Parent Pairings is a wine guide for the fun of parenting - from Moscato for that first date night to Pinot Noir for diaper blowouts...
Parent Pairings: A Wine Guide for Parenthood
A Wine Pairing Guide for What Exactly?
Most people have a general notion that some wines pair better with certain foods (beginner: red wine with meat; advanced: Moscato with antipasto). As any parent can tell you, there are some days when you really look forward to that glass of wine after you put the kids to bed. This book offers some delicious wine recommendations to pair with the many milestones of parenting, from the best wine to have on your first 'date night' out, all the way up to the best glass of wine to have with your child when they turn 21...
What do you know about wine? (or parenting for that matter?)
Cheryl Durzy - Founder of MommyJuice Wines
Cheryl is the creator of MommyJuice Wines and Vice President of Clos LaChance Winery in San Martin, CA. She lives and breathes wine and actually knows what 'oaky' means when talking about wine. She's regularly featured in publications ranging from NY Magazine to CNN. Like most moms, she balances a crazy work life while raising 2 kids and a husband.
Mike Nemeth - Founder of Baby Daddy Books
Mike is a Pulitzer prize eligible children's book author and founder of Baby Daddy Books. While his wife was pregnant with their first child, he participated in a disturbing new trend known as a 'couple's baby shower.' Faced with a pile of sappy children's books, he set out to write books that parents would actually want to read, starting with Daddy's Favorite Juice: the bottles in the fridge that aren't for you. He also drinks wine, sometimes out of a box.
Tasting Notes for the Book
Parent Pairings is a collaborative effort between Cheryl and Mike. There are 16 different parenting milestones featured in the book, each with a specific wine recommendation and tips/suggestions on how to best enjoy your rare escape from parenting.
The book starts with the best Baby Making wine, followed by a series of early baby milestones. Some that you look forward to, like Baby's First Food, and others that you weren't prepared for, like Baby's First Swear Word.
Parent Pairings isn't just for new parents - we also include wine pairing recommendations for your child's first driving lesson, all the way up to the best glass of wine to share WITH your child (when they're of legal age, of course!).
What better way to describe the book than by sharing a page from it! Here's a draft layout of the 'Blow Out' page from the book.
Excerpt from page 13:
Blow Outs. If you’re reading this page, please take a minute and double check that you’ve washed your hands.
Any ‘blow out’ is reason enough to take a break from parenting. Maybe you ended up with the wrong kind of tie-dye onesie... Or it was closer to your little one starring in their own twisted version of Steven King’s Carrie...
Either way, it’s going in the poop journal. The first big “up the back, down the sides” blow out is often a little surprising—and it almost always happens away from home with no extra diapers or clothing anywhere. Ugh. It will be painful, but it will get cleaned up. Your baby will go home, get in the bath and go to sleep all clean and happy like it never happened. And then do it again tomorrow.
In between, we recommend: Burgundy Pinot Noir
A poopy anything calls for an earthy, funky, barnyardy (yes, that is an actual wine descriptor term—smells like barnyard, otherwise known as animal poop) wine. Traditional Pinot Noir from the Burgundian region in France does the trick. A medium bodied red wine, Burgundy is pretty versatile when it comes to food pairings.
Each page also features a quick reference guide, including a 'hangover score' relative to the alcohol content of the wine. Also, a chance to record the date of your cherished blow out milestone (don't forget to keep the cork!).
We met on Kickstarter (really!)
In 2012, Mike launched a Kickstarter campaign for his second book: Mommy's Favorite Juice - the first kid's book ever about wine. Cheryl discovered the project and became a backer, ultimately seeing her wine featured in the book (and to the best of our knowledge, the first wine product placement ever sold for a kid's book). The two have stayed in contact since the project and began talking about Parent Pairings in early 2013. They've yet to meet in person and are faced with a tough decision as to whether Cheryl should travel to Columbus, OH in the winter or if Mike should visit a sunny vineyard in California.
We're here on Kickstarter because we're ready to put this book out in a beautiful hardcover edition as opposed to a cheaper, print on demand style paperback. $3,500 will cover our printing costs for the initial production run of books, made here in the USA. Mascot Books will handle the work and Mike has done 3 other hardcover books with Mascot already, so we know that they do great work!
Cheryl and Mike have written the book and are finishing up the illustrations and layout. Mike is working with the same illustrator from 2 of his other books, Veronica Jane. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, we'll be ready to send this book to the printers by the end of July. It can take 4-8 weeks for the first production run to be complete, so we expect to receive our first copies at some point in September.
Our backers will be the FIRST to receive copies of Parent Pairings in mid-late September. By October, the book will be available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and common book wholesalers that serve smaller stores across the country.
Reward Info - No Wine :-(
Sorry folks - we can't give out wine... Alcohol rewards are prohibited by Kickstarter. You can stop by CVS in California or visit MommyJuice to learn how to buy Cheryl's wine.
However, we are offering some awesome rewards, starting with signed copies of Parent Pairings and Mike's other books, Mommy's Favorite Juice and Daddy's Favorite Juice.
The next level of rewards includes some awesome merchandise to make the other moms in the neighborhood jealous of your style (who else has MommyJuice to-go cups?). If you've got an event coming up, a complete set of books and glasses would make for the perfect Baby Shower Party - AND Cheryl will provide you with custom wine recommendations.
Finally, for those backers that really want to show their support, we're offering some incredible experiences at Clos LaChance winery and neighboring CordeValle Resort. You'll have to be responsible for transportation to beautiful San Martin, California, so these rewards might best be suited for San Francisco area backers. For a limited number of backers, we'll provide a behind the scenes tour of Clos LaChance winery. Enjoy a detailed tour of the Clos LaChance property, including the production and hospitality facilities. Learn from one of our Estate Sommeliers about the entire wine making process from the crush pit to the catwalks in the cellar. Stroll through the beautiful gardens, our demonstration vineyard and the Mulberry Grove. Stick around afterwards for a relaxing evening.
Our highest level reward includes a two night stay at the CordeValle resort that is attached to Clos LaChance. We're planning the book launch party for a weekend in November and you'll be a featured guest of honor. Please contact us at email@example.com for more details if you're interested in this opportunity.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, backing this project IS different than buying the book at Barnes & Noble in 6 months. Cheryl and Mike have already invested considerable time in the content of the book, but we're here because this book is NOT yet in print.
We're very confident that this book will be printed and released on the schedule described above, but there is always the chance that there will be printing delays. I have faced printing delays in one of my previous three books and it added three weeks to the originally scheduled production.
If we do encounter printing delays, we will communicate any schedule updates to our backers. While we feel that this is unlikely to happen, the potential impact would only be a delay in providing our backers with the book. Unlike more complicated technology projects that face risks with production, etc... books face fewer challenges as they go from Kickstarter into print.
