This dynamic book takes readers along the Iditarod Trail with the official photographer of the 1,000-mile race as he follows mushers and dog teams; includes details and backstories of “how I got the photo.”
Hi, I’m Jeff Schultz, a professional photographer living in Anchorage, Alaska, since 1978. Mostly I shoot corporate, editorial, and stock photography. And I love nothing better than combining Alaskan adventures with photography.
Early in my career, I was blessed to have met Joe Redington Sr., known as the “Father of the Iditarod.” I had no idea what the Iditarod was back then. He invited me to get involved in the 1,000-mile event, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, as a volunteer photographer.
I shot my first race in 1981. The next year, the Iditarod Trail Committee invited me to become the race’s “official” photographer, and since 1982, I have more than 50,000 Iditarod images in my cataloged files. Over the years, hundreds of my Iditarod photos have been published in magazines, brochures, advertisements and in several books, Yet, I had never conceived a book on my own, until now.
I wanted to produce an Iditarod book with the photos and stories from my three-plus decades of experiences, sharing the people, dogs, and trail that few others would ever see or experience. That is what Chasing Dogs is all about.
Before, during, and after the race, a myriad of logistics require effort by thousands of volunteers, all doing their part to get the dog teams to Nome. In this book, I show the behind-the-scenes work that does not get the media attention I think is deserved. Besides that, the mushers travel 1,000 miles of historic and breathtaking trail—most of it unseen by the average person. I’ve traveled the entire trail via airplane and snowmachine more than thirty times. I want to show and tell the world all about those trail miles, beautiful scenery, adventures, and behind-the-scenes tales in this book.
In three decades of photographing the race, I’ve experienced a lifetime of adventures. I want to tell some of those great stories, too—camping in life-threatening cold, digging out my snowmachine, flying through narrow canyons with expert pilots, surviving a crash that nearly took my life. From the countless hours I’ve waited on teams to show up, to hairy adventures of traveling by plane and snowmachine, I want the reader to see Iditarod as I have.
I’d been thinking about this book idea for years, but I started it in earnest in the fall of 2013 by enlisting the services of a team of professionals I know and trust, those with Iditarod experience, to make it the best book it could be. A great editor, photo editor, designer, and production manager. We are on our way!
At this point, I’ve paid the team their down payments, and the book is almost complete and in the designer’s hands. The immediate challenge is paying for printing.
If you choose to help make this book project a reality, you will receive one of several reward packages. The money from Kickstarter will pay for the printing, shipping, and the remaining balances owed to those working on the book. It is scheduled to go on press in late March, so that I can include some new images from the 2014 race.
We expect the book to be in our hands the first week or so in May.

What’s the difference between the $29.95 book, and the special edition version with a $125 pledge?
The $29.95 version is softbound and will be available for purchase in bookstores, online, and elsewhere as a trade edition. The special hard-cover, clothbound edition will only be available to those who contribute to the Kickstarter campaign or specially purchased by Iditarod race sponsors. Hardbound copies will not be available for sale to the public.
Now that I've backed the Chasing Dogs project at the $65 level or above, how do I tell you how I'd like to be acknowledged in the book?
After the funding period has ended (March 20), we will contact each backer to obtain shipping information and other details regarding your reward. We’ll ask you to list your name as you would like to see it appear in the book.

Risks and Challenges: Publishing a photo book includes the risk of delay. My production manager has more than twenty-five years of experience in dealing with the production and printing challenges involved in making great photo books.
