Tired of holding your tablet in bed? Sick of hunching over your laptop at your desk? We were too. That’s why we created The Right Arm – the best mobile computing stand on the market. We designed The Right Arm with three principles in mind:
- Stability - strong, sturdy, wobble-free
- Mobility - flexible and adaptable to different environments
- Universal attachment - the advanced adhesive gel is compatible with any device, retains its strength over time, and can be cleaned with water.
Before we started designing The Right Arm, we noticed that existing tablet stands and docks were predominantly desk-level products that didn’t really solve the problem of positioning a device for comfortable viewing. Most of the existing devices were about as useful as using a few books to prop up your tablet. The Right Arm offers a flexible, durable, and supportive extension apparatus so you can use your devices anywhere, anytime.
We performed extensive research on the discomforts and complications people encounter from sitting down for prolonged periods of time, and the results were pretty alarming. Yet humans are spending more time sitting than ever before – an average of 9 hours a day – and roughly 8 of those hours are spent working, staring at some sort of screen.
So, we created The Right Arm for people with desk jobs in mind. While not a cure-all, The Right Arm fosters a healthier working environment. It enables you to use tablets and laptops in virtually any position, but more importantly positions that are comfortable, ergonomically sound, and more productive, like standing up.
Most stand-up desks on the market cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars, and many of them don't give you the option to sit down at all. We don't need to stop sitting altogether, we just need to sit less and practice better posture when we do sit. The Right Arm gives you the flexibility to sit or stand for under $100.
What's that sticky stuff?
There are countless tablets and laptops of all different shapes and sizes on the market, with new products coming out each month. So, we were adamant about creating an attachment mechanism that can support any device and doesn't require a new attachment when people upgrade to a new device.
After months of research, we found a German-made, high density (1.06 g/cm3) polyurethane gel, manufactured under low pressure from two components.
The gel is naturally adhesive, plasticizer free, leaves no residue on your devices, and can be cleaned with water. The gel loses 20 percent of its adhesiveness after the first day of use but retains the remaining 80 percent throughout its life. To accommodate this, we manufactured the gel with extra adhesiveness so that even after months of use, it stays remarkably strong.
- The Right Arm utilizes an American-made, heavy-duty steel flex arm to achieve the 32.5" horizontal and vertical extension elements.
- The product is anchored by a 2” steel C-clamp base.
- Load bearing depends on extension. Completely horizontal, The Right Arm can hold 4.5 lbs. (15” Macbook Pro weighs 4.46 lbs). Vertically, The Right Arm can hold upwards of 15 lbs, depending on the position of the arm.
- The gel can be cleaned with water and retains its adhesiveness over time.
- The dimensions of the gel pad are slightly larger than an iPad – 9.5” x 7.32”.
- The color of the gel is charcoal grey.
- The cradle is molded from black ABS plastic.
- Rear elastic straps on the back of the cradle can be pulled over a device for additional support.
- The Right Arm weighs just under 4 lbs.
- The ball head allows for 360 degree rotation and can also support 4.5 lbs. The ball head has a standard camera 1/4"-20 screw thread.

Production and Fulfillment
We've been through multiple rounds of prototyping and redesign and have worked hard to make The Right Arm highly functional and extremely durable. Our manufacturing partners are waiting to be greenlighted so they can begin production. That's where we need your help, Kickstarter. Manufacturing is pricey, especially tooling, but we're working with some incredibly timely manufacturers to ensure that you're not waiting months to receive The Right Arm. If we hit our goal, we can have the first batch of products manufactured, assembled, and shipped just two weeks after our Kickstarter campaign closes.
How can we manufacture and deliver a product in two weeks? The Right Arm is comprised of mostly American-made parts (the polyurethane gel comes from Germany), and The Right Arm is assembled in America as well. Building the product domestically allows us to expedite the manufacturing, assembly, and shipping processes.
We've completed several test runs of production and assembly and estimate that we can fulfill up to 1,000 units in two weeks time. Our warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky is already prepared to receive the parts from our manufacturers, assemble The Right Arms, and box them up for shipment. With UPS headquartered in Louisville, it allows us to expedite shipment for the same standard ground rate. Aside from Hawaii, southern Oregon, and central Idaho, UPS can deliver anywhere in the country in less than four business days from Louisville. Here's the timeline we've laid out for fulfillment:
- February 4 - March 16: Kickstarter Campaign
- March 17 - 25: Production and Assembly
- March 25 - 29: Shipping
- March 29: Delivery Date
Changing the mold for custom color gel pads will take longer, so the Custom Color Reward will take longer to fulfill.
We're Bumbershoot, a team of creative, business savvy problem-solvers focused on designing products to make life easier. The founders met in Austin, Texas and The Right Arm was conceived from one of the founder's experience with back pain. We set out to enhance and extend the use of mobile computing devices across a variety of physical positions other than the traditional seated desk position. The final product is a result of research to develop a product that enhances personal productivity and reduces the discomforts caused by prolonged laptop and tablet use.
Risks and challenges
As we begin to manufacture larger batches, one of the biggest challenges will be streamlining the assembly process to make it less labor intensive and more cost effective. But we are intimately familiar with the processes it takes to manufacture The Right Arm and have fostered important relationships with our manufacturing partners.
