ABOUT THE FUTURE EMBODIED

The Future Embodied is an anthology of speculative stories exploring how science and technology might change our bodies and what it means to be human. This anthology will be available in e-book and Print On Demand format.

The Future Embodied: The Evolution of the Human Body (Approx. 60000 words)
Publication Date: December 2013
Publisher: Simian Publishing
Guest-Star Writers: Caitlin R Kiernan and William F. Nolan

Open submission anthologies offer opportunities for new and existing voices in Science Fiction to speak to a common theme. We believe that there is a market for fiction that merges concepts from hard science fiction, the social sciences, and the drama of real human experience.

This is a project of passion. Editors Jason Andrew and Mae Empson have already funded a large portion of the anthology out of their own pockets. The following aspects of the project have already been paid for before this Kickstarter.

• The brilliant cover art by Galen Dara (Check out the current cover sketch)

• Securing the work of amazing guest-star writers (Caitlin R Kiernan and William F. Nolan)

• Funds to pay writers 1 cent a word, and all printing costs.

Our goal of $1,890 requested in this kickstarter would allow us to increase our payment to 3 cents per word.  We would be delighted to be able to pay our authors more.

WHAT TYPE OF STORIES WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The editors are looking for character-driven, near-future stories of how the trajectory of current science and technology could impact our daily lives and choices. Social sciences and as-yet-untested or anecdotal discoveries are fair game. If an idea or discovery has the potential to impact human behavior and bodies, it could make a great story. We want this anthology to embody the wide range of human experience, voices, and bodies, and, in particular, to credibly consider our present and future demographics.

You are encouraged to populate your stories of the future with the kinds of bodies that have been under-represented in speculative fiction.  We are looking for stories of medical and aesthetic body modification. Consider topics like genetic engineering, prosthetics, implants, body ornamentation, surgical augmentation, and age retardation or reversal.

For more information about submissions, please see The Future Embodied submission page.

STRETCH GOALS

Our basic goal is to elevate our payment to the writers to 3 cents a word.

If we hit $3,000, we will elevate that payment to 5 cents a word.

If we hit $4890, we will open a second themed anthology for open call submission in late 2013. (The current plan is to consider a Lovecraft Mythos anthology titled Apotheosis.) The payment for this anthology would be 3 cents a word.

If we hit $6,000, we will open a second themed anthology for open call submission in late 2013. (The current plan is to consider a Lovecraft Mythos anthology titled Apotheosis.) The payment for this anthology would be 5 cents a word.

ABOUT THE REWARD TIERS

We've priced our reward tiers so that if you contribute to our Kickstarter, you're basically placing a pre-order. Almost every backer who selects one of our reward levels will get a copy of the anthology in either electronic or print format (and often both!)

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Editor Jason Andrew has previously completed two speculative anthologies for Simian Publishing: Gods and Monsters and Into the Dreamlands.

Risks and challenges

As with all kickstarters, if we do not meet our goal, we will receive none of the money pledged. In that case, the anthology will proceed as planned, and the only difference will be that we will not be able to offer our authors more than 1 cent per word.

The editors have designed a solid schedule to allow for a logical progression of the work load without causing burnout.

The submission period is March 1st 2013 to March 31st 2013.

Our goal is to have all of the stories selected by June 31st 2013.

Editing would be finished by September 2013 allowing for two months for layout and copy-editing.

We have two editors working on this project. If one of us has an accident, the other can cover until this project is completed.
