A few months ago we were doing what we loved to do most – writing and playing new material in our cozy jam space – the same place where the foundation of our three previous albums was built. As we grew more and more excited about the new tunes, something changed. Not sure exactly when or how it happened. We suddenly realized that another album might not be the best thing for Motion Device right now. As we continued to write, record, and create new vibrations, it dawned upon us… we need to do what our fans, especially the ones from the U.S., have been asking for – A TOUR.
Our biggest shows to date have mainly been the result of previous crowd-funding campaigns coinciding with album releases. When ‘Eternalize’ was recorded in 2015 we travelled to Cleveland, Ohio to play our first show in the U.S. Last summer we premiered our ‘Wide Awake’ album, in its entirety at the Hard Rock Club in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada. It was located right outside the border that divides America and Canada. We tried our best to give more of our U.S. fans a chance to see and meet the band.
This time around the focus is strictly on playing more shows for our fans south of the border. Yeah, we know, it’s only three cities, but it’s a start. We chose Indianapolis, IN (Sunday, August 12th), Atlanta, GA (Wednesday, August 15th) and New York, NY (Saturday, August 18th) because we thought it made the most sense geographically. We would like nothing more than to do an extended tour and travel across the whole continent, and although we truly believe that day will come, we’re not quite there yet.
For now we decided we’ll do what’s best for us and more importantly what’s best for our fans – a Motion Device ‘High Road’ Tour’ – and as usual, we’re doing it our way, through Kickstarter.
All of our music to date has been made possible by our fans through this incredible crowd-funding platform, Kickstarter. From our debut EP in 2014, to our first full-length album release in 2015 and our double-CD concept album in 2017, every single original song on those albums was made possible by the backers that believed in Motion Device.
Over the past few years we've had the opportunity to work with some amazing recording engineers and producers, spending quality time in the most incredible state-of-the-art recording studios in Toronto. It’s really true – studio life is sooooo sweet!!
Along with the albums, Kickstarter funding has also given us the chance to continue to put out more and more music videos on Youtube, which has played a huge role in getting our music heard all over the world.
The most important reward offered in this project is of course… tickets to the shows!! Not only can you get tickets, but there’s also a load of other exclusive rewards available including V.I.P. Meet & Greet packages, cover songs chosen by you, official ‘High Road’ gig banners, signed Motion Device gear and memorabilia and some very special rewards for warriors with deep pockets – you can even be the main sponsor of our whole tour.
PLEASE NOTE: All tickets and V.I.P. Meet & Greet passes will be emailed to you a week or two after the campaign is over. Official tickets and V.I.P. packages will be waiting for you when you arrive at the show.
Booking gigs in the U.S. can be quite a task for an independent Canadian band. Our funding goal has been set to help cover the following costs: working permits for the band, truck rentals, gas, food and accommodations for the week long journey, and the most important part – renting three kick-ass venues so our fans can finally experience Motion Device LIVE!!
The Vogue in Indianapolis is a historic venue that has hosted some amazing artists from the past and present. It’s the largest of the three venues (850 capacity) but for good reason – we think it’s central to a lot of other cities with Motion Device fans like Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Cleveland and more. We know it’s a bit of a drive but we would like nothing more than to see as many fans as possible at these shows.
Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta actually has three rooms to choose from. Fortunately for us we’ve booked ‘The Music Room’ which holds 300 people. If you’re from Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, or even Texas or Florida (where we know there’s a ton of MD fans), this will be a great chance for you to come out and rock with the band.
Last but not least, for the final show we rented The Cutting Room in New York City. This incredible venue holds 550 people and we literally fell in love with it as soon as we checked out some online pics. We knew it would be the perfect place to finish off this mini tour. Not only is it a great location for all our fans from the Big Apple, it’s also a great opportunity to see us if you live in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington.
Please note that if you’re one of those fans that has the time and opportunity to come to more than one show on this tour, all you have to do is increase your one pledge to include the dollar amount for the other tickets, meet & greets, etc. After doing that, make sure to message or email us to let us know which shows you will be attending. This is important because Kickstarter only permits one pledge per project – you always have the option to change the amount you’re donating, as long as it’s the same OR more than the amount required for the reward you’ve chosen.
