Children Of Mercy is a collection of stories and essays by several exquisite members of the indie music world. Essays tackle all sorts of topics from Do It Yourself advice, the pyschology of band break ups, pro's and cons of the internet, indie music in the third world, tales of success, failure and everything in between. Basically anything you could think of as being a suitable topic is covered here better from the people who are actually doing everything independently in one way shape or form.
Some of the lucky contributors are full time musicians who live and breathe music day in and day out either through performing, promoting, or being paid to listen. But, some are not. These are people you know. They are the one's checking out your books at the library, the one with the green hair. They serve up your Chi Latte's at Starbucks. They wash your cars, or recommend music choices at your local Target. They are real everyday people. But as the day turns to night, these everyday people get the chance to be stars. Whether they are ripping it up on guitars they bought on layaway, or writing to their heart's content at a Starbucks on a laptop they bought with a high interest in store credit card. They have dreams. They have passions. They have a dire love for independent music. And they want to share it with you in this book.
This book has been designed to do two major things:
1. Open the eyes to the outside world on how tough and sometimes demeaning it is to be a soley independent musician, as well as highlight why it might just be the only true way to be a real artist in the musical world.
2. Give some advice for those currently living the independent music "dream" or those that are interested in creating music without the fear of losing their soul to the media monster know as the mainstream.
Over a dozen essays have already been submitted, and several more have been pledged. Some contributors include AnnaLynne Williams of the indie folk legends Trespassers William, Shawn Fogel of Golden Bloom, Portland Mercury journalist Ryan Feigh, and several more extremely talented individuals!
Just as a book about independent music should be, this book will be independently self published. The rights to this book will never be given up to a single publisher for fear of losing the feel of independence that is oh so important. Keeping the book independent is also very important for another reason. All proceeds and royalties that are earned from this book will go to help fight Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that has affected the son of one the contributors, Swedish musician and writer Ola Nyberg. It would almost be irresponsible for any of us to accept personal payment for this book when the goal is to do our best to possibly help out other musicians, and inform all those interested.
All the money raised here would go directly towards an Author-Directed publishing deal from an independent publisher. An Author-Directed deal is the absolute best way to recieve all the furnishings and works of an actual publisher, and still retain all rights to the book. The money here is needed in order to purchase 250 copies of the final published book. This is how the publishers make the money. The grand total to purchase this many copies could add up to around $3,000. Not that much if you really think about it, but most likely more than the folks who would buy this book would normally have on hand, including myself.
The project has gathered quite of buzz through means of social networking and blogging. Word of mouth has, and absolutely will be, one of the greatest strengths of this project. A Facebook Fan Page has been created and has gathered numerous "likes" and has been immensly praised by almost everyone who has stopped by. Here is a link:
There is also a blog that is updated upon events. Here is the link to that:
And anyone interested in updates, or more information on the project can, contact the official e-mail, firstname.lastname@example.org for further details and current going on's.
In conclusion, Children of Mercy: Tale and Teachings From The World of Independent Music should act as not only a source of entertainment for anyone interested in this ever growning scene, but as a source of inspiration and information for anyone interested in taking part in this somewhat maddening world.
