Britain is rife with crime and you are leading one of the country's five most notorious historical gangs, competing for dominance over London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.

You and your fellow players vie for control over the major cities of Britain by spreading your mobs, collecting payouts, and using secret intelligence to advance your influence. In a game where luck decides little, carefully pick who you cut deals with as betrayals can lurk behind the next card.

One thing is certain amongst the Gangs of Britannia - trust is slowly built but quickly broken...

Gangs of Britannia is an exciting 3-5 player game, that has been known to test even the strongest bonds between players, whether friends or family. Based in pre-modern Britain, the game relies on unique Prisoner's Dilemma mechanics that determine whether all come out on top or somebody gets swindled.

Rise to the top of the heap by using secret intelligence to your own benefit and to your enemies' demise, and always remember, dealing and deceiving are woven into the fabric of the game, so play your cards wisely. Do you think you can tell when your friend is lying? Is that innocent smile just a ruse to corner your piece of the pie? There is only one way to find out.

Gangs of Britannia - Game Board
Gangs of Britannia - Game Board

TYPE: Competitive, 3-5 players, 45mins to 1hr15mins.

THEME: Gangsters. Set in a time of British crime empires where wearing flat caps was the rule rather than the exception.

WIN: By controlling the most territory and having the largest hoard of crime money.

IN SHORT: A game that incorporates a unique Prisoner's Dilemma mechanic, secret information and tactically placing your mobs to strengthen your hold over five British cities.

We've spent by far the most time on testing our game inside and out (and trying to break it). Whether on holiday, at games conventions, board game cafes or general play sessions, we've had a huge number of people scrutinise our game and play it (thank you to everyone!).

We've spent by far the most time on testing our game inside and out (and trying to break it). Whether on holiday, at games conventions, board game cafes or general play sessions, we've had a huge number of people scrutinise our game and play it (thank you to everyone!).

But don't just take our word for it! See what other people think (Review starts at 14:02)...

In June 2017, we went to the UK Games Expo and had over 50 members of the public play test it! Here are some of the comments and scores (from our feedback forms):

Average overall rating: 8.4 (out of 10)

A few select comments:

'I bickered with my wife all the way through the game. Arguably that made it more fun. Great stuff!'

'The high levels of player interaction made it very enjoyable'

'Really quick and easy to learn, and I loved the gameplay'

If we are fortunate enough to fund successfully and go beyond our campaign target, we have a few planned strechgoals to allow us to include additional content and upgrade the quality.

Our priority is to produce a high quality game that plays well and feels good. As such we have picked stretch goals that spread from adding extra content to upgrading game components.

We’ve kept things simple and any stretch goals achieved during the campaign will be included in every version of the game.

Here is a quick gameplay summary video so you get an idea of the mechanics of the game. If you prefer a text explanation of the main mechanics, we've written a short overview below the video:

Deal or Deceive

This is the game's very own Prisoner's Dilemma that works whether there are just two players contesting a city or five players vying for control (a contested city is a city with two more gangs present in it). For each contested city, each participating gang places either a Deal card or a Deceive card face down. Once all cards are placed, they are then revealed city by city, and the resulting actions are played out.

Typically when all gangs deal, they share a financial reward of £3,000. If a gang deceives whilst the other gang(s) deal, the deceiving gang gets to remove one of the other player's mob meeples from that city and replace it with one of their own. Two or more deceivers result in the deceivers having to remove a mob maple each from that city. The trick with deal or deceive is to choose wisely whether you want to deceive someone. As soon as you deceive them, you get one up on them for sure, but the trust is gone and they won't be dealing with you anytime soon...

Secret Intel Cards

Each player gets secret information about bonuses and penalties on the board's cities. These bonuses and penalties apply to everyone, but only the player holding the card knows what the exact effect is. What is available for everyone to see is what city your intel card will apply to, as you will have also picked up a city card and placed it face up in front of you for everyone to see (as in the animation below):

Your job is to use your intel cards to exploit and mislead your opponents. Fellow players will be watching your moves and actions into and out of specific city to gauge whether your intel card is good or bad.

