We are Tripod City and we’re super excited to be here on Kickstarter to launch our latest project, SWEET DREAMS, a publication of street photography that delves into the heart and soul of Mexico.
The book collates over 100 photographs that explore themes of love, life and death, inspired by cultural traditions such as Day of the Dead, brought to life through unexpected modern day interpretations.
The photographs combine a mix of portraiture, still life and street photography from the bustling cities of Mexico City and Guadalajara to the dusty streets of Oaxaca and Guanajuato.
Who we are
Tripod City is a UK based photographic collaboration between Charlie Kwai, Chris Lee and Paul Storrie. We document people and places from three perspectives, combining our individual styles and approaches to form one story.
Charlie gets up close and personal using his candid style to capture fleeting moments with energy and drama. Chris keeps a distance between himself and his subjects, framing people in their natural environment, like characters on a stage. Paul engages directly with people, composing portraits that give his subjects a platform to present themselves to the camera.
In 2015, we self published our first photo book, Made in China - a snapshot into the daily lives of the Chinese people.
The following year we released Gold Dust, an exploration of contemporary Ghanaian culture. The launch of the photo book coincided with a 3 month exhibition at Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes in East London.
We’re attracted to rapidly developing countries that have a strong cultural identity. Mexico stood out as the perfect candidate for our next project due to the numerous stereotypes and misconceptions commonly placed upon it. Whether positive or negative, our aim was to put those stereotypes to the test and create an honest representation of Mexico in 2017.
Sweet Dreams is our biggest and most ambitious book to date. We’ve worked with designer Bruce Usher to create a beautifully crafted object that truly encapsulates the project, without compromise.
We’re also working with printer Wonderful Books (based in the Netherlands) for their award winning image reproduction. We will be producing 350 exposed bound, hand finished books that are individually sprayed pink - a colour that features heavily in our photographs and widely considered a symbol of Mexican charisma.
Most importantly, Sweet Dreams adopts a lay-flat design which means more space and better visibility, allowing photographs to spread across two pages without being obscured by the centre-fold.
