What better way to dial it back a few years and do it just like our rock & roll heroes from yesterday… a concept album with 2 hours of music!!!
We've only been around a short while but we've learned a lot about the music industry over the last couple of years. We've spoken to the biggest record label - they called us, we didn't call them. TV producers have contacted us about making reality shows because of the family-thing we have going on. A couple of big-time recording engineers have inquired about working with the band.
In the end we finally realized that it's all about one thing to them - CONTROL - and money of course. Let's not be kidding ourselves here. Controlling us and making money is what this whole world is about, not just the music business. Unfortunately when you mix the art of making music with the business of making money, something very important gets lost… the human spirit.
That's why we have once again turned to the only ones that matter to us for this project - our fans. This concept album means a great deal to us because it's a story about the world we live in today and the burning desire many of us have to change it. If everything goes well our plan is to step into the studio this spring to begin recording and then release the album in the summer of 2017.
We've always felt a very special connection with our fans. They know our music means a lot more than sex, drugs and rock & roll. Our music has an energy we can't describe - a very powerful energy that can change people. Our fans have felt it and we want the rest of the world to feel it too.
This journey started more than a decade ago. Actually scratch that - It started a lot earlier. Josh is the oldest member of the band, born back in 1994. Then came his cousin Andrea, her brother David and finally their sister Sara. The musical part of the journey started a few short years later in 2006 with the formation of Motion Device taking place in 2010.
The band quickly drew world-wide attention covering rock and metal classics from yesterday on Youtube. They built up a steady and loyal fan base through the years and were praised by many famous musicians including Alice Cooper, Steve Vai, Amy Lee, Zakk Wylde, Dee Snider, Mark Tremonti, Dave Navarro and Kim Mitchell.
As a result of their online success Motion Device has also built a huge social media following over the years. The fan base continues to grow on a daily basis with over 78,000 fans on Youtube, Facebook and Twitter.
Covering songs was sweet and a great way to get our musical chops down, but the band's true destiny was about to unfold…
We found out about crowd-funding a few years ago. It was pretty clear that the music industry was going through a lot of changes and the urge to start playing our own music was taking over. It was hard to get people to see past the band member's young ages so we thought it was time to put our fans to the test. Safe to say our fans passed the test, and then some.
In 2014 our fans successfully funded our debut EP 'Welcome to the Rock Revolution'. That was our first experience with Kickstarter and we were shocked to find out how much our original material meant to our fans. Fast forward a year later to 2015 and our fans funded our first full-length album called 'ETERNALIZE' - in just over 48 hours!!
We even managed to reach our stretch goal and play our first gig in the U.S.A. at The Brother's Lounge in the rock & roll capital of Cleveland, Ohio. Fans drove and flew from many miles away to meet us and see the band perform live - it was a truly humbling experience.
This new album will push the boundaries for everyone involved because it's so much bigger than the previous projects. Our sound has really matured over the last couple of years and we can't wait to record the new material. The fact that it's a double-CD concept album will make the ride that much more interesting for both us and the fans.
'Wide Awake' could very well be the album that really changes everything for Motion Device. Click on the video above to hear us working on a new track called 'Warrior'. You can check out more video clips on our Facebook page...
The funds for this project go directly towards recording, mixing and mastering the music for our 'Wide Awake' album. For more than a year now, we've been working on music for the album. Somewhere along the way we realized that there's a lot of material so we decided to turn it into a double-CD album. The idea of recording a concept album was always there for us but the songs just kept coming and we really wanted to give our fans as much music as we could - they deserve it!!
Our experience in the studio during the recording of our previous releases will help a great deal this time around. We've already taken the time to search out the right studio and the best people to work with and we think we've found a great mix.
While most of the funding goes towards the making of the actual album, the remainder of the funds will go to merchandising and rewards for our backers.
Check out some of the unique and exclusive rewards we have for our backers...
STRETCH GOALS?!? THAT's when some really cool things can happen!! Keep a look-out for our Kickstarter updates and posts on our Facebook page for details about stretch goals. We would be honoured and so thankful to be in the position to do some of the really incredible things we dream about, things only big-name artists are able to do, but let's start with the primary goal - getting the funds for our new album.
Risks and challenges
Besides the risk of getting the actual funds from our fans and reaching our goal, we strongly feel that we're ready for the next chapter in our journey and that we can overcome any obstacles we might encounter. We've already overcome so much just to get to this point, but again we have our fans to thank for that.
There will always be challenges getting a great album recorded in this day and age but the difference makers are the ones who believe in Motion Device - those that have been with us since the beginning and those that are discovering our music everyday. That's why we put the power to make this album a reality in our fans' capable hands. The experience of writing and recording our first two projects will come in real handy when it comes time to record and release 'Wide Awake'. We're confident the quality and production of the music on this album will be on a whole new level.
Risks and challenges are part of the music business but that won't stop us from doing what we came here to do... CREATE MUSIC.