Communal and Gang Specific Upgrades

Throughout the game, players are given the opportunity to purchase upgrades that give them bonuses (e.g. extra mobs, access to other player's secret intel cards etc.). Each gang also has a specific upgrade with powerful bonuses that is only available to them.

Picking your gang at the start of the game becomes a much more strategic move than just picking the colour you like best.

Part of the reason we have started a Kickstarter project is to get a professional illustrator on board. We are fortunate to have Jason Carr working with us to make Gangs Of Britannia look really good. We have had the awesome help of Giorgio De Michele and Tautvydas Lokis who have created the game board, player aids, the box and rules in shape (although they'll all be touched up). What we are missing is the majority of the card artwork (intel cards, upgrade cards etc).

We will be uploading images of card artwork that Jason will be working on  as the campaign progresses. Below it some of his work in progress for the revised upgrade cards.

We are partnering with some excellent fulfilment partners to get the game to you in great condition without breaking the bank.

We have negotiated to keep the shipping costs as low as possible without jeopardising the packaging materials (no one wants a damaged box). So we have created the following three tiers for shipping:

NO ADDITIONAL SHIPPING FOR PICK UP IN LONDON

If you would like to pick up the game in London (UK), we have set 'American Samoa' as a free shipping zone. So just select American Samoa and you can come and collect it from us in person. If you do actually happen to live in American Samoa, you may consider yourself lucky as you'll get your game shipped for free :)

Customs - Most international backers will not be hit by customs or duty charges. However, for some countries they may charge duty on top which is not under our control. We have done a lot of research into this so do ask us if your country gets duty slapped on top.

We will ship games to the EU and US without any customs charges.

In late October 2017 we will be hitting up Spiel in Essen, Germany over 4 days (October 26-29th). If you are around, come visit us in Hall 7 - Booth 7F120. We will have prototype copies of the game which you can see in person and play test.

We will be the ones dressed in our best flat caps and silly moustaches (check out the pic of us below, taken at the UK Games Expo this past June)

We are Chris, Dan and Joel and are three university friends who regularly frequent our local board games cafe. After getting into an argument (as we often do) about why a certain game we had played was so much fun to play, we started deliberating what actually makes a good board game. And from this, we decided that we'd take the plunge and design our own game. After months of testing and refining the gameplay, pulling together artwork and producing prototypes, we're finally ready to bring our project to Kickstarter!

This is our first game on Kickstarter, however across the three of us, we share product design, marketing and production expertise that has made our journey that little bit easier. We've put in a huge amount of time, money, and would love to hear what you think of it.

Thank Yous

Special thanks go out to the many, many people who have helped play test and give feedback. Our Girlfriends, Family and Friends who have been (and hopefully continue to be) very patient with us throughout the journey. Our awesome illustrators Giorgio De Michele, Tautvydas Lokys and Jason Carr who have helped us at various stages of the game and created some truly epic pieces of art. Without these wonderful people this game would be a long way off from where it is now. Thank You!

Risks and challenges

Producing a board game is a complex process that involves game designers, illustrators, manufacturing partners and fullfilment partners. We have spent over a year talking to all partners, successful KS project leaders and many potential backers to become familiar with problems they have experienced in the past with Kickstarter projects.

Here is what we have done to mitigate and pre-empt any problems that may occur:

1) We have involved our experienced manufacturing partners early on to discuss production requirements, components for the base game and stretch goal additions as well as their timeline when it comes to production.

2) The game's artwork is 90% complete and we have got an awesome team of illustrators ready to finish off the remaining parts.

3) Our fulfilment partners are extremely experienced and have handled countless Kickstarter projects who have had shipping orders going to all parts of the globe. They have been excellent at communicating with us and we are confident that they will ship the game safely to your door.

Lastly, although this is our first KS project, we have been involved and funded numerous projects over the past couple of years. We know that transparency and communication are vital. We will keep you in the loop and supply regular updates on the progress of production and fulfilment.

Thank you for your trust in us!