The other part we absolutely cherish about live shows is connecting with our fans. It's hard to believe how large our fan base has become over the last few years. It becomes very real when we meet fans that tell us how much the band means to them and how strongly they connect to the music we write - that means everything to us.
We never really know the effect we have on people until we witness it first hand. The music has always come first for us, but without your passionate support who knows where we would be today... we truly appreciate each and every one of you.
When we get the opportunity to meet you on the road we are simply overwhelmed with gratitude. The experience truly reinforces the reason we created Motion Device – to have a positive effect on the human race and do our very best to make this place we call earth a better place.
THANK YOU to all our fans and warriors who have travelled hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to see us… we hope to get the chance to meet many more of you on this ‘High Road’ tour.
As most of you already know Motion Device is an unsigned independent band. Opportunities to sign with record labels, some small and some very big, have been presented to us in the past. As much as we’re all serious about creating long lasting music careers out of this, we know that the best thing for the band at this time is to stay independent. Integrity means everything to us and being controlled by a record label is not on our bucket list of things to do – not now and not ever. We’re perfectly content and completely satisfied doing this thing on our own and counting on the ones that matter most... our fans... to help us reach new heights.
For now we hope to build our own little empire, through the kind of blood sweat and tears that’s necessary in doing things our own way and hopefully, the right way. We've always put our faith and trust in the people that appreciate our music and that’s all that matters to us. Although this world sometimes seems bent on knocking us down, our commitment to continue to create the sounds you want to hear remains… ‘Unbroken’.
A lot of us, especially here on Kickstarter, take some things for granted and one of those things is assuming that everyone knows how this campaign works – well for those of you who don't, a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign is an ALL or NOTHING proposition.
Project creators like ourselves seek out backers to help us reach a pre-determined funding goal so we can provide you with a product or service that we feel is worth your hard earned dollars. In our case it's about a three city concert tour in the U.S.A.
It's important for all our backers to understand that your pledges and donations only count if we reach our goal – if the funding goal is not reached then you don't pay a dime and all potential pledges are null and void. There's absolutely no risk to you. However, if we DO reach our goal your donation to this project becomes official when the campaign is completed. We then begin processing all rewards and the Motion Device 'High Road' Tour becomes reality... and that's what we're all counting on.
We all know that Kickstarter is about one main thing - funding. With the help of our fans, it gives bands like Motion Device an opportunity to do some pretty amazing things that would have never been possible years ago.
Although the main focus is reaching our funding goal, there’s always the chance that things can really take off. Besides the funding goal itself, just as important to us is bringing as many fans as possible to come see us on this ‘High Road’ tour. It would be a dream to see these three shows packed with fans because in all honesty, besides festivals, the most people we’ve ever played for has been what… maybe 75 max? We don’t have to tell you what a wicked vibe we would all get from seeing 300 or 500 or even 800 people in one place just to see Motion Device. Not only would it jump start the next stage of our journey, creating more shows, in more cities, and more countries… but who knows… it might even be enough for another album in 2019 – it really is all up to YOU.

Risks and challenges
It would be safe to say that the risks and challenges involved with this particular project are very different than any we’ve encountered before.
For obvious reasons attracting backers to our previous projects was straight forward – we wanted to record an album, so the backers donated to the project on various degrees, with the main goal resulting in new music from Motion Device for all fans involved. In those cases, where the backers lived or came from didn’t really matter, the project was geared towards all our fans all over the globe.
This ‘High Road’ tour is unlike any other crowd-funding campaign we’ve launched in the past. It’s mostly for our fans in America. Even more so, the tour is especially for people who live near any of the three cities we’ve chosen. That really cuts back on the chance of anyone else who can’t make the shows becoming a backer. Regardless, all the rewards for this project are available to anyone, anywhere in the world. Those fans might not be able to attend a show, but they can still support the tour and help secure the band's future by donating to the campaign. That’s the reason we included a lot of additional exclusive rewards so everyone has a chance to get in on the campaign and get something very special in return.
In the end, risks and challenges are what most people make them to be. We, on the other hand, believe in this project – we believe in ourselves, we believe in our music and most importantly... we believe in our fans.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
