliance here that has to be credited to Keith Romine… and we should take this opportunity to point out if we haven’t already, Keith has extensive education and background in film, media, and psychology. Keith’s BA in Film is from top ranked UNLV, he continued with graduate studies in Film at prestigious top ranked Savannah College of Art and Design, and also has graduate level coursework in Media Psychology (for which he will receive his MS this summer). Keith insisted that no matter how short the material we film, we must tell a coherent story; we can’t just film a scene, or two scenes to show the quality of our work, we must re-work the script, and pull a solitary story out of the world we have created.
Why is this so important? This is crucial, because while we are working to promote the project to networks, we will also be able to submit the short form narrative to festivals around the world; gaining significant momentum and notoriety for the project. Some festivals are even geared toward and attended by network creative directors seeking projects to develop.
But what matters most? YOU, not only will you be helping us by pledging to make our goal... (and then by helping us to reach six times that goal!) but by helping us prove to networks that the most important piece of the puzzle is already in place: that YOU, the Fans, WANT to see this series!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
