Couch surfing, sleeping at the office or even living in a car -- many smart, hardworking women are hitting bottom in this difficult economy.
Girl Powerless is a comedy web series about one such woman, Amanda Dietz, who is forced to sell all of her possessions and move back in with her parents after a long bout of unemployment. Although she is grateful to have a loving home keeping her off the streets, Amanda is living with rules at 32 years old. (Her mom and stepdad are Mormon and so she keeps her coffee habit confined to her bedroom, concealing the smell with incense.) Returning to her roots means having to confront how different life has turned out than what she dreamed as a teen. The blow of failure is soon softened when Amanda discovers friends in different but similarly femasculated situations.
“Femasculated?” Well, men get the word “emasculated” when life beats them down but there is no similar word for women. So we made one up. Because sometimes women feel that way, too.
Why does the world need another web series?
There's simply not enough portrayals of femasculation on TV or in the movies. (Now that we’ve made up a new word, we’re gonna work it.) Usually, when a scripted female character feels like a loser, the writers toss her a man and POOF -- all her problems are supposed to be solved. But in Girl Powerless, our lead character wants to solve her own problems, not rely on some poor guy to be her mantidote.
What are you doing?
We are going to raise enough money to film our first few episodes. We’d like our web series to have the look and feel of a regular TV show. This budget will allow for quality in our footage, sound and locations. The people involved in this series have worked in network comedies, web series, feature films, and are all professionals in the business. Also, the number of episodes in Season One will depend on how much money we raise.
What happens if you don’t meet your goal amount?
Per Kickstarter rules, we don’t receive anything if we fall short of our goal and our project will not be funded. You also will not be charged if we don’t meet our goal.
Where can I learn more about the project?
Please visit our official website, www.girlpowerless.com where you can find more about the series, our blog, a behind-the-scenes look at our Kickstarter video, updates as we cast our lead actors and bios on all of the wonderful people working on this project. If you want to contact us, you can go to our website. We will quickly get back to you! Also, we are on Facebook:
Is the webseries going to be a musical like your Kickstarter video?
No. We wanted to do a takeoff on a “Bye Bye Birdie” type song as a fun way to show you who we are. Plus, we thought it would be funny in the age of the internet to show people getting the word out using old rotary phones.
We filmed our video in one day, with the DP acting as the whole crew, and mostly in front of a greenscreen we set up in the living room of a friend’s apartment. The webseries will be shot on location in various places in Los Angeles with a bigger crew, more equipment, etc. - like a real, contemporary TV show.
Can you exceed your goal?
YES! This would be truly wonderful! This is only the start of our series. We have set our goal at the low end so that if we exceed it, we can make even more episodes. The more episodes we make, the more likely we are able to find permanent distribution and backing to support our series for seasons to come!
Is my pledge amount publicly displayed?
No. Only you and the project creator will be able to see your pledge amount.
If I donate, when can I redeem the incentive?
All incentives will only happen if our goal is met. If we do meet our goal, immediately after our deadline we will start to manufacture and ship all merchandise directly to you. The DVDs, however, can only happen after we film the episodes.
What if I don’t want the incentive, I just want to support?
No problem, there is a button that you can select if you don’t want the reward.
Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made?
YES! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.
Can I gift an incentive to someone else?
Absolutely! If you would like to donate to our web series but give the reward to someone as a gift, go through all the normal process of making a donation in your name. For billing purposes, this action must be in your name. After our deadline, we will send a message to you on Kickstarter. (It will be forwarded to the email address you provided) Please reply with all the person’s information that is to receive the reward. We will make sure they are the person who receives the reward.
I'm not in the US. Can I still pledge to Girl Powerless?
Yes. You can pledge from anywhere.
