About

A festival of live art and interactive encounters across Leeds to reflect and celebrate the places, people, history and stories of our city. 16 - 25 November 2018

THE ASK

With just a few weeks to go before Compass Festival 2018 we need your help to reach our funding target. Your contribution will help us keep the festival FREE for our audiences. At Compass Festival we bring world-class artists to Leeds, work with them over several months to make original work especially for the city and all this is presented free to the public. 40% of our 10,000 audience in 2016 were new to the arts – and loved it! - largely because we put amazing work in public places and made it free.

And the cost of keeping it free is considerable, for example the artists’ fees for this year are £60,000, then there’s travel and accommodation. We’ve booked 108 hotel nights so if you pledge £40 that will provide one artist a bed for the night. The average cost of train travel per artist is £60. The brochure costs £4,000 to design and print. With only the tiniest of core funding, we have successfully raised most of the budget already from among others: Arts Council England, Leeds City Council, Leeds Beckett University, Leeds BID and Live Art UK, through Diverse Actions.

We just need another £4,000 to reach our target. Can you help us make this a brilliant festival for everyone to enjoy?

What we already have:

  • We have an incredible line up of artists
  • All our participants and champions are in place
  • All our venue partners are on board
  • All our volunteers are recruited
  • We are raring to go.

Please pledge today. Our rewards will bring you closer to the festival with unique experiences you can’t get anywhere else. There’s a limited number, so pledge now!

2018 Programme

Ten days of free live art events, 16 - 25 November, designed to prompt personal responses and chains of interaction. Locations range from water taxis to courtrooms, galleries and bus stations to a street where you live, or one just like it…

This year’s festival is the most ambitious yet with three major new commissions from Scottee, Jack Tan and Redhawk Logistica as well as pieces from Etheridge and Persighetti, French and Mottershead, Debbie Kent and Alisa Oleva, Sarah Caputo and Brenda Unwin, Bethany Wells, Rosana Cade.

WHAT IS COMPASS FESTIVAL?

Since 2011 we’ve been making the biennial Compass Festival in Leeds UK – this will be our fourth. What’s so special about it? We ask world-class artists to spend a long time in the city working with people in Leeds to make unique projects about things that matter to them. For example, Etheridge & Persighetti worked with traders and shoppers in Leeds Kirkgate Market for nearly two years helping them lead a series of personal tours for the public.

Our projects are interactive which means that you don’t just watch something, you take part in it and make it happen. We put work in public places so everyone can see and take part. We explore ideas that matter to us all and encourage connections between strangers. We invite you to think, feel, play and see the world from a different angle. It is a local festival with national and international significance.

In 2017 we were awarded the “Extraordinary Festival'' EFFE Label (EFFE is the scheme for the recognition of Europe’s remarkable festivals by the European Festivals Association):

“Compass makes a compelling and powerful case for a Live Art festival that manages to reach out beyond its potentially limited audience with work that is risky and challenging” EFFE jury adjudication

“Compass reminds us how culture can give a city its soul” Cllr Lucinda Yeadon Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council 2016

Here are a few examples of what people have loved about Compass Festival:

‘Brilliant, beautiful, thought provoking and very funny’ ‘Fantastic event – loved the fact that it was silent so we were able to digest it and make our own thoughts...’ ‘A great way to step out of the regular city life and discover a new perspective of it...’   ‘Brightened up a very wet day. Thank you.’ ‘Lovely experience, enjoyed the communal atmosphere and the informality of the performances’ ‘I feel so happy I could cry’

Risks and challenges

Producing a festival of this scale and ambition is a long-term labour of love. To nurture the artists and their projects, identify our venue partners and participants and make sure we have the budget in place, we’ve been working on this since January 2017. We are almost ready to go and with this last piece of the funding jigsaw in place we’ll be able to present the best Compass Festival yet.

If we don’t reach our target we may have to consider charging admission to festival events and risk excluding people who would have taken a chance on a new experience. WE REALLY DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

Any contribution you can make will help a lot and remember, IF WE DON’T REACH OUR TARGET WE CANNOT RECEIVE ANY OF THE MONEY PLEDGED.

And the best help you can give, aside from pledging, is to spread the word among your friends and networks. Thank you!
