A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
As seen on Apple Music's new series Planet of the Apps
"My mom was on the floor for at least 8 hours before I found her."
"I couldn't get to the phone because of my hip and I wasn't wearing my button."
"My button makes me feel old."
Almost everybody knows an elder who has fallen. These are some of the heartbreaking stories I hear everyday as a trauma surgeon. Unfortunately, the time it takes for someone to reach the emergency department can be the difference between life or death. When there are delays, patients and their families pay the price. For a physician who cares for this population, you keep thinking: It doesn't have to be this way.
Over 27,000 people over 65 die every year as a result of a fall in the US. As the population ages, the number continues to grow. In the marketplace, there are several pieces of technology that have been used over the years to assist the elder population in their ability to call for help in the event that they have fallen. Classic technology uses manual call buttons, whereas newer technology is deploying automatic fall detection. Despite this, some studies show that many elders still don't use the technology. Reasons include: It's unwieldy, it is unattractive, and/or it makes people feel old.
In 2015, my wife, and emergency physician, and I felt that a newer technology and a new model needed to be created. Our inspiration: Apple Watch®.
What if we could create an application for the newest, most advanced wrist-worn technology on the market that could do the following:
1. Call for help either by the press of a button OR automatically after it senses a fall.
2. Distinguish between low altitude falls (i.e. sitting) vs. higher altitude falls(i.e. standing) and call for different levels of assistance (Caregivers and/or a central monitoring agency*).
3. Be research-backed and patent-pending.
4. Has the potential for machine learning for personalized fall detection and later on, deep learning to more accurately detect falls.
5. Engage loved-ones and caregivers when help is truly needed.
Bottom line, we imagined it...and it is called: FallCall Now!
It is being built exclusively for Apple Watch® and iPhone®.
What we've accomplished:
To date, we have done the research, built the prototype, validated the algorithms, raised seed money through individual investors and a first round of crowdfunding, designed the screens, and are building the app.
What you can do to help:
With the funding we look to raise from our community, we will be able to accomplish the following:
1) Allow us to initially develop the machine learning filters to make personalized fall detection possible through the coverage of 2 weeks of engineering fees.
2) Perform a second round of in-house algorithm validation in preparation for launch.
Your contribution can turn FallCall Now into something that will create a new standard of communication following fall events. It will be there when you need it, and invisible when you don't.
Together, we can make it easier for future victims and their families get the help they need.

Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges are an inevitable part of building any app. Here are a few that we foresee and the steps we have taken to mitigate risk:
Apple App Store approval: This is always a possibility, however, based on our communications with Apple outreach, we view this as less likely.
FDA oversight: We have submitted formal presubmission inquiries regarding FDA oversight of our app. Based on our legal evaluation of the FDA responses, our app can be used in the non-medical consumer marketplace without required oversight at this time.
Non-detection of 100% of fall events: No automatic fall detector on the market will be able to detect 100% of fall events due to the variability of fall events. We plan to maximize the ability for the user/technology to call for help by: 1) Adding a manual call for help button; and 2) Adding the capability machine learning. This will be outlined in the the terms and conditions of FallCall Now.
